## ***- First of all, thank you very much for accepting our interview. Could we briefly get to know you first?***

Hello, I am Zehra Güneş. I am 24 years old, a Cancer, a cinema lover, a workaholic, a dreamer, a woman who pursues her goals with various strategies. You will understand what I mean by the end of our conversation.

## ***- You describe yourself as a cinema lover and a workaholic. How long have you felt this way?***

I've been a workaholic since I worked half a day for 5 TL and a full day for 10 TL at a yufka shop when I was 12-14 years old; and I've been a cinema lover since 2014, after my friend Zeyna reached me on my mother's phone and said, “Zehra, would you like to be an actress?”, and I worked tirelessly as an extra for 12-16 hours. Of course, back then I was also trying to convince everyone (at home) and so on…

## ***- What does work truly mean to you?***

Because I love my job, whether I go on vacation or hang out with friends, cinema and work are always my main themes. It might seem boring from the outside, but it doesn't feel that way to me; perhaps it's because I love it and I'm used to it, I don't know. Every unit, every particle of my work is filled with effort. I always say, and I'll say it again, those who work in the cinema and film industry truly earn every penny they make. It's like pieces of a puzzle. Teamwork and a lot of effort. Producing a successful “thing” as a result means the disappearance of 12 hours of fatigue in that moment. I experienced this very deeply while filming “Mevlana’s Life.” We shot a series in the most difficult conditions of my life, in -27 degrees cold. During a meal break, we watched what we had shot as a teaser, as a team. Neither cold, nor fatigue, nor anger, nor stress… I could have worked for another 10 hours. Psychotic, right? Maybe, yes, a little. You're right, psychotic! I can't help but say this. When people finish a project they're incredibly tired from, they want to go on vacation. Normal people, that is. But my vacation record is 2 days. After that, whoop, depression. Snap, get a job, pull yourself together.

## ***- Life is not always about winning; it's often built on losing… What is your motivation in such situations?***

Oh, dear… This is a deeply affecting question. Because I've lost much more than I've won. In terms of work, that is, let there be no misunderstanding… Anyway. Since I am a Cancer, I often, even always, approach situations emotionally. Because I approach them this way, I have a lot of emotional ups and downs. Because the only problem here isn't just that an audition you filmed wasn't approved. The real problem is feeling compelled to constantly explain yourself to your family and social circle. You convinced yourself of a hope. It's not enough. Beyond your social circle, you also need to convince your family. I shoot at least 5 audition films with my lighted tripod at least 4 times a week. Constantly shooting, memorizing, adjusting the light, the environment; the house is already crowded. You start becoming the butt of jokes at home. This is a very uncomfortable situation. You know you'll find the right character at the right time, but your enthusiasm is constantly dampened for one reason or another. I've strayed too far from the question, apologies… My motivation is exactly like this: when I'm down, I let myself go on the first day. I get sad, if I'm too full, I cry. Then I look around at my acquaintances who entered the industry at the same time as me but are truly terrible actors. Then I ask myself how I can't showcase myself if they can. I do more test shots and try to control my facial expressions on camera. I send out my performances, constantly create channels for myself to receive news. I increase my chances of approval. Even when I lose, I produce.

## ***- People have turning points in their lives; have you had such a point or points?***

Yes, many times. Generally, my turning points occur as a result of an argument. It stems from my authoritative stance against injustice. Let me tell you about the most impactful one, an event that propelled me forward in my acting career. I was working as a team leader on a series – no need to mention its name – when I was 16-17 years old. The assistant director on set told the background actors I had directed to the set, “You are sheep.” He repeated, “Stand like sheep on stage,” 3-5 times. And I had to do something, but I was a child and I was afraid. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore, and the word “Excuse me” came out of my mouth. I had to follow through. He walked up to me in the middle of the set. He also called me a sheep. I reacted rather strongly to him, but he deserved it. Then I left the set crying. On my way out, a casting director saw me, and that day I shot my first professional audition. Oh, and I also saw people giving up their honor for 40 TL that day. The friends I stood up for didn't come with me. Anyway, I'd do it again if given the chance.

## ***- You state that you want to be both a good actor and a good screenwriter. Can both be possible at once? ***

There are many successful examples of this. The director is also a screenwriter and an actor. Nothing is impossible, nothing at all. The universe just needs to be convinced that you're striving and believing!

