Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın addressed the dangers of mobbing on individuals and provided information about coping methods. Mobbing can cause both psychological and physiological problems Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın stated that mobbing is defined as systematic and continuous psychological harassment and bullying by an individual or group towards another individual, and said, “Mobbing behaviors include constant criticism, ridicule, threats, ignoring, spreading rumors, causing alienation from work, increasing workload, or deliberately removing someone from work.” Özgenur Taşkın, drawing attention to the fact that the effects of mobbing can be severe enough not to be underestimated, said the following: “It causes an individual to doubt their self-perception, can lead to anxiety, and create a constant state of tension, stress, and fear. These symptoms are not only psychological but can also lead to physiological problems over time. They may experience psychosomatic symptoms such as sleep disorders, stomach problems, and headaches. Consequently, it can lead to a decrease in work performance, loss of motivation, thoughts of leaving work, and even, in the future, illnesses such as anxiety disorders and depression.” “Constant psychological pressure and bullying can rapidly bring about symptoms of depression” Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın, addressing the relationship between mobbing and depression, pointed out that mobbing can cause depression. Özgenur Taşkın continued her words by saying, “Symptoms of depression can rapidly appear in individuals who are under constant psychological pressure and bullying.” “Mobbing shakes an individual's self-confidence, fosters feelings of worthlessness and helplessness, and can directly push someone who already has low self-esteem into depression. These feelings are among the primary symptoms of depression. Furthermore, an individual already exhibiting symptoms of depression runs the risk of their condition worsening due to mobbing. Depression is not a disease to be taken lightly; it is one of the significant illnesses that carries a risk of suicide. In mobbing victims who are dragged into depression, depression can seriously diminish an individual's quality of life over time and, at its extreme, can lead to suicidal thoughts. Mobbing victims may feel trapped during this process, and this emotional collapse can become a state that causes suicide.” How can mobbing victims recognize symptoms of depression? Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın stated that it is easy for mobbing victims to recognize symptoms of depression, saying, “If an individual no longer wants to go to a job they previously enjoyed or approached with goals, feels mistreated by one or more people there, experiences somatic (physical) discomfort when going to work, and observes a decline in their functionality, they may be depressed due to mobbing. Mobbing victims should seek help from a specialist when they observe such symptoms.” Özgenur Taşkın, also touching upon depression symptoms that lead to suicide, stated that the most prominent feeling is hopelessness and continued as follows: “Thoughts that life is meaningless, thoughts of harming oneself or others, social isolation, severe impairments in daily functions, and an intense feeling of helplessness are present. Individuals exposed to mobbing should urgently seek help from a mental health professional if they exhibit these symptoms.” “One must first be sure that what they are experiencing is mobbing” Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın, mentioning that there are some strategies that can be used to cope with mobbing and depression in the workplace, said, “The first goal should be ‘awareness’. The individual should trust themselves and be sure that what they are experiencing is mobbing. The second step should be ‘communication’. It should be shared with trusted colleagues and a group of friends to receive emotional support.” Underlining that ‘self-care-self-worth attention’ should be among the subsequent steps, Özgenur Taşkın concluded her words as follows: “The individual should not let themselves go because they are being bullied; they should develop methods to cope with stress. Another step is ‘employer support’. The individual should share this with their workplace or department and ensure necessary measures are taken. If there is no progress up to this point, the next step should be ‘documentation’. It is necessary to document the mobbing behavior and, if required, resort to legal action. Following this comes ‘psyc hological support’. The individual should seek psychological support when they feel the mobbing and realize it is impairing their functionality. Mobbing and depression are problems that seriously affect individuals' quality of life. If not taken seriously, they can lead to suicide. With early intervention and appropriate psychological support, it is possible to overcome these problems.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.56353](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.56353) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/beware-if-you-are-subjected-to-mobbing*
