## Özet
Experts state that New Year's Eve dinners are one of the special periods when routine eating habits change, and it is possible to balance this process with healthy choices.
## İçerik
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit stated that a healthy New Year can be achieved not with strict restrictions, but with balanced preparation throughout the day and a flexible yet controlled evening. She said, 'For the main course, lighter and easily digestible white meats such as fish, chicken, or turkey can be preferred instead of red meat. The table can include at least three healthy options such as a salad rich in greens, walnuts, and pomegranates, and vegetable mezzes prepared with yogurt.' Yiğit pointed out that sugary and fermented drinks can create an additional burden on the digestive system and liver, emphasizing the importance of portion control and timing in dessert consumption.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit provided information on the key points of healthy eating during the New Year.
**A Healthy New Year is Possible with a Balanced and Flexible Approach!**
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit stated that New Year's Eve is one of the special periods when social interaction increases, meal times extend, and routine eating habits temporarily change. She said, 'Although strict restrictions often come to mind when we say 'let's have a healthy New Year', a healthy New Year actually means making balanced preparations throughout the day, spending the evening with a planned but flexible approach, and supporting the next day with restorative habits instead of punishing the body.'
Yiğit reminded that New Year's Eve tables become rich with main courses, mezzes, snacks, and desserts all together. She stated, 'What is important here is not to evaluate nutrition with an 'all or nothing' approach. A balanced New Year's table makes both enjoyment and control possible at the same time.'
**Lighter White Meats Should Be Preferred Instead of Red Meat for the Main Course! **
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit recommended choosing lighter and easily digestible white meats such as fish, chicken, or turkey instead of red meat for the main course. She said, 'Such choices are a more suitable approach for New Year's Eve.'
Yiğit also offered suggestions for alternative foods that can accompany the main course, stating:
'Including at least three healthy options on the table, such as a salad rich in greens, walnuts, and pomegranates, and vegetable mezzes prepared with yogurt, increases fiber and antioxidant intake, supporting satiety and blood sugar balance. For snacks, raw and unsalted nuts or homemade popcorn prepared with little oil offer more balanced alternatives instead of chips and packaged products. Regarding dessert consumption, instead of immediately reaching for dessert after the main meal, first support satiety with fiber-rich salads and vegetables; then, after a short break, consuming desserts in small portions helps maintain blood sugar balance. This approach ensures a more controlled insulin response, reducing sudden fluctuations and the risk of excess energy being stored as fat.'
**Fermented and Sugary Drinks Can Strain Digestion and Liver on New Year's Eve! **
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit warned that fermented beverages and high-sugar drink mixes on New Year's Eve can create an additional burden on the digestive system and liver. She stated, 'Therefore, plain drinks, mineral water, flavored water, and herbal teas should be preferred; fermented drinks should not be consumed on an empty stomach. Especially for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance, or stomach sensitivity, eating balanced throughout the day and not sitting down at the table overly hungry is important for hypoglycemia prevention and portion control.'
**The First Day of the New Year: An Opportunity to Listen to Your Body and Soul!**
Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Hülya Yiğit said, 'The first day of the new year offers a good opportunity to start the day by listening to your body and soul.' She reminded, 'Starting the day by drinking water, having a light breakfast, and preferring vegetable-heavy meals throughout the day supports the digestive system.'
Yiğit emphasized that foods like green leafy vegetables, broccoli, artichoke, lemon, ginger, and turmeric can be included in meals to support the liver's natural detoxification processes. She concluded by saying, 'While fermented products like yogurt and kefir support the intestinal flora, starting the new year with a light-paced walk or a short home exercise will benefit both body and mind. Wishing you a happy new year, starting with habits that are good for your soul and body.'
