## Özet

Experts state that artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that, in one aspect, simplifies life, but its uncontrolled use carries psychological risks.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, pointing out that artificial intelligence does not directly take over human behavior but can be guiding and manipulative when misused, said, 'Artificial intelligence is a system designed to learn through patterns of human behavior. The real issue to be discussed is with what intention, by whom, and for what purpose this system is used.' Demir emphasized that the boundaries of artificial intelligence are clear, especially in the field of mental health, and noted that psychotherapy is a process based on human relationships. Demir stated that parasocial bonds established with artificial intelligence, while offering comfort in the short term, weaken the capacity to form real relationships in the long term, and warned that this constantly affirming and conflict-avoidant structure could hinder an individual's psychological development.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir made statements about the importance of controlled and conscious use of artificial intelligence, addressing its effects on human life and mental health, especially in terms of psychotherapy, relationship-building skills, and thinking processes.

**Artificial intelligence does not take over our behavior, but it can guide us when misused!**

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, defining artificial intelligence as 'a power that has silently entered our lives today, but whose impact is steadily growing,' said, 'This system, which continues to develop while we sleep, learns from our behaviors while we browse social media, and even listens to us while we chat, has now become an inseparable part of daily life.'

Demir, answering 'no' to the question, 'Is it possible for artificial intelligence to take over our behaviors, thoughts, and emotions?' continued, 'However, the issue is not that simple. Artificial intelligence is a system designed to learn through patterns of human behavior. The real issue to be discussed is with what intention, by whom, and for what purpose this system is used. Because the power behind artificial intelligence can indirectly affect individuals' ways of thinking, feelings, and behaviors, and even make them vulnerable to manipulation.'

**Though it has intelligence, it does not have real emotions!**

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, noting that the origins of artificial intelligence date back quite a long time, said, 'The process extends back to the 1600s, to the history of philosophy and mathematics. The invention of a calculator capable of performing four operations by the mathematician-philosopher Leibniz also brought with it the question, "Are systems capable of performing some tasks instead of humans possible?"'

Demir stated that the criticisms directed at the calculator at that time – 'people will become unable to think,' 'jobs will be taken away from us' – bear great resemblance to today's discussions about artificial intelligence, and said the following:

'Today, we ask similar questions; 'Which professions will disappear? Will our children be unemployed? Will the value of human labor decrease?'. Artificial intelligence is a digital system that mimics the information processing logic of the human brain. Just as the human brain works through neurons and synapses, artificial intelligence processes data through digital neural networks. But there's a critical difference; intelligence exists, but emotion does not.

Today, artificial intelligence can imitate emotions; but it cannot truly feel them. The capacity to produce emotions and the reality of these emotions are still unique to humans. Recently, some artificial intelligence systems using offensive language or giving human-like responses might create the impression that these systems are 'humanized.' However, this situation is mostly a result of ethical and behavioral adjustment changes made in the background. At this point, the question 'if some moral or behavioral modules can be changed, what else can be made to be done by artificial intelligence?' becomes important.'

**Psychotherapy cannot be left to artificial intelligence!**

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, stating that artificial intelligence is actively used in the field of health today, especially in diagnostic and data analysis processes, said, 'Although hospitals staffed solely by artificial intelligence may not seem realistic in the near future, structures that reduce the error margin of experts and function as decision support systems are quite promising.'

At this point, Demir noted that artificial intelligence can play a beneficial role when regarded not as a replacement for humans, but as a tool that supports them, and explained, 'In the field of mental health, the boundaries are much clearer. Psychotherapy is based on a real and sincere relationship between two people. The element as important as techniques, methods, or schools is the bond established. For this reason, it is currently not possible for artificial intelligence to perform psychotherapy, and it is ethically problematic. Despite this, we see many people using artificial intelligence systems like a therapist. People confide in these systems, share their emotions, and form bonds. It is precisely at this point that the concept of 'parasocial relationship' comes into play.'

**No conflict, no development!**

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, stating that a parasocial relationship refers to a one-sided bond formed with a non-living entity as if it were alive, said, 'This concept, first defined with the widespread adoption of television, has gained a new dimension with artificial intelligence today.'

Demir, pointing out that a real relationship involves conflict, disappointment, rejection, and compromise, stated, 'All these processes support an individual's psychological development. However, artificial intelligence is programmed to satisfy the user. It mostly offers an affirming, conflict-avoidant structure. If there's no conflict, there's no development. While this situation provides comfort and a sense of understanding in the short term, in the long term, it weakens the individual's ability to form social bonds, psychological resilience, and capacity for tolerance in real relationships. Especially with the growing pandemic of loneliness today, this process becomes even riskier.'

**The risk begins when artificial intelligence turns into an authority that governs us!**

Clinical Psychologist Merve Umay Candaş Demir, emphasizing that asking artificial intelligence about everything means disabling our thinking skills, said, 'The brain dulls unused skills over time. Therefore, artificial intelligence should be seen not as an 'expert' but as an intern. Questioning what it says, thinking critically, and making the final decision with human intellect is the healthy approach.'

Demir underlined that artificial intelligence is valuable when used as a tool that simplifies life and increases productivity, and concluded her words as follows:

'However, the risk begins when it turns into an authority that governs us and shapes our decisions. If necessary, doing an AI detox, setting digital boundaries, and making space for real human relationships will be protective for our mental health.'
