Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit pointed out that the two main symptoms of autism are social and communication disorders. Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit, drawing attention to symptoms that can initially appear as a lack of reciprocal smiling and finger tracking in autism spectrum disorder, stated that the earliest periods for diagnosis are around 18 months to 2 years of age. Kilit emphasized that special education is the most prominent accepted treatment for autism disorder, also noting that occupational therapy and speech-language therapy have a very important place in autism treatment. Every year, April is celebrated as Autism Awareness Month worldwide. In April, which the United Nations declared as World Autism Awareness Month in 2007, awareness campaigns about autism are conducted globally for one month starting from April 2nd, and ways to find solutions to problems are explored. Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist at the Child and Adolescent Development and Autism Center (ÇEGOMER) located at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NP Feneryolu Tıp Merkezi, made an assessment regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder within the scope of Autism Awareness Month. Stating that autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit said, “Autism spectrum disorders are one of the neurodevelopmental conditions caused by structural and functional differences during brain development in the womb, with polygenic causes, meaning multiple genes are involved, in addition to environmental factors having varying degrees of influence on the onset and severity of the condition.” Two main symptoms of autism: Social and communication disorders Noting that 'spectrum' means a fan or an umbrella, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit said, “From this perspective, autism spectrum disorder is a disorder where the two main symptoms of autism—social and communication impairments and restricted interests—manifest differently in individuals, with varying severities and presentations. Autism spectrum disorder is used to describe a condition where various clinical presentations emerge, bringing together multiple and numerous patients.” Autism has a higher genetic transmission than bipolar disorder and schizophrenia Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit stated that today, autism is classified based on functional level, from low functioning to high functioning, or based on severity, from high severity to low severity. She said, “Autism spectrum disorders are a condition that has a genetic transmission of up to 90%, which is even higher than bipolar disorder and schizophrenia among psychiatric disorders.” Being a mother over 40 increases the risk Referring to the environmental factors of autism, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit said, “Many prenatal, during pregnancy, during birth, and postnatal factors have been reviewed as environmental factors, but today, the most effective environmental factor is considered to be the mother being over 40 years old.” Earliest diagnosis is around 18 months-2 years of age Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit noted that symptoms in autism spectrum disorders can initially appear as a lack of reciprocal smiling and finger tracking, and stated that the earliest periods for diagnosis are around 18 months to 2 years of age. Problems related to social communication and speech emerge Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit stated that autism spectrum disorder symptoms can be examined under two main headings: “Especially problems related to social communication and speech can be listed. Symptoms include complete absence of speech, no eye contact, not looking when called by name, unawareness of others, not initiating verbal or non-verbal communication with others, lack of joint attention, and not using the index finger for pointing. It should be remembered that due to the term 'spectrum' mentioned above, these symptoms can manifest from very low to very high severity.” They are obsessive in one area and insistent on sameness Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit stated that restricted interests are noteworthy in autism disorder, saying, “Noteworthy characteristics of individuals with autism include their obsessions in a particular area, their insistence on sameness, and their non-acceptance of daily and momentary changes in spatial-temporal terms. Stereotypical movements, such as hand-flapping or spinning around, can also occur in individuals with autism. Individuals with autism may also experience episodes of crying and laughing without apparent reason.” The most prominent treatment: special education Emphasizing that the most prominent accepted treatment for autism disorder is special education, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit said, “From the moment we diagnose autism, we immediately refer them to special education. In addition, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy also hold a very important place in autism treatment. Recently, activity therapies and behavioral techniques have also emerged among autism therapies.” Diagnosis should be made before 3 years of age Noting that autism diagnosis is a disorder that should be made before the age of 3, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neriman Kilit said, “While it is mentioned that some children have normal development up to 18 months-2 years of age, in some children, language development may be observed as not normal from the beginning. Generally, when we look at autism, physical posture differences are not mentioned, but walking on tiptoes is one of the symptoms specifically seen in autism.
