## Özet
Experts state that in the recent period when war news is on the agenda, some individuals may exhibit avoidance behavior, adding that traumatic events can affect not only those who experience them but also those who witness them.
## İçerik
Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that individuals sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously exhibit avoidance behaviors to protect themselves from fear, stress, and anxiety. He said, “These behaviors are a reflection of a person's efforts to maintain emotional balance and cope with stress. However, in the long run, such avoidance behaviors can delay the process of an individual confronting their own traumas.” Beyaz emphasized that fears can become more pronounced, especially when events are presented through visual and audio media, and highlighted that finding balance for mental health involves both distancing oneself when necessary and consciously seeking information.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz made statements regarding the causes, types, and effects of avoidance behaviors that can emerge even when not directly exposed to traumatic events.
**Avoidance can occur even without direct exposure to traumatic events!**
Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz explained that avoidance behavior can be defined as an escape response aimed at rejection or denial, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously, in response to a distressing or disturbing event or situation, driven by a quick and temporary need for relief. He stated, “Avoidance can be classified as cognitive (avoiding thinking about certain topics), emotional (avoiding experiencing certain emotions or feelings), or contextual (avoiding events or situations).”
Beyaz noted that avoidance behaviors towards traumatic events can arise as a result of a series of psychological factors such as empathy, fear, past experiences, and the need for control. He said, “These behaviors are a reflection of a person's efforts to maintain emotional balance and cope with stress. However, in the long run, such avoidance behaviors can delay the process of an individual confronting their own traumas. Traumatic events such as wars, earthquakes, and natural disasters are among the painful experiences humanity has endured throughout history. Yet, some individuals may exhibit avoidance behaviors even if they have not been directly exposed to such events.”
**Learning about traumatic events can increase people's fear and anxiety! **
Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz provided information about the reasons for this situation, stating:
“Many people tend to show empathy and sensitivity when they see such traumatic events in the news or media. These emotionally affected individuals may tend to avoid the events. Empathy reflects the ability to be sensitive to the suffering of others, and therefore, people may want to avoid watching or talking about such news.
**Learning about traumatic events can increase people's fear and anxiety**
Especially when events are presented through visual and audio media, these fears can become more pronounced. For this reason, people may prefer to stay away from such news and events. Individuals who have been directly exposed to or experienced a similar traumatic event in the past may exhibit these avoidance behaviors more distinctly.”
**Avoidance can be a reflection of a person's search for control and security! **
Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that this situation may arise from the fear of past experiences recalling and re-experiencing traumatic events. He said, “Gaining information about events can make people feel more insecure.”
Beyaz pointed out that in such situations, avoidance behaviors can be a reflection of a person's attempt to gain some control over events, suggesting that by distancing themselves from information, individuals may try to feel safe.
**Avoidance begins as an attempt to protect one's own emotional health! **
Referring to the reason for avoidance behaviors, Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated:
“Avoidance behaviors begin as a reflection of a person's self-protection mechanisms. Specifically, avoiding traumatic events aims to maintain emotional balance. Avoiding such events indicates that the person is trying to control anxiety and stress levels and avoid emotional harm. In short, avoidance begins as an attempt to protect one's own emotional health.”
Avoidance protects initially, but can deepen problems in the long run!
However, Beyaz pointed out that these avoidance behaviors can further deepen problems in the long run. He said, “Especially if a person constantly ignores events, this can mean not taking the necessary steps to address the effects of the events and heal emotionally.”
Beyaz emphasized that this situation can lead to traumatic events causing more harm to a person's mental health. He warned, “Avoidance behaviors can cause a person to postpone problems instead of confronting the effects of events and seeking support when necessary. In summary, avoidance behaviors may initially represent a person's self-protection, but in the long run, these behaviors can deepen problems further. Therefore, a healthy way to cope with traumatic events is to confront their effects, seek emotional support, and get professional help when needed. This can help a person begin the emotional healing process.”
**Balance is important! **
Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that people exhibiting avoidance behaviors regarding war or other traumatic events can be a natural reaction. He said, “It is necessary in some cases for mental health. However, this does not mean that a person should never be exposed to war or other traumatic events. Maintaining balance is important for mental health, and this balance can vary from person to person.”
**Balance in mental health is about recognizing one's emotional boundaries! **
Underlining that completely avoiding traumatic events can also have negative effects, Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz concluded his remarks as follows:
“For people to encounter such events to a certain extent and to have information about them can help them be conscious and informed about world events. This can support the development of empathy, awareness, and even the desire to provide help. Balance in mental health is about recognizing one's emotional needs and boundaries. Sometimes this may involve staying away from traumatic events for a period, while at other times it may require consciously having information about the events. Each person's needs are different, so balance is based on personal preference.
In conclusion, while people exhibiting avoidance behaviors regarding war or other traumatic events can be a correct response, this avoidance should be used in conjunction with a balanced approach for mental health.”
