Founding Rector**[** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan**](https://www.nevzattarhan.com)**, stating that the future lies in connectivity, pointed out that for different people to look at the same goal with a similar mode of action and to form a common mind is only possible through a shared perspective and cooperation. Üsküdar Üniversitesi, a pioneer of development and innovation, held its 3rd Vision Meeting with the main theme "Focused on R&D and Innovative Policies" following its "Digitalization Focused" vision meeting. The meeting, held outdoors in the Çarşı Campus garden with pandemic measures observed, was moderated by Tolga Yücel, who provides consultancy to brands within Yücel Communication and Management Consultancy. The search meeting was attended by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zelka, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Furkan Tarhan, along with vice rectors, rector advisors, deans, research center directors, and numerous academic and administrative staff. The opening speech of the meeting, held with the code Innovation for the Future #2609, was delivered by Halime Usta Yoğun, Director of R&D and Innovation Policies (ARGEYEP). ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2020/09/26/800/img-9040.JPG) ## **Halime Usta Yoğun: “The World Has Shifted to an Interdisciplinary R&D Structure”** Halime Usta Yoğun, emphasizing that the world is experiencing a very different change and has moved to an interdisciplinary R&D structure, highlighted the importance of collaboration. Yoğun made the following remarks: “Different departments come together to create very different products and technologies. The issue we always bring up in these matters is collaboration… It is very important for the ecosystem and for you, our academics, administrative staff, and students, to progress together. Many parameters are important, not just one, in the world and in Turkey. The most crucial of these parameters is creating the groundwork, infrastructure, and the necessary climate. Today, we have divided into five groups here. We will discuss five main topics regarding R&D and innovation infrastructure and how to create this climate.” ## **Yoğun: “We aim for groundbreaking work…”** Emphasizing the necessity of a regular communication and information infrastructure once the ecosystem is established with internal and external stakeholders, and that this should be made sustainable, Yoğun stated, “Records regarding the Technology Transfer Offices of every university in Turkey are being kept under TÜBİTAK. Their activities, the outputs they produce... This year, in 2020-2021, we aim to establish a technology transfer center infrastructure that is traceable, trackable, and exemplary according to national and international norms, and to carry out groundbreaking work at Üsküdar Üniversitesi. As a university, our goal with these efforts is to establish a system at Üsküdar Üniversitesi that can lead in many areas of R&D and innovation, leave a footprint, and be followed by other universities. Our objective is to increase Üsküdar Üniversitesi's R&D outputs.” ![Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2020/09/26/800/img-9060.JPG) ## **Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk: “We will now behave more flexibly”** Following the opening speeches, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk took the stage. Konuk, who made evaluations under the title ‘Strategic Positioning of the Directorate’, stated that it is now time for vertical growth. Konuk, who even said they were late, continued; “We have made an effort to carry out these works professionally, actively, and as a core group. We have developed the department, which includes the TTO, into a directorate under the name ARGEYEP. Along with this, our digital transformation and strategy development coordination office has been established. Therefore, from now on, we need to act more flexibly and essentially carry out work related to R&D topics with everyone pitching in.” ![Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2020/09/26/800/img-9226.JPG) In the program, where Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Advisor Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan also gave a welcoming speech, Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan finally took the floor in the context of the meeting's purpose and vision. ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The Future is in Connectivity”** Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that R&D and innovative policies are a topic they have always emphasized, pointing out that a leap needs to be made by achieving a different perspective. Tarhan, using the expressions "We have done what we could for years and reached a certain infrastructure," continued, “At the point of this leap, we have created both an academic infrastructure and a staff who know how to do it. Our esteemed Halime's significant experience in this area will also contribute to us**. **Here, we need to form a common mind. Different people must look at the same goal with a similar mode of action. There will be different temperaments, different disciplines, people with different backgrounds, and a common goal with similar actions. Common sense is formed through a common perspective and cooperation. For this, we need to overcome the obstacles in our minds. Scientific transformation does not occur without mental transformation. When we talk about R&D, we have a template in our minds. However, this template often does not reflect reality and is constantly changing. We need to be able to see and recognize this change. This can only happen through common sense and common deliberation. The best method for this is these meetings. It is important that we can discuss everything here. The more you contribute, the more important it is for us. The future is now in connectivity.” ## **![Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2020/09/26/800/img-9081.JPG)** ## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “One Needs to Dream with Purpose”** In his speech, Tarhan emphasized the stages of creative idea generation and made the following evaluations: “First, dreaming. But dreaming is not enough; one must dream with purpose. That is, there must be mental effort, mental objection, mental rebellion. Then comes the incubation period... During the incubation period, ideas come to us from unexpected places. But this requires serious mental power. Every faculty member from every discipline should think about 'how can I make my work better' in their own field. There is a rule in innovation. If your work takes ten hours, you should spend an hour and a half thinking about what you thought. Brilliant ideas can also emerge in these meetings. Ideas are born after incubation. To achieve this, meetings where we can make associations and put forward ideas are very important. Therefore, everyone should write down whatever comes to mind, even if it seems absurd. This meeting will be one where there is no sense of shame in a scientific context. We will even voice every absurd thought here. A thought you call absurd might be an association for the formation of a new idea elsewhere.” ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2020/09/26/800/img-9027.JPG) In the search meetings where the main topic 'What kind of future awaits us in the innovative and R&D ecosystem?' was discussed under the subheadings of people, students, academics, professionals, universities, and corporate structures, 5 different groups presented their findings and recommendations, questioning their current status in their respective fields of activity and what actions should be taken. In the meeting where corporate goals, strategies, and implementations were discussed, observations and discussions on the general business plan were made within the framework of general participation. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan delivered the closing speech of the highly productive meeting.
