## Özet

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there are lessons to be learned from the pandemic period, emphasizing that this period should be turned into an opportunity, saying, “The pandemic period teaches us many things. It is an opportunity to get to know ourselves better. It is an opportunity to develop our ability to remain calm under stress and in the face of difficulties. It is an opportunity to learn stress management.”**

** ****Prof. Dr. Levent Akın, a member of the Ministry of Health Coronavirus Science Committee, a faculty member of Hacettepe University Public Health Department, and Deputy Director of the Vaccine Institute, who gave the first lecture of the new academic year, also stated that pandemics can only be ended with vaccines. Prof. Dr. Levent Akın noted that more than 180 vaccine studies are ongoing worldwide and 12 in our country, adding that the studies for the inactive virus vaccine in our country are nearing completion and they expect it to be administered in December. Akın, who estimated that 1 million doses would arrive in Turkey in December, also stated that the inactive virus vaccine does not alter genetic structure.**

[Üsküdar Üniversitesi ](https://uskudar.edu.tr)2020-2021 Academic Year Fi-jital Opening Ceremony was held online within the framework of pandemic measures. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector [Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan](https://www.nevzattarhan.com), in his opening speech, stated that the 2020 – 2021 Academic Year opening ceremony was held in the shadow of the pandemic, adding that the pandemic seriously affected everyone.

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We experienced very significant growth in 9 years”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that Üsküdar Üniversitesi has 22 thousand students, has experienced serious and rapid growth as a foundation university in 9 years, and has expanded its infrastructure, reminding that universities have four pillars.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the first pillar is education, understood when speaking of a university, and the second pillar is R&D studies, stating, “We have recently implemented a new structure related to R&D. We established a separate unit for R&D policies. In the graph newly announced by TÜBİTAK regarding the competence volumes and qualities of universities, we ranked first in the fields of neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychology. In other areas, TÜBİTAK's statistics pleased us in terms of publication quality, projects undertaken, and other academic activities. Of course, it is necessary to continue; sustainability is important. The third pillar of a university is converting knowledge into products. It is the ability to commercialize the knowledge it produces and to cooperate with industry. If a university cannot do this, it becomes a university that only produces knowledge but is not beneficial to society. It must contribute to the future of science.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We are implementing social projects”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that another duty of universities is to inform society, stating, “We are carrying out social projects related to this. TÜBİTAK has allocated more budget for social projects. We have various studies in this area. We have projects related to education in a university environment for high school students and families, such as 'Families at University' and 'Youth at University'. We signed a protocol with the Istanbul Governorship for the 'Families at University' project. In the project starting on November 24th, we will reach many families.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We implemented the 'Fi-jital University' concept”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that as Üsküdar Üniversitesi, they managed to adapt to the pandemic period affecting every aspect of life, explaining that they implemented the 'fi-jital university' concept: “During the summer, we held our vision meeting. We evaluated what we would do next year while the pandemic continued in this way. We couldn't hold the graduation ceremony, and we anticipated an increase in the pandemic during the Academic Year Opening Ceremony, which indeed happened. Following this, in the meeting, we decided to implement the 'Fi-jital' University concept, aiming to combine face-to-face and digital education. We are in the field of health, and practical application is important in this field. It was necessary not to disconnect from practical application. To avoid this, we started education in this way without disrupting the academic calendar, by having students who could come attend face-to-face in a diluted manner, and students who couldn't come attend remotely in a live classroom environment. We were able to progress until this week, but this week the pandemic took off. Since it took off, we are re-evaluating. We have a plan to give more weight to digital education in a live classroom format, except for some compulsory ones.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Distance learning is possible, but not distance education”**

