## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Such events have great benefits”**

Üsküdar University Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan delivered the opening speech of the event. Emphasizing the importance of sharing knowledge and experience, Tarhan stated: “Such events truly have great benefits. First and foremost, they provide an excellent sharing of knowledge and experience. They also involve literature sharing and offer a significant networking opportunity for an individual's development journey. They are extremely valuable both in terms of fostering friendships and establishing professional connections. It is very important to sustain such events. Perhaps more comprehensive work can be done by bringing similar programs together and grouping a few related fields. If continued in this manner, students will see the benefits of these events much more clearly in the future.” He began his speech by saying.

## **A high sense of responsibility is required…**

Narrating an example from his medical career, Tarhan said: “I have an experience that has been a lesson to me, an event that deeply affected me. In the 1980s, I was working at Erzincan Military Hospital. At that time, there were no anesthesiologists; we administered anesthesia with a technician. A soldier was prepared for varicocele surgery. It was actually a simple, routine operation. During the surgery, a neurologist colleague said, ‘Give oxygen,’ and the technician did, but there was no improvement. The blood was coming out very dark, deep-colored. Following this, they quickly completed the surgery. After the operation, the patient began to wake up, but not as expected. He couldn’t fully open his eyes. Eventually, he was referred to psychiatry. He just couldn’t recover. It turned out he had developed hypoxic encephalopathy, meaning his brain hadn’t received enough oxygen. When we investigated the cause, we realized that the oxygen cylinder had been swapped with the nitrous oxide cylinder. Can you imagine? A 20-year-old soldier developed an Alzheimer’s-like condition in a short time. He didn’t recognize himself, didn’t know where he was, didn’t remember being a soldier. It was a truly dreadful situation. Here, the technician’s most basic responsibility, a double-check, had not been performed. While oxygen was thought to be given, nitrous oxide was actually administered, and the brain was deprived of oxygen. If the surgery had lasted a little longer, the patient might have died. This example alone clearly demonstrates how sensitive your anesthesia profession is and how high a sense of responsibility it requires.” He used the expressions.

## **“It is also very important for the anesthesia team to be prone to teamwork”**

Emphasizing the importance of teamwork in anesthesia, Tarhan said: “In other professions, for example, a 2-3 percent error rate might be tolerated. Someone working in another field might make that many errors, but in healthcare, especially as part of a surgical team, this rate is unacceptable. Think of it like piloting. Even the slightest mistake made by a pilot can lead to very serious consequences. The same applies to the anesthesia profession. Because an error made might be a one-in-a-million error for you, but for that patient, it is a 100 percent error. Even a single mistake carries great significance. Therefore, acting with a sense of ethical responsibility is extremely important in this profession. The anesthesia team, in particular, needs to work with such sensitivity. It is also very important for the anesthesia team to be prone to teamwork. There is a team here, and this team must operate like clockwork during the surgical process. Therefore, mastering the process, closely following the technological developments of the devices used, is very valuable for everyone on the anesthesia team. At the same time, personal development and being open to up-to-date information are indispensable for this profession. Because new information and new opportunities are always emerging.” He spoke in this manner.

## **“This perspective develops a person”**

Explaining the importance of having vision with examples, Tarhan said: “There is a very striking anecdote about Mimar Sinan. One day, while building the Selimiye Mosque, he encountered two of his workers. He asked one, ‘What do you do?’ The worker replied, ‘I work for daily wages.’ He asked the same question to the other. That one said, ‘I am building the world’s greatest temple.’ Mimar Sinan then observed these individuals and saw that the person who said, ‘I am building the world’s greatest place of worship,’ eventually became a chief and rose in rank. This is how vision develops a person. If your vision is limited to just ‘how much work will I do today,’ if you are only focused on performing your task, development is very difficult. But if you have vision, if you aim beyond what you can do, then you develop yourself. Another example related to this is told during the opening of NASA during Kennedy’s time. When Kennedy visited NASA, he met a cleaner at the door. He asked him, ‘What do you do?’ The cleaner said, ‘I am serving America’s space project.’ Do you see the vision here? Just like Mimar Sinan’s story. That’s what vision is. This perspective develops a person. This applies to every profession. As a more senior person, I wanted to share such experiences with you. I wish you all a successful congress. I sincerely hope that the Vocational School of Health Services continues this event in a sustainable manner.” He concluded his speech by saying.

## **Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “You are doing a very sacred and serious job”**

Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör delivered the opening speech of the event. Güngör said: “You are doing a very sacred and serious job. You directly touch people, and you are present at the most critical moments of the professional process. Therefore, it is very valuable to reinforce your knowledge not only in classrooms and laboratories but also in event halls like this, by meeting with professionals from the sector. Such social and scientific events provide the first interactive touches to the profession and guide your future. I wholeheartedly congratulate the Vocational School of Health Services for initiating this event, and I wish it to develop further each year with a different theme. Our goal should be to expand this organization to include other universities, increase knowledge sharing, and make this event a brand. If the Vocational School of Health Services wants it, it will achieve it; if our students want it, they will achieve much more. Take ownership of this event, let’s grow it, brand it, and reflect our university’s strong brand value in this event as well. I congratulate all of you and wish for a productive event.” she said.

## **Prof. Dr. Mesut Karahan: “Our students continue to meet healthcare professionals”**

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Director Prof. Dr. Mesut Karahan delivered his speech at the event. Karahan said: “We have built our education model on three pillars: theoretical courses, laboratory applications, and vocational training in enterprises. As a fourth pillar, we added events and projects. In the 2024-2025 academic year, we organized a total of 169 events. Our students continue to meet healthcare professionals and receive training by visiting various institutions. For example, we conducted a hands-on activity on sleep with our neurophysiology students. Some of our students received certified training at AFAD. Projects are also very valuable to us. Currently, we have 13 active TÜBİTAK 2209-A and B projects led by our students. Students manage their projects, while instructors provide mentorship. We aim to further develop this fourth pillar.” He spoke in this manner.

## **Lecturer Merve Aydın Karabaş: “Working in this field requires patience, experience, and sacrifice”**

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Anesthesia Program Head Lecturer Merve Aydın Karabaş delivered her speech within the scope of the event. Karabaş said: “This field of science, which requires attention and care at all times, is a multidisciplinary and highly responsible area where decisions directly affecting human life are made. Working in this field requires not only knowledge but also patience, experience, and sacrifice. Healthcare professionals working in anesthesia are the unseen but indispensable heroes of medicine. I call them unseen because they usually work in intensive care or operating rooms. Most of the time, we encounter them during our most critical, most anxious, or unconscious moments. We know that they are always by our side during the most sensitive moments of life.” She used the expressions.
