Prof. Dr. Atamer emphasized that this process can be slowed down with proper nutrition and lifestyle changes, adding that addressing essential deficiencies such as protein, fiber, fruit and vegetable consumption, and vitamins D, B12, and calcium is of great importance. Prof. Dr. Atamer also underlined that the unconscious use of vitamins can cause harm instead of benefit and reminded that supplements must be taken under medical supervision. Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer made statements about the changes occurring in the immune system during the aging process and how nutrition and correct vitamin use affect this process. **Aging leads to weakening of the immune system and an increased risk of disease! ** Reminding that human lifespan has extended, Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer said, 'The average age of society is gradually increasing. With aging, certain changes occur in the immune system, just as in all other organ systems.' Stating that the immune system's duty is to protect us from infections, cancer, and autoimmune diseases, Prof. Dr. Atamer said, 'With the age-related decline in immune system functions, these diseases begin to appear more frequently. As a result of aging, the immune system is suppressed to a certain extent. Although the number of some specialized immune cells proportionally decreases, the main problem is the inadequate or disproportionate response of the immune system in situations where it should respond, due to impairments in its functions. Diagnosing immune system insufficiency in the elderly can be more challenging.' **Over time, a decrease in the body's ability to adapt to environmental factors is observed!** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer noted that our immune system functions throughout our lives, stating, 'Just like in all other systems, changes occur in our immune system.' /> Emphasizing that aging is a natural and immutable process of human life, Prof. Dr. Atamer explained, 'In this process, a time-dependent decrease in the body's ability to adapt to environmental factors is observed. All these changes can occur at different rates in each individual due to reasons such as genetic characteristics, lifestyle, and diseases. Time-dependent changes lead to loss of function. General control mechanisms in organ systems decrease.' **Nutrition can slow down age-related immune decline! ** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer pointed out that nutrition can slow down age-related immune decline, stating, 'Deficiencies, especially of Omega-3, vitamin B12, calcium, and iron, cause the immune system to weaken.' Therefore, Prof. Dr. Atamer noted that for the immune system in old age, the diet must include whole grains, carbohydrates, adequate amounts of protein, and sufficient fruits and vegetables, adding, 'There are studies indicating that vitamin and mineral supplements strengthen the immune system. In advanced age, deficiencies of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and calcium can be common, so supplementation may be necessary. Vitamins A, E, folic acid, and vitamin C should also be consumed in adequate amounts. Furthermore, sufficient exercise should be done, balanced nutrition should not be neglected, and smoking and alcohol should be avoided.' **Vitamin use should be determined based on medical opinion and examinations! ** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer underlined that the popular belief that taking many vitamins strengthens immunity is incorrect, stating, 'Because some vitamins taken in excess of what is needed can be stored in the body and cause harm, while the excess is excreted in the urine.' Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer concluded his remarks by stating that vitamin use should be determined entirely according to medical opinion and examinations: 'Especially in individuals with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease, nutrition needs to be adjusted accordingly due to the medications used. The immune system can weaken due to chronic diseases. Therefore, strengthening foods should be consumed. In people using medication, nutrient absorption and the immune system can be affected depending on the drug. For example, in those using blood pressure medication, sufficient fluid intake is beneficial due to fluid loss. Adequate vitamin D should be taken, and physical activity is very important. During old age, daily caloric needs decrease. These individuals tend to eat less. However, during this period, nutrition should consist of three main meals and three snacks. Foods high in protein and fiber, along with sufficient fruits and vegetables, should be consumed. Daily water intake should be at least two liters.' ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66052](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66052) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/as-age-advances-immunity-also-weakens*