Tarhan noted that Üsküdar Üniversitesi academics made great sacrifices during this process, stating, “Their contributions in student counseling and classroom management were very beneficial in helping us get through the difficulties of the pandemic without incident. It is also beneficial to re-read our Fi-jital manifesto. In it, we said, 'Distance learning is possible, but not distance education.' We emphasized this. Education is a master-apprentice job. There is a master-apprentice relationship between the instructor and the student. We don't just teach science; we also teach art. In art, too, the master-apprentice relationship is important. For this relationship to exist, there is a necessity for face-to-face interaction. We will compensate when it is not possible. To ensure our students receive the best education, we aim for the student's highest benefit. When making decisions in education policies, the student's highest benefit is a strategic criterion for us in many matters. We act accordingly. We also attached importance to this during the pandemic period, and we hope these difficult days will pass.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The psychological dimension of the pandemic should not be neglected”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the psychological dimension of the pandemic process must be addressed, stating, “We will hear our esteemed Levent's views on the pandemic's second wave worldwide, but I also read that the psychological dimension of the issue is important, and even the World Health Organization made a statement talking about a pandemic of psychiatric illnesses. This is another serious aspect of the matter. Therefore, our stance against the pandemic is important. I had read a report prepared by China with a university after the pandemic. In that report, it said, 'We solved the pandemic not with social isolation but with social cooperation.' A pandemic solved through social cooperation requires healthcare professionals, pandemic epidemiologists, public health specialists, and infectious disease specialists to manage it well, provided that the rules can be followed.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan offered advice to young people**

Tarhan, who also offered advice to young people, said, “Humans cannot choose some things at birth. They cannot choose their parents, their gender, their ethnic geography, or their ethnicity. But they also cannot choose coronavirus. None of us can choose the Covid pandemic. We can choose some things. What can a young person choose? You cannot choose to be wealthy, but you can choose to work hard. There are certain things in life. We can choose all these human qualities such as being ethical, just, good, honest, and hardworking. If we consider what benefit choosing these will bring us, I can say that it always brings benefits in the medium and long term. There is a rule I always try to emphasize: Is it more profitable to be virtuous or to be self-serving? People who think with capitalist logic and that morality always say that being self-serving is profitable. It may seem so in the short term, but in the medium and long term, those who were virtuous have won in history, like the example of Gandhi. This therefore young people the right to choose. Youth is a period dominated by feelings rather than reason and logic, where only short-term thinking prevails. If a young person acting on their feelings is drawn into tendencies that amplify those feelings, they will continue to make mistakes. Therefore, we must also engage their thinking brain. It is also our responsibility to engage the thinking brain of a young person who only acts with their feeling brain.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “No bravado regarding Covid”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, likening the relationship with the pandemic to the relationship with a storm, said, “No one wants rain and storms. Branches break, floods occur, many difficulties are experienced. If we establish our relationship with the storm correctly, that is, if we build our house strong, take our precautions, and create a safe environment, then when a storm occurs, we will have taken our precautions and will not give up on our lives, we will not be left homeless. The same applies to Covid. I particularly tell young people: No bravado regarding Covid. Just as there is no bravado against a storm, this also applies to Covid. Taking precautions is absolutely crucial. The rules of hygiene, distance, and mask, as stated by science, are important. The physician from Amasya, Şerafettin Sabuncuoğlu, says, 'When there is an epidemic, eat well, sleep well, greet from a distance.' He said the same thing as what we now call social distance, or even physical distance. Avicenna also told his assistant, who said everyone was fleeing during an epidemic and they should too, that they were healthcare professionals and could not flee. Saying 'it is our duty to fix this,' he remained in the field, washed his hands with vinegar, and saw patients. Since then, for 500-600 years, we haven't produced another Avicenna, which is a separate issue. This is also an example from which we should learn. The basic rules confirmed by science do not change. I want to tell this to young people.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The pandemic is an opportunity to learn stress management”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that there are lessons to be learned from the pandemic period, stating, “My final advice to young friends is this: The pandemic period teaches us many things. It is an opportunity to get to know ourselves better. It is an opportunity to develop our ability to remain calm under stress and in the face of difficulties. It is an opportunity to learn stress management. Instead of complaining why this pandemic happened, why I can't have fun or travel as I wish, it is important for us to manage this crisis. The crisis has two legs. One is the threat leg, and the other is the opportunity leg. If we can manage the opportunity leg, it will be a particular gain for young people. It can enable us to achieve some things during a difficult period of life.”

