Assistant Professor Dr. Ayşenur Turan from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital Restorative Dentistry provided information on some frequently asked questions regarding both smile aesthetics, tooth sensitivity, and filling preferences. **Composite bonding, a frequently used method in smile aesthetics!** Assistant Professor Dr. Ayşenur Turan stated that oral and dental health applications serve not only aesthetic expectations but also the preservation of function and comfort, saying, “One of the most frequently used methods in smile aesthetics is composite aesthetic fillings, also known as composite bonding applications.” Assistant Professor Dr. Turan stated that this procedure is performed by placing and shaping composite filling material layer by layer on the tooth surface, adding, “Most of the time, no abrasion is done on the tooth, or minimal abrasion is sufficient. Composite bonding can be used to close gaps between teeth, correct fractured and cracked teeth, provide symmetry in the smile, and especially to eliminate deformities in the front teeth. It is usually completed in a single session, and results can be obtained within 1–2 hours. It is known as a painless procedure. Furthermore, one of its most important advantages is that it can be removed or renewed if desired. Thanks to this feature, it offers both an aesthetic and a reversible option.” **Not every tooth sensitivity is a sign of decay!** Assistant Professor Dr. Ayşenur Turan also stated that, besides aesthetic applications, one of the most common reasons for patients to seek treatment is tooth sensitivity, saying, “However, not every tooth sensitivity is a sign of decay. First, the cause of the sensitivity needs to be evaluated.” Assistant Professor Dr. Turan gave the example, “Due to gum recession, the root surface can become exposed. Since the root surface is not covered with enamel, it becomes more sensitive to cold and heat, and sensitivity can develop.” She continued: “Another reason is bruxism, which is teeth clenching and grinding. This condition can lead to tooth wear and cause sensitivity. Similarly, aggressive brushing habits and the consumption of acidic beverages can also cause wear on the tooth surface, creating sensitivity. If the sensitivity increases especially during the consumption of sweets and is felt localized in a specific area, then decay may be suspected. In such a situation, it is definitely recommended to consult a dentist.” **Amalgam fillings pose no risk, except in special circumstances!** Assistant Professor Dr. Ayşenur Turan pointed out that existing fillings are also frequently discussed when tooth sensitivity and aesthetic concerns are at stake, saying, “Many questions are asked, especially about amalgam fillings, also known as gray fillings.” Assistant Professor Dr. Turan reminded that amalgam fillings are materials that have been used for a long time and are extremely durable, concluding her words as follows: “The mercury they contain is in a stable structure with other metals and does not release mercury as long as it remains in the mouth. However, during the removal of the filling, mercury vapor may be released due to the effect of heat and friction. Therefore, the removal process should be carried out by providing appropriate isolation methods and necessary conditions. Amalgam fillings can be removed in cases such as decay forming underneath, the filling breaking, or not being preferred for aesthetic reasons. Otherwise, as long as they remain firm in the mouth, there is no mercury release.
