Experts state that the most important point in drug use is the treatment adherence process, drawing attention to the fact that serious side effects can be observed if the usage regimen recommended by the doctor is not followed, or if dosages are changed or skipped by the family. Experts recommend that drug dosages be adjusted under specialist control. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Floortime therapy models also provide significant benefits according to experts' views. Every year, April is celebrated as Autism Awareness Month worldwide. Starting from April 2, which was declared World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations in 2007, awareness studies related to autism are carried out and ways to find solutions to problems are explored for a month throughout the world. Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Ali Mert Beşenek shared information about starting drug treatment, the treatment process, and beneficial therapy models in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. **Medications can be beneficial** Specialist Dr. Ali Mert Beşenek stated that children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may need to receive drug treatment in some cases and continued his words as follows: “Medications used in ASD are planned according to additional psychiatric illnesses and conditions accompanying ASD, rather than autistic symptoms. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is very frequently detected in these children, and drug treatment may be required to control problems such as difficulty concentrating, excessive activity, and impulsivity. Furthermore, medications can also be used in the treatment of depression and anxiety-related conditions that may be observed particularly in children diagnosed with high-functioning autism or atypical autism. In addition, in cases of excessive anxiety and resistance to change that may originate from ASD itself, repetitive movements intensifying and disrupting daily life, anger problems, aggression, and self-harm, medications are beneficial in controlling these clinical pictures.” **Starting treatment is related to the clinical picture** Specialist Dr. Ali Mert Beşenek stated that in the drug treatment of conditions accompanying ASD, the age at which treatment will begin is entirely related to the clinical picture. He said, “Generally, for the treatment of problems associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, waiting until age 6 is an accepted approach. However, if the severity of other potential problems affects daily life and disrupts the child’s educational and social functioning, treatment can be started at any age. Generally, these treatments should be used long-term and continued under close child psychiatry follow-up.” **Drug dosages should be adjusted under specialist control** Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Ali Mert Beşenek stated that the most important point in drug use, which is also the part where families generally experience the most problems, is the treatment adherence process, and continued his words as follows: “Although the dosages of medications used according to children’s age groups are kept quite low, serious side effects can be observed if the usage regimen recommended by the doctor is not followed, or if dosages are changed or skipped by the family. In cases where the treatment regimen is not followed, even if noticeable effects of the drugs are not seen, their effectiveness may remain limited. While particularly loss of appetite and sleep problems are observed with medications given for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, the opposite, an increase in appetite, can occur with medication used for impulse control. When any side effect or adverse situation is encountered, it is of great importance for the family to consult the child psychiatrist they are following with, rather than adjusting the medications themselves, and to jointly produce a solution.” **Therapies are of great importance in treatment** Specialist Dr. Ali Mert Beşenek emphasized that just as medications are important in the treatment of additional psychiatric illnesses, therapies are equally important in the treatment of the core symptoms of ASD. He said, “Occupational therapy and sensory integration therapy are quite beneficial, especially in children diagnosed with ASD who experience sensory sensitivities, sensory integration problems, and attention problems related to sensory processes. Speech and language therapy is frequently recommended for children who primarily struggle with language acquisition, social use of language, and self-expression skills.