## **First Lecture from Prof. Dr. Levent Akın: “A Perspective on the Covid Pandemic”**

The first lecture of the new academic year, titled "A Perspective on the Covid-19 Pandemic," was given by Prof. Dr. Levent Akın, a member of the Ministry of Health Coronavirus Science Committee, a faculty member of Hacettepe University Public Health Department, and Deputy Director of the Vaccine Institute. The moderation of the first lecture was conducted by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur.

## **Prof. Dr. Levent Akın: “The only way to end pandemics is vaccination”**

Prof. Dr. Levent Akın, providing information about the studies conducted since the pandemic's appearance worldwide and in our country, also made evaluations regarding vaccine studies. Prof. Dr. Levent Akın noted that there are more than 180 vaccine studies worldwide and 12 in our country, stating, “Much hope has been placed on vaccines. Vaccination is the sole way to prevent infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics worldwide. We can fix some things with precautions, but despite this, we need vaccines to eradicate this disease and reduce its threat level.”

## **Prof. Dr. Levent Akın: “Studies on the inactive virus vaccine are nearing completion”**

Prof. Dr. Levent Akın stated the following: “There are various studies worldwide. As Hacettepe University Vaccine Institute, we are working on a recombinant vaccine. One of the most commonly used vaccines is the inactive virus vaccine. This is a Chinese-origin vaccine. Studies in Turkey are nearing completion. We anticipate that a significant amount of vaccine will be procured from China in this regard, and it will likely be administered in December. One of the prominent topics is RNA vaccines. We are particularly proud of Prof. Dr. Uğur Şahin, who is of Turkish origin and the director of BioNTech in Germany, continuing his work in Turkey; the reason for this work being in Turkey is that Mr. Uğur ensured its presence in Turkey.”

## **Prof. Dr. Levent Akın: “We estimate 1 million vaccine doses will arrive in December”**

Prof. Dr. Levent Akın said, “For BioNTech's vaccine to be commercially distributed, permission must be obtained from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which we refer to as the European Union Board of Medicines and Medical Devices. It needs to get a license. It has received reports for Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies related to this. It is waiting for the positive report from the Phase 3 study and the completion of the license. Therefore, the expectation is that the mRNA vaccine could arrive in Turkey in December. Because Turkey has a significant agreement. But the whole world, the US, wants 300 million doses of this vaccine. I estimate that Turkey will receive a sufficient amount in this regard. There are some discussions, I don't know how accurate it is to give a number, but we can estimate that 1 million doses will arrive in December. It could also be less than this number. Because vaccine production is somewhat like tailoring; there could be a snag in production.”

## **Prof. Dr. Levent Akın: “mRNA vaccine does not alter genetic structure”**

Prof. Dr. Levent Akın noted that there are various studies on mRNA vaccines worldwide, and baseless claims are sometimes made, stating, “Currently, three vaccine studies are being tested on humans. Work on two of them is nearing completion. Some say that 'the mRNA vaccine, which is produced in Germany and which we expect to be implemented in Turkey soon, enters the genetic structure and disrupts it.' mRNAs are not permanent genetic material. They appear when needed, and after producing the necessary protein, they lose themselves. This is a characteristic known by all our colleagues who are closely familiar with cell sciences. Roughly speaking, you administer the RNA vaccine. The mRNA produces that protein for you against the protein that the virus attaches to human cells. The body produces antibodies against that protein. By producing antibodies, it prepares the immune system for it. Therefore, when you encounter the actual virus, it eliminates the disease. Its success rate is at 90%. Let me clearly underline this: It is not possible for mRNA vaccines to cause any changes in genetic structure.”

Prof. Dr. Levent Akın also touched upon the studies on the transmission routes of Covid-19, pointing out that the risk of transmission is highest among family members, friends, and acquaintances within the family, and that traveling and public transportation vehicles also carry significant risks.
