## Özet

Experts say that with the summer heat, the use of air conditioning has become a significant trigger for migraine sufferers.

## İçerik

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini, stating that sudden temperature changes, low humidity, and direct cold air currents can increase headache attacks, said, 'Moving from the extreme heat outside to an ice-cold air-conditioned room collapses protective mechanisms in migraine sufferers with a sensitive nervous system, paving the way for severe headaches.' Dr. Şalçini, pointing out that air conditioning-induced migraine attacks can be more severe and last longer, emphasized that measures such as the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments not exceeding 6-7 degrees, maintaining humidity balance, and correct air conditioner direction are effective in reducing the risk of attacks. Dr. Şalçini also reminded that adequate water consumption and regular sleep form the basis of migraine control in summer months.

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, within the scope of Migraine and Severe Headache Awareness Month, made statements about how air conditioning use in summer months triggers migraines and severe headaches, and the lifestyle and environmental measures that should be taken to reduce these risks.

**Air conditioning use poses a hidden threat to migraine sufferers in summer!**

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini, reminding that June is recognized globally as Migraine and Severe Headache Awareness Month, said, 'With the onset of summer heat, air conditioning use becomes a hidden threat for migraine sufferers.'

Dr. Şalçini, pointing out that sudden temperature changes created by air conditioners, the rapid decrease in ambient humidity, and the direct cold air current blown by the device can directly trigger migraine attacks by stimulating blood vessels and nerve endings in the brain, explained, 'Especially moving from the extreme heat outside to an ice-cold air-conditioned room collapses protective mechanisms in migraine sufferers with a sensitive nervous system, paving the way for severe headaches. The release of dust and allergens accumulated in device filters into the environment also stands out as another important factor accelerating this process.'

**Air conditioning-induced migraine attacks can be more resistant to painkillers and last longer!**

Dr. Şalçini stated that migraine attacks developing due to air conditioning use do not clinically show a fundamental symptom difference from attacks triggered by other factors, and continued as follows:

'However, they can differ in terms of pain severity and some accompanying discomforts. Direct exposure to cold air currents, in addition to headaches, leads to sudden contractions in neck and shoulder muscles (myofascial pain), causing patients to feel the pain much more intensely and exhaustingly. Furthermore, the blockage or dryness of sinus passages due to dry air can add a sinusitis-like oppressive facial pain to the migraine pain. Due to this additional muscle and sinus burden, air conditioning-induced attacks can sometimes be more resistant to standard painkillers and reduce the patient's quality of life for a longer period, exceeding the normal attack duration.'

**The most critical rule for migraine sufferers is that the temperature difference should not exceed 6-7 degrees!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini, stating that it might be difficult to completely avoid air conditioning in summer, said, 'It is vital for migraine sufferers to pay utmost attention to device management to prevent attacks.'

Dr. Şalçini emphasized that the most critical rule is that the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments should not be more than 6-7 degrees, and the room temperature should ideally be kept constant between 22 and 24 degrees, and stated, 'The air conditioner's vanes should be adjusted to blow cold air towards the ceiling or an empty wall, not directly onto a person. To prevent excessive drops in humidity levels, care should be taken to keep the relative humidity in the environment between 40 and 50 percent. Furthermore, when coming home from outside, the air conditioner should not immediately be set to the coldest temperature; a gradual transition should be made to allow the body to adapt to the temperature change.'

**Do not let the air conditioning draft blow directly on you!**

Dr. Şalçini, recommending that migraine sufferers keep a humidifier (cold mist) in the room to balance the drying effect of air conditioners on the ambient air, said, 'To minimize the triggering effect of airborne dust and allergens, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers should be used with air conditioners.'

Dr. Şalçini also mentioned other measures that can be taken, stating, 'As a physical precaution, transparent air conditioner wind deflectors installed in front of air conditioners, which prevent direct airflow to the person, offer a very effective solution. In addition to device-based solutions, keeping a glass of water in the room while the air conditioner is operating or ensuring natural air circulation with a slightly open window also helps maintain air quality.'

**Adequate water consumption is the most effective method against migraine in summer!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini, stating that focusing solely on air conditioners is not enough for migraine and severe headaches in summer, concluded by saying:

'A general lifestyle management is required. Since dehydration in hot weather is the biggest enemy of migraine, it is essential to consume at least 2.5-3 liters of water even if sitting under air conditioning during the day. When leaving air-conditioned areas, quality sunglasses and a hat should definitely be used to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and a light shawl or cardigan should be kept in the bag against sudden heat shocks. Finally, since changing sleep patterns and bright sunlight can also trigger attacks in summer, keeping sleep hours constant and avoiding trigger foods are key to comfortably getting through this period.'
