## Özet
World-renowned singer Celine Dion, known for her rendition of the Titanic film's theme song, announced that she has been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome. Following Celine Dion's announcement, Stiff Person Syndrome, also known as Rigid Person Syndrome, became a subject of curiosity.
## İçerik
Stating that Stiff Person Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by muscle stiffness and painful muscle spasms, usually pronounced in the spine and legs, Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini said, “Although the exact cause is not fully known, there is strong evidence that it is an autoimmune disease.”
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini provided information about Stiff Person Syndrome, which world-renowned singer Celine Dion also suffers from.
The exact cause is not fully known
Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) or Rigid Person Syndrome is a rare and often progressive neurological disorder, adding, “This syndrome is characterized by muscle stiffness and painful muscle spasms, usually pronounced in the spine and legs. SPS can severely affect mobility and daily life activities.”
Emphasizing that although the exact cause of SPS is not fully known, there is strong evidence that it is an autoimmune disease, Dr. Celal Şalçini continued as follows:
“An autoimmune disease means that the body's immune system attacks its own nerve cells. Specifically, the presence of antibodies against an enzyme called GAD (glutamic acid decarboxylase) plays an important role in the diagnosis of SPS. GAD antibodies target this enzyme, which is found in nerve cells and plays a role in the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter that regulates muscle movements, and its deficiency leads to muscle stiffness and spasms.”
Diagnosis can be complex
Stating that the symptoms of SPS usually develop gradually, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, “Symptoms may initially be mild. However, over time, muscle stiffness and spasms increase. These symptoms can worsen with triggers such as stress, sudden noises, or touch. Patients may experience muscle spasms that make movement difficult and can be painful. Additionally, balance problems and the risk of falls are common.
The diagnosis of SPS is made based on clinical symptoms, as well as tests such as blood tests and electromyography (EMG). The presence of GAD antibodies is a strong indicator in the diagnosis of SPS. However, these antibodies may not always be found in patients with SPS, so diagnosis can be complex and requires careful evaluation by a neurology specialist.”
It can cause emotional as well as physical difficulties
“Treatment focuses on managing symptoms because there is no definitive cure for SPS,” said Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini, concluding his remarks as follows:
“Medications include muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants (epilepsy medications), and immunomodulators. These medications can help reduce muscle stiffness and spasms. Additionally, physical therapy and rehabilitation play an important role in increasing muscle strength and mobility.
Living with SPS can involve both physical and emotional challenges. Therefore, it is also important for patients to receive psychological support. Support groups and counseling services can help patients cope with the disease and improve their quality of life.
Since Stiff Person Syndrome is a rare disease, it is important to raise public awareness. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help patients manage their symptoms and have a better quality of life. Therefore, it is vital for individuals experiencing symptoms to consult a healthcare professional and undergo the necessary evaluations.”
