## Özet

Experts state that growth accelerates during adolescence, and the body's need for energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals also increases during this period.

## İçerik

Drawing attention to the frequent occurrence of vitamin D, iron, B12, and folic acid deficiencies during adolescence, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “During this period, adolescents’ calorie requirements and protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements increase.” İspiroğlu noted that iron deficiency can lead to fatigue, weakness, and learning difficulties, and emphasized that vitamin D is important for bone development, while B12 and folic acid deficiencies can affect cognitive functions and mood.

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu, Nutrition and Diet Specialist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made statements about the increased need for energy, vitamins, and minerals due to accelerated growth during adolescence, and the importance of a balanced diet.

**As growth accelerates in adolescence, the need for energy and nutrients increases!**

Stating that adolescence is the period when growth occurs fastest after infancy, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “During this period, adolescents’ calorie requirements and protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements increase.”

Therefore, İspiroğlu stated that adequate and balanced nutrition becomes even more important, adding, “Among the health problems frequently seen in adolescence due to nutrition are; obesity, underweight, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Especially in adolescents, vitamin D, iron, B12, and folic acid deficiencies are common.”

**Vitamin D is of great importance for bone development during adolescence! **

Reminding that accelerated growth and increased bone mineral density occur especially during adolescence, İspiroğlu said, “Therefore, adequate intake of vitamin D becomes even more important.”

Referring to the consequences of insufficient vitamin D intake, İspiroğlu stated, “In addition to osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and bone fractures, health problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome and atopic dermatitis can also be observed. Rich sources of vitamin D include fatty fish and eggs, but the key point here is to benefit sufficiently from sunlight.”

**Iron deficiency can lead to fatigue, weakness, and learning difficulties! **

Stating that iron is an important mineral involved in the functioning of many organs and cell renewal, İspiroğlu said, “In case of deficiency, fatigue, weakness, decreased appetite, and learning difficulties can be observed. Rich sources include red meat, eggs, and legumes. The absorbability of iron in molasses, which is known as a rich source of iron in society, is lower than that from animal-derived foods.”

**B12 and folic acid deficiency can affect cognitive functions and mood! **

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu pointed out that vitamin B12 and folic acid are involved in DNA synthesis and cell growth, stating, “When not taken in sufficient amounts by the body, deficiencies are especially observed in rapidly growing tissues with fast cell renewal.”

Furthermore, emphasizing that the deficiency of these vitamins in the body can lead to a decrease in cognitive functions and mood disorders, İspiroğlu concluded her words as follows:

“Therefore, red and white meats, animal proteins such as fish, eggs, cheese, dark green leafy vegetables, and legumes, which are rich sources of vitamin B12 and folic acid, should be included in the diet.

It is also very important to meet the nutrient needs of physically active, athlete adolescents. Especially for athlete adolescents, meeting fluid needs, replacing vitamins and minerals lost through sweat, and meeting daily energy needs by consuming as natural a diet as possible are essential for mental and physical development during this period.”
