Tarhan emphasized the importance of Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's Ilm al-Kalam approach for young people during the talk. While addressing the necessity of presenting truths in the language and style of this era, Tarhan also drew attention to the fact that sincerity and devotion (ihlas) are in cooperation with success and destiny. Tarhan explained Bediüzzaman's understanding of positive action and the necessity of living religion away from politics, commerce, and worldliness with examples.** ## İçerik ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-1-260402100634.png) The talk held in the RİNAP hall of Üsküdar University South Campus drew intense interest. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-2-260402100732.png) ## **“Ilm al-Kalam needs to be brought down to high school level”** Giving examples from Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's approaches, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said: “Victor Hugo has a saying, 'There is no weapon more powerful than an idea whose time has come.' We currently see that the time has come for the theses of Risale-i Nur. The integration of religion and science, the turning of young people towards movements like Deism and Atheism… The Islamic world had not been sufficiently successful in bringing Ilm al-Kalam down to the youth level. However, it needs to be brought down to high school level. Bediüzzaman Said Nursî achieved this. He adapted Ilm al-Kalam, existence, monotheism (tawhid), and the existence of Allah to the conditions of this era with a method that explains them through reasoning. We see that this need is better understood today. My observation is also in this direction. Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's method also includes an understanding of positive action. That is, instead of dealing with others' faults, uniting on common grounds and acting together. He says, 'There can be no unity externally without unity internally.' Today, humanity has realized that it cannot produce solutions by overly politicizing issues. In contrast, Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's approach emphasizes that religion should not be politicized, commercialized, or even worldly; it should be lived solely for the pleasure of Allah. We see that this understanding has become a broader common ground today,” he began. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-3-260402100845.png) ## **“Humanity is thirsty for truths”** Tarhan stated that the thoughts expressed by Bediüzzaman Said Nursî remain current; “If there is a need, a desire for that need awakens. When a desire awakens, motivation and action emerge. In other words, everything begins with the recognition of a need. For example, if you want to make a horse drink water, instead of forcing it, you give it salt, and it goes and drinks water by itself. Now humanity is also thirsty for these truths. Because it is thirsty, it feels a need, and when it feels a need, it starts searching. When searching, the internet provides great convenience today. When asked about Risale-i Nur to artificial intelligence tools or other language models, we see that it frequently stands out among solutions related to these topics. When asked how religion should be explained in the future of humanity, it is clearly seen that digitalization provides a significant advantage in accessing correct information. The thoughts expressed by Bediüzzaman Said Nursî about 100 years ago in Münazarat and Hutbe-i Şamiye remain as current today as if they were spoken for this very time." ## **“Truths should be presented in the attire of this era”** Tarhan, explaining the important features of Risale-i Nur; “What would Imam Ghazali do if he were alive today? Most likely, he would follow a similar method to what Bediüzzaman Said Nursî did today. That is, he would re-examine Ilm al-Kalam in a way appropriate to the understanding and methods of this era. Bediüzzaman Said Nursî, thinking like Socrates, preferred to explain in the simplest way, in a style that everyone could understand. So much so that even a person with little education can benefit from these explanations. This is also one of the most important features of Risale-i Nur. It contains sections appealing to different levels. For example, while the First Word and Second Word appeal to a more general reader, sections like the Thirtieth Word offer a more profound explanation. In this respect, Bediüzzaman Said Nursî succeeded in spreading Ilm al-Kalam to wide masses. Therefore, it would not be sufficient to continue this by merely writing commentaries on Imam Ghazali's works. It needs to be re-produced according to the conditions of this era. If Imam Ghazali were alive today, he would probably choose this method too. Because the most suitable method is the one appropriate to the conditions of the time. That is, one must take truths and present them in the language and attire of this era. We do not need to go back to the past; we need to bring those truths to the present." he concluded. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/screenshot-4-260402100951.png) ## **“When one sets out sincerely, destiny also provides support”** Tarhan, speaking about the concept of sincere devotion (ihlas); “When you make an issue your ultimate ideal, Allah provides inspiration from somewhere, and something emerges. Sincerity is very important here. Bediüzzaman Said Nursî refers to it as sincere devotion (ihlas). Devotion (ihlas) alone is not enough; it needs to be combined with sincerity. Ihlas is making the divine pleasure one's ultimate goal. When sincerity is added, Allah's help comes. Where there is sincerity, it feels as if an invisible hand is helping. It is possible to see reflections of this in many events. When one sets out sincerely, destiny also provides support. However, this is not something that happens effortlessly. It certainly requires effort and exertion. Therefore, being on that path, progressing steadily, and acting in an organized manner in this direction are of great importance," he said. ## **Suffering can be managed when the right meaning is attributed…** Tarhan, stating that suffering needs to be given the right meaning to avoid falling into despair; “In psychiatry, there is an approach called meaning therapy. When a person attributes the right meaning to the suffering they experience, they can manage that suffering better. When the right meaning is attributed, a person does not fall into despair. However, a strong faith is also needed to sustain this. Someone who thinks only worldly might say, 'I'm going to die anyway, so why should I suffer so much?' but a person with belief in the afterlife, who contemplates meeting Allah, can endure this process with patience and gratitude. At this point, Bediüzzaman Said Nursî's approach also draws attention. A person acts by saying, 'Let me do my duty.' Indeed, as Yavuz Sultan Selim stated during the Battle of Çaldıran, 'The expedition is ours, victory is from Allah.'
