## Özet

**The International Communication Days, organized for the 10th time this year, have commenced with the hosting and organization of Üsküdar University. Making the opening speech at the symposium, held with the main theme of ‘Digital Capitalism and Communication,’ Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated, “A culture of fear has dominated societies since the Middle Ages. In the capitalist system, technology has become the element of fear. The struggle between imperialism and anti-imperialism will continue, and its new version is digitalization.” Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, on the other hand, drew attention to where humanity positions technology by asking, “Humanity is developing technologically, we are making huge strides. But is this truly a major development, or are we missing something somewhere?” and indicated that participating academics would question this throughout the symposium. **

## **The new version of the struggle between imperialism and anti-imperialism: “Digitalization”**

## **Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan: “We spend a large part of our lives on digital platforms”**

Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Üsküdar University, began his opening speech by saying, “We spend a large part of our lives on digital platforms. We conduct our lessons on digital platforms. In fact, a part of this symposium will also be held digitally.” He stated that in the International Communication Days symposiums, held for ten years, digitalization has been examined from different perspectives and titled with themes appropriate to the period, with very important papers published every year. İrvan added that this year’s theme was determined as “Digital Capitalism and Communication,” and gave information about the general program, stating that 253 papers would be presented in 56 sessions during the three-day symposium, and the future of media would be discussed in a round table session on the last day.

## **Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “Is humanity managing technology, or falling under its management?”**

Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör started her speech by thanking experts from various universities. Stating that the symposium, organized for the 10th time this year, has gained recognition throughout Turkey, Güngör added, “Our efforts continue to make it known worldwide with our international guests.”

“We specifically emphasized digital capitalism this year,” said Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, explaining the reason by posing the following questions that would be answered during the symposium: “Humanity is developing technologically, we are making huge strides. But is this truly a major development, or are we missing something somewhere? In what sense are we integrating technology into our lives? In what part of our daily life

practices are we placing it? Can humanity manage its own creation, technology, or is it falling under the management of technology? Is it instrumentalizing technology, or is it becoming an instrument of technology?”

## **Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “We should question technology as we produce it.” **

Güngör pointed out that human intelligence is put into practice, and creativity emerges as a result of this practice, stating, “The important thing is for humanity not to objectify itself while being the subject of all these processes. Humanity is free as long as it creates. However, within the capitalist system’s implications and structure, unfortunately, as humanity creates, it is enslaved and deprived of its freedom. Therefore, we should question technology as we produce it, and stand behind every effort we put forth. Our labor and production should liberate us. If the opposite happens, it means there is a problem. We need to focus on this problem. We will question all of this throughout this symposium.”

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Digitalization is the new version of the struggle between imperialism and anti-imperialism”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar University, expressed his pleasure in realizing the 10th symposium, which continued without interruption even during the pandemic. Tarhan noted that they determine the topic each year by considering the needs of society and science, stating, “A culture of fear has dominated societies since the Middle Ages. In the capitalist system, technology has become the element of fear. With technology, liberation and competition increased, but humanity’s sense of dominance continues. Even Hitler used the technology at his disposal very well, creating magnificent works, but he used it to satisfy his own sense of dominance. He tries to establish dominance through fear, but no dictator in history has ever enjoyed what they gained. The struggle for freedom has always come to the fore in history. The struggle between imperialism and anti-imperialism will continue, and its new version is digitalization. Technology itself is neutral. It is up to us to use technology and artificial intelligence for good or bad. Young people are natives of the digital world; we are immigrants, refugees. Therefore, a lot of work falls to them.”

## **One ages when they stop learning**

Emphasizing that technology is neutral and will serve for good or ill depending on its purpose of use, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated, “In 2018, the topic ‘Is artificial intelligence the new god?’ was discussed in Davos. Issues such as ‘Are we heading towards digital dictatorship? Are we the last free generation?’ came to the agenda. This means that the new version of the master-slave mentality is using digitalization. When using technology, will we be the object or the subject of technology? If we can use artificial intelligence, if we can produce new technologies, we can be the subject, not the object. We had put artificial intelligence on our agenda since 2013 in our traditionally organized Science Idea Festival, moving it to the titles of our competition.” He added: “The World Health Organization has such a definition for aging; when a person stops learning, starts not leaving their comfort zone, doesn’t question themselves, doesn’t use their sense of curiosity and wonder, that person has begun to age. Therefore, learning should continue throughout life.”

The symposium, which will last 3 days and feature 253 papers presented in 56 sessions with the participation of important international figures, includes names such as Prof. Dr. Gillian Doyle from Glasgow University, Senior Researcher Dr. Paško Bilić from the Department of Culture and Communication at the Institute for Development and International Relations in Zagreb, Communication and Information Historian Prof. Dr. Dan Schiller from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Prof. Dr. Halil Nalçaoğlu from Istanbul Bilgi University, Prof. Dr. Gamze Yücesan Özdemir from Ankara University, and Prof. Dr. Victor Pickard from the Annenberg School for Communication.
