## **“Seeing this requires abstract thought…”**

Emphasizing the importance of abstract reasoning, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan began his speech by saying: “Spiritual solutions, religious coping methods, stand out as an area that offers solutions to issues where psychiatry cannot find answers. Here, it is important to emphasize the difference between concrete and abstract. This is called abstract reasoning. For example, you look at an apple. There is a seed in the middle of the apple. A concrete thinker only sees that seed, but an abstract thinker sees an apple within the seed. Because there is an apple inside that seed. There is a life program, DNA, written. Seeing this requires abstract thought. That is, seeing the unseen. That is why science considers all possibilities. Creation, spirituality, and religion. Because there is no prejudice in science. You put something in the laboratory, and if you prove it, you confirm it. If you cannot prove it, you say either it is not true or it is not yet ready to be proven.”

## **“Intention is one of the most fundamental elements of the dimension of meaning”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the existence of human spiritual organs, said: “Just as we have organs in our body such as the heart, lungs, and stomach, we also have spiritual organs. Just as there are physical systems like the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and circulatory system, there is a similar system in our spiritual structure. The word ‘manevi’ (spiritual) in Arabic means ‘manasal,’ which means ‘semantic’ or related to meaning. Something has a concrete dimension and an abstract, or meaning, dimension. When we say ‘manevi,’ it is usually understood to mean only religious, but this is not correct. In fact, every action has a dimension of meaning. Music, art, and every area of life have meaning. For example, if you have an antique item and take it to the Coppersmiths' Bazaar, it might be worth 1 kuruş, but if you take the same item to an antique bazaar, it would be worth a thousand lira. Because there, its meaning is known, and its value emerges. So, everything has such a dimension of meaning. When we say humans also have spiritual organs, this is the dimension of meaning we are referring to. Here, intention is one of the most fundamental elements of the dimension of meaning. The neuroscientific correlates of intention are also being studied. This topic is closely related to conscience. Our spiritual structure is divided into mind, self (nafs), and heart. The corresponding organs can be expressed as the brain, consciousness, the quantum universe, and areas connected to the transcendent universe. Just as quantum is a field, these spiritual structures are also fields.”

## **“Prophetic stories are motivation lessons”**

Tarhan, stating that the feeling of awe creates peace in a person, said: “Spiritual values have 10 basic therapeutic powers that can be used in all illnesses. The first of these is being able to grasp the feeling of awe in a person. This feeling comforts the person, provides tranquility and peace. Ibn Sina has a beautiful saying: ‘Physicians sometimes cure, most of the time they console.’ This feeling of awe creates a tranquility and peace within the person. The word ‘huzur’ (peace) comes from the Arabic root ‘hazır’ (ready). That is, if a person can approach everything in life, positive or negative, with a ready state of mind, they are peaceful. Martin Seligman calls this authentic happiness. A person can be happy whether in prison or in a palace. This is the feeling of awe. Sincerity and prayer are another area. Adding meaning to life is another spiritual power. Patience, being able to defer gratification, resilience training, and maintaining hope are also within these spiritual values. Values such as gratitude, thankfulness, and forming warm bonds increase a person's psychological resilience. Compassion develops empathy, enriches the soul, and encourages reconciliation and cooperation. Characteristics such as honesty, accountability, justice, and predictability create a sense of competence and trustworthiness in a person. That is, being reliable. Prophetic stories are also motivation lessons in this sense. They develop a person's ability to form deep and natural social bonds. They contribute to the formation of a structure that instills confidence in people.”

## **We must establish this triple balance**

Tarhan, speaking about the concept of self-transcendence, said: “The balance of health, being, and wisdom. If we cannot establish this triple balance in our lives, if we cannot place our 'tray of mind' in a balanced way, that tray will tip over, and everything will scatter. This is also related to Maslow's hierarchy of psychosocial needs. At the end of his life, Maslow added the concept of self-transcendence to the pyramid, but this information was somehow hidden and not published. When it was published, self-actualization was placed at the top of the pyramid. However, what should have been there was self-transcendence. Maslow argued that a person should not only actualize themselves but also help others – the idea of helping others. Individuals who experience spiritual experiences can transcend themselves in this sense. They can achieve a sense of fulfillment this way. This is something that can be learned. Research shows that spiritual experiences are related to areas of the brain such as emotion regulation, self-perception, and social relationships. Furthermore, there are scientific findings indicating an up to 80 percent reduction in depression rates in individuals who personally attach high importance to religious and spiritual matters and place these values at the center of their lives.”

