Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychologist Eda Ergür states that attention deficit is not a resistance or unwillingness under the child's control, but a neurologically based disorder, and emphasizes that creating an appropriate environment by supporting the child according to their personal learning style will benefit their academic performance. Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychologist Eda Ergür stresses that students who have difficulty concentrating in school, listening to the teacher, following lessons, and making careless mistakes should not be overlooked. Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychologist Eda Ergür made evaluations and shared her recommendations regarding the effects of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder on a child's school adjustment process. **Adaptation can be difficult after a long holiday** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Eda Ergür stated that with the new school term, children may find it difficult to adapt to school and lessons after a long holiday, and added, “While some children adapt easily, the adaptation process can be longer and more challenging for others. When academic expectations at school increase, and the child starts to feel stressed and does not want to go to school, it is important to quickly notice these symptoms and consult a specialist. The earlier children's problems are identified and appropriate support is provided quickly, the more it can prevent the child from developing prejudice and resistance towards school.” **Students who make careless mistakes should not be overlooked** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Eda Ergür stated that one of the most common problems that arise when children start school is “Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” and continued her words as follows: “If your child daydreams a lot, forgets everything or loses their belongings, is constantly fidgety, talks without hearing their surroundings, cannot wait for their turn, or struggles in group games – in short, if they cannot manage their attention, control their impulsive behaviors, and are hyperactive, it would be appropriate to seek a specialist evaluation without delay. Children with attention deficit frequently experience forgetfulness and difficulties in planning skills. Students who have difficulty concentrating in school, listening to the teacher, following lessons, and making careless mistakes should not be overlooked, and time should not be wasted by thinking they will improve over time.” **Attention deficit is not under the child's control** Ergür stated that families often think the child does this consciously with statements like 'They spend hours at the computer or in front of the television but cannot focus when they open a book; their interest wanders,' adding, “However, attention deficit is not a resistance or unwillingness under the child's control, but a neurologically based disorder. It is essential to get specialist support to strengthen attention skills, problem-solving, and planning abilities. They will need these skills not only for their academic life but also to improve their entire life positively.” **Support should be provided to the child according to their learning style** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Eda Ergür stated, “If the child is performing below their capacity, recognizing this situation and creating an appropriate environment by supporting them according to their personal learning style will not only benefit the child's academic performance but also prevent their self-confidence from being shaken by falling behind their friends. As the attention system becomes active, the child can focus on what is taught at school, and as they see what they can do, they become motivated, reinforcing positive feelings about school.” **A treatment plan suitable for the child's condition is being prepared** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Eda Ergür emphasized that every child and the difficulties they experience are unique, stating, “For this reason, when dealing with attention deficit, a treatment plan suitable for the child's condition is developed. It is observed that behavioral methods and cognitive strategies aimed at developing the child's attention, concentration, task completion, and impulse control have a positive effect on the functioning of brain regions responsible for attention and impulse control. Therefore, one should not think it's too late; receiving support, no matter at what point it is detected, will prevent future difficulties.” **Awareness of problems is very important** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Eda Ergür stated that it is very important for families to understand the reasons for the problems their children experience at school and at home, adding, “Only after this awareness can they learn how to help improve their child's behavior and learning skills. Understanding children well and maintaining healthy communication is crucial in supporting learning skills, just as it is in every other area.” --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/attention-deficit-and-hyperactivity-disorder-makes-school-adjustment-difficult*