## ***- You say, “Even if I become a great actor, writer, and director, I still have a long way to go and see.” You believe in the importance of education. What training have you received, and what are your goals in this context?***

I am devoted to practical training given in the “kitchen” of the work. All of it is so valuable. Unfortunately, I have always been very sad and critical about education in our country. I tried to get all the education I could in terms of communication. In terms of career, however;

- I received theater and screenwriting training at the Media Art Center.
- I received Diction training from our instructor Ayşe Olcay at Üsküdar Üniversitesi. (An incredible training.)
- I received Advanced Acting training from my director Ayhan Özen.
- The fact that I have these listed on my actor's card, besides horse riding, sword fighting training, is enough to present me as a professional actor candidate.

## ***- We would also like to hear about your Üsküdar Üniversitesi adventure. How did you choose this place, and how did you spend your time at school?***

I was unaware of Üsküdar Üniversitesi. My father found it, honestly, because it was close to the metro and our home. Both of the departments I wanted were there: Advertising and Cinema. That's how I enrolled. Only I and our instructor Can Diker know how I was at the university. Even now, when I think about it, I say “wow.” I majored in Advertising Design. Then I wanted a change and did a Double Major in Cinema, and I'm glad I did! I stopped studying at a desk and started filming short scenarios I wrote alone or with the team at every opportunity. Meanwhile, I found myself in our instructor Can Diker's office at every chance. Our instructor wasn't easily pleased. I constantly brought new, updated scenarios and waited for him to say “bravo.” I don't remember, maybe he did at some point. I cannot deny my university its due. I loved my instructors/teachers very much; after a while, we became like colleagues. And whenever I wanted, I could get as much equipment as I needed and shoot films at every opportunity. I brought an award to my school in the field of research with the team, but I couldn't bring one for film. That remained a lingering desire. I couldn't shoot a film, but I participate as an actress in projects, which somewhat eases my mind. Here's to many more projects…

## ***- In one of your interviews, you say, 'cinema is my destiny.' How is it possible for individuals to internalize their fields in this way? ***

While preparing for the university entrance exam, I considered taking a break from, or even quitting, the industry. Not long after, I found myself back on the fringes of the industry. Then, I found myself within the industry: shooting music videos, as the face of my department's promotional film at university, on sets, alongside screenwriters, writers, and producers. I realized that cinema is my destiny. This time, I didn't think about quitting, as long as cinema didn't quit me. Does one ever leave what they love?

## ***- You participated in various projects, and most recently in the Presidential Teachers' Day video? Would you like to share something about these projects?***

In summary;

- I had signed a 10-episode advertising deal with E-bebek.
- Çetmilli KaraAli (The August 30th film shot for the Governorship) – directed by Mesut Gengeç
- The Occupation of İzmir – directed by Mesut Gengeç
- Aşkın Ömrü feature film
- Fedakar Image film – directed by Bünyamin Yaşar

In particular, the Fedakar image film, my most recent project, holds a very special place for me. I had previously worked behind the camera with the technical team, and going there as the lead actor that day surprised everyone. Myself included. It was a very beautiful experience for me. And celebrating the day of my esteemed teachers, who contributed so much, with a project I was part of, brought a different kind of happiness. For deeming me worthy of this opportunity… I thank Hakan Yıldız first, and then Bünyamin Yaşar and Seyit Giden, who directed our magnificent film.

## ***- What advice can you offer to your friends who have career plans in the field you are in?***

Conditions changed, I changed, many things changed, but the thoughts behind these sentences of mine have never changed. Please observe and take them seriously.

I am aware that most of the ideas you think are unique and different have been done before. You've participated in countless competitions; but more mediocre projects than yours have won awards. Don't give up! Don't stop producing, filming, writing, or scribbling; because I haven't, and I won't. Don't give up; because you can be better in the areas that bother you. If you don't write your own script, you'll have to live with films you don't like. Don't say, “These things don't work without connections” for cinema or any other industry. Spend the time you'd use thinking about these things on practically producing tangible results. It truly has a greater impact. Don't underestimate any job. I was a walking shadow, an art assistant (porter); but I met people in the industry. I met producers, directors, and I wrote the story for a horror film called “Hannas 2” for a producer I met. After meeting Mesut Gengeç (Producer/Director), I supported his projects both behind the camera and almost chose my own character in his projects at every opportunity. I met Hakan Yıldız, the producer of a project I worked on as a costume assistant, and took on a leading role in the Teachers' Day project filmed for the Presidency. You can imagine the rest. And please, have a stance. The industry is already complex and strange. Be yourself. Nothing is as impossible or as far away as you think. You are as close as you desire and act in line with that desire. It's worth taking that step, even if it's just to prevent undeserving people from getting opportunities.