## **“Sincerity means ihlas (devotion/purity) and good intention” **

Tarhan, touching upon the neuroscience of sincerity, said: “20% of communication is verbal, 80% is non-verbal. The essence of this non-verbal communication is sincerity. Sincerity means ihlas (devotion/purity) and good intention. Sincerity also has its neuroscience. Mirror neurons are found in our brain, divided into emotional and motor mirror neurons. This mirror neuron system is related to empathy. Mirror neurons are needed for theory of mind. As for the neurochemistry of sincerity, when a person is sincere, oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin are released. Oxytocin is the bonding hormone, while dopamine and serotonin are pleasure and happiness hormones. These chemicals help reduce uncertainty in our lives. Uncertainty, one of Yalom's four fundamental anxieties, creates a basic anxiety in humans. Efforts to explain death, the search for freedom, overcoming loneliness, and the search for meaning are parts of this anxiety.”

## **“The fundamental component of peace is trust”**

Tarhan, stating that without trust, there can be no healthy treatment, said: “It is necessary to know the concepts of equality, fairness, and justice well. All of these are concepts with a dimension of meaning. That is, expecting the Creator's infinite mercy is possible by adhering to His just laws. Justice gives people peace. For example, a good shoemaker tries to choose the best leathers and make the highest quality shoes. Intelligent people also strive to put forth the best of their skills. We, too, will try to do this in our lives. The fundamental component of peace is trust. Without trust, health and treatment are not possible. When patience and hope combine, this recalls the story of Prophet Job. There is an expectation of healing, a feeling of hope, and negative and positive patience. Negative patience is a person's endurance against threats, calamities, and illnesses. Positive patience is setting a goal for oneself and showing patience towards it. The feeling of privacy (mahremiyet) is very important here. One must think according to concrete and abstract values, high values. These are concepts that require empathy. Being a good person is the rent for our existence.”

## **“We will start to fix the world by starting with ourselves”**

Tarhan, emphasizing that one can also be happy with ordinary things, said: “If we want to add meaning to people's lives, we must first start by fixing the world by starting with ourselves. We will not do to others what we do not want done to ourselves. We will know how to be happy with ordinary things. If we live this in our lives, when we want to help other people, our sincerity will activate the mirror neurons in their brains. Thus, trust is formed, people are convinced, and they try to internalize and apply what we say as if it were a sacred word. First, we need to believe, we ourselves must believe in the information we convey. At the end of each day, it is very important to keep daily notes asking 'What did I do today regarding these issues?' This is my most important advice to my colleagues. When you take notes, the information you write becomes 50% more permanent. If you don't take notes, information often flies away. Putting it in written form is very valuable. We should apply this design I explained in our daily practice and add meaning to our work. Human life is like a ship leaving port. If it has no destination, no compass, the wind will carry it away, and it will sink. It is the same in life…”

## **“Keeping the feeling of hope alive is the foundation of psychological resilience”**

Tarhan, stating that psychological resilience can be strengthened when one is part of a greater meaning, said: “Instead of correcting a person's negative aspects, it is necessary to identify their character strengths and work through those strengths. To help a person gain a positive perspective on the events they experience. Here, positive psychotherapy methods are effective. The goal in positive psychotherapy is not to correct the negative but to reinforce the positive. While classical psychotherapy tries to confront a person with the threat dimension of an event and develop a strategy against it, positive psychotherapy puts the person's problem aside and emphasizes the meaning the event adds to their life, what it teaches them about life. This process is also related to the concept of post-traumatic growth. Difficulties experienced are seen as experiences that develop the person and turn into gains in the future. The person is taught that their sufferings are temporary and that these difficulties will strengthen them. Thus, the person gains resilience to the challenges they face. Feeling part of a greater meaning and keeping the feeling of hope alive is the foundation of psychological resilience. When hope and patience come together, a person gains resilience and becomes psychologically stronger. When we teach psychological resilience, anxiety can be controlled. Because anxiety is actually a message, a signal to us. It says, 'Fix something!' It shows that we need to change our direction. When a person finds this search for meaning, they can achieve inner peace.”

## **“Anhedonia and lack of will are the two most important symptoms of depression”**

Tarhan, discussing the main symptoms of depression, said: “The inability to enjoy anything, or the lack of pleasure in life, is medically known as anhedonia. This is one of the eight main symptoms of depression. A person does not show interest in eating, drinking, reading, traveling, or any other activity, feeling a general indifference towards life. This condition does not necessarily have to be accompanied by feelings of sadness, grief, or sorrow. In fact, while pain, grief, and sorrow are seen as positive symptoms in depression, lack of interest is among the negative symptoms. Sometimes, a state of aboulia, meaning inability to make decisions and choices, may also emerge. Anhedonia and aboulia are the two most important symptoms of depression. Clinically, depression is suspected if symptoms last at least 3 days. If it lasts longer than 15 days, a diagnosis of major depression is made. The diagnosing doctor evaluates the times when the person feels worst. In addition to the biological treatment of depression, determining the appropriate therapy technique for the individual is very important. Spiritual therapies may not be suitable for everyone. Therefore, during the treatment process, many therapy options such as psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, and positive psychotherapy should be in our treatment toolkit. Individualized treatment should be applied by choosing the most suitable method for the person.” He concluded his words.
