## Özet

Do ‘breathing exercises’ to avoid getting angry during Ramadan!

## İçerik

Experts state that the physiological difficulties people may experience during Ramadan can lead to emotional reactions, adding that drops in blood sugar levels, changes in metabolic rate, and hormonal imbalances can affect the nervous system.

Emphasizing the need to avoid situations that can trigger anger as anger problems may increase during Ramadan, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz said, “It is very important to try to shift focus when encountering triggers and to frequently practice breathing exercises.”

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz from Üsküdar University NP Etiler Medical Center evaluated the issue of some people experiencing anger problems while fasting during Ramadan.

Long-term hunger can cause anger through physiological changes

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that physiological difficulties such as hunger and thirst experienced by people during Ramadan can affect the body's biological balance, said, “Especially long-term hunger can lead to drops in blood sugar levels, changes in metabolic rate, and hormonal imbalances. These physiological changes can also affect the nervous system and lead to emotional reactions such as anger and irritability (quick temper).”

What are the effects of fasting on the brain?

Expressing that such difficulties are associated with basic urges in the lower brain, namely anger and irritability, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz continued:

“The body sends biological signals to meet its food and water needs. These signals are processed in the limbic system in the lower brain and can influence the initiation of actions aimed at satisfying basic needs. At the same time, the cortical areas in the upper brain also have the ability to control and direct these basic urges. Cortical control in the upper brain can help individuals balance their emotional responses and cope with anger.

Many factors and different experiences influence each individual's reactions. Furthermore, the ability of the upper brain, which distinguishes humans from other living beings, can help individuals control anger and irritability despite hunger and thirst they may encounter during Ramadan. The important point here is the individual's desire and effort to cope with this situation despite hunger and thirst.”

Does nicotine withdrawal increase anger?

Noting that nicotine, the main active component of cigarettes, also affects the central nervous system, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz said, “Individuals with nicotine addiction become dependent on regular nicotine intake, so their bodies develop tolerance over time. Nicotine binds to specific receptors in the brain, increasing dopamine release, and is a neurotransmitter that controls feelings of pleasure/reward/enjoyment in the brain. In cases of nicotine withdrawal, dopamine release decreases because the body cannot reach normal nicotine levels, which affects emotional balance. Therefore, smokers' inability to smoke during Ramadan can increase anger and irritability due to nicotine withdrawal. Nicotine withdrawal during this period can also affect emotional and cognitive problems such as difficulty concentrating, insomnia, malaise, and anxiety, in addition to anger and irritability.”

Changes in sleep and nutrition patterns can lead to anger-stress
نى
nSpecialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz also explained that sleep and regular nutrition are among the most basic physiological needs of living beings, stating, “Both contribute to the body's rest and energy renewal. Quality sleep and healthy nutrition have a significant impact on maintaining a physically and mentally healthy life. A quality night's sleep along with healthy and regular nutrition physically helps regulate metabolism and hormone balance affecting appetite, regenerate the body, and regulate emotions. Changes in sleep and nutrition patterns during Ramadan can destabilize emotional balance and negatively contribute to the emergence of emotions such as anger-stress.”

Stay away from situations that can trigger anger

nEmphasizing that while anger is one of the basic emotions, it does not have a function accompanying primary emotions, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz concluded:

“We do not feel anger directly towards anything. Anger carries the message that something is not going well. In dealing with anger, it is first important to be aware of the primary emotion that anger accompanies and the thoughts and beliefs that guide it.

Since anger problems may increase during Ramadan, it is very important to stay as far away as possible from situations that can trigger anger, to try to shift focus when encountering triggers, and to frequently practice breathing exercises. It should be remembered that the state of anger and tension during Ramadan is the result of a transitional period, and with adaptation during this period, anger becomes more controllable.”
