Prof. Dr. Sedanur Yavuz noted that cavities, gum recession, teeth clenching, enamel erosion, and gum diseases are among the primary causes of this sensitivity. She said, “When the enamel layer erodes, the dentin layer is exposed, leading to sensitivity upon contact with cold or hot air or beverages.” Emphasizing that the source of the problem must first be correctly identified to reduce sensitivity, Assist. Prof. Dr. Yavuz stated that toothaches due to cold air are not symptoms of another illness and usually disappear with appropriate treatment. Prof. Dr. Sedanur Yavuz provided information on the causes of tooth sensitivity due to cold weather in winter months, treatment methods, and the importance of proper oral care. Stating that with the arrival of winter, cold weather can cause tooth sensitivity for various reasons, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sedanur Yavuz said, “These reasons include dental cavities, gum recession, gum diseases, tooth erosion, and teeth clenching problems.” Assist. Prof. Dr. Yavuz stated that when the enamel layer of the tooth erodes, the underlying dentin layer is exposed, and she explained, “The dentin tubules within the dentin layer provide nerve transmission and cause sensitivity when they come into contact with cold or hot air or beverages.” **The source of the problem must be identified to reduce the complaint!** Expressing the importance of identifying the source of the problem to reduce pain complaints caused by cold weather, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sedanur Yavuz said the following: “In cases of sensitivity due to dental cavities, the cavities must be restored; in problems of sensitivity due to gum disease, necessary gum treatments should be performed. To alleviate sensitivity problems occurring on exposed root surfaces due to gum recession, root surface covering operations can be performed. For sensitivity caused by teeth clenching, night guards or Botox applications aimed at treating the clenching problem can be applied first, followed by restorations for areas with tooth erosion. In cases of erosion and gum recession caused by incorrect brushing, the brushing technique should first be corrected, followed by restoration of the eroded areas. At the same time, desensitizing toothpastes and mouthwashes can be recommended to the patient, or desensitizing agents can be applied by specialist doctors to the exposed dentin surfaces.” **Sensitivity experienced in cold weather is tooth-related and does not indicate another health problem! ** Emphasizing that tooth sensitivity or pain occurring in cold weather stems from tooth-related problems, Assist. Prof. Dr. Yavuz concluded her words as follows: “In cases of gum recession and erosion caused by incorrect, horizontal, or very hard brushing, leading to tooth sensitivity, the patient should be taught the correct brushing technique. Brushing our teeth twice a day with a medium-soft toothbrush and using dental floss once a day, brushing gently and from the gum to the tooth, reduces the formation and progression of problems.
