Özdemir pointed out that there are many choices on the path of life and one walks a path in line with these choices, referring to the choices he made as a student. Emphasizing the importance of self-development in line with these choices, Özdemir said; “In 1968, when I came to the city to attend middle school, I decided that I had to do something. Because I had many options. Like my other friends, I could have turned to bad habits. As my first choice, I chose books. Books were a harbor for me, I lived in books, and I loved the people in books more than those on the street. Books were my private garden. Books were the milestones of my life journey. I would like you to know Cemil Meriç. Because at one stage of his life, he lost both his eyes. Despite this, he left us a world of books. Books, and culture, like all lovers, are jealous, they detach you. They detach you from reality, but aren't they the real reality?” **Özdemir: “The collaboration between Üsküdar Üniversitesi and İstinye Üniversitesi is very important”** Özdemir, touching upon the importance of the collaboration between Üsküdar Üniversitesi and İstinye Üniversitesi, said; “We hope that every event, every speech organized here will be a companion for you. It will be a lesson for you. Therefore, let's continue these kinds of events. As a university, we will always continue to do this. I congratulate each and every one of my colleagues in the Psychology department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi who organized this event again. I greet you all with respect and love.” ![](https://cdn.uskudar.edu.tr/uploads/images/2022/04/01/800/img-0137_1.JPG) **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Doing something is a human trait”** Then, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who took the podium, drew attention to the human emphasis of the “Bi’Şey Yapmalı Symposium” event. Tarhan said; “The phrase ‘we should do something’ is unique to humans. That is, no living creature other than humans says this. In the imagination of a cat, a dog, or any other living creature, there is only food. For other living creatures besides humans, life is about eating, drinking, reproducing, nourishing, and sheltering. But humans are not like that. The ability for abstract thought is found only in humans. Humans think conceptually, abstractly, and symbolically, and they also produce thoughts. Another feature found only in humans is imagination. After imagining something, our brain perceives that imagined thing as a need. After feeling the need, a desire arises. In the final stage, action is taken. This requires motivation. There is a 15 percent rule in innovation. According to the 15 percent rule, if a person is doing a job, and works 10 hours, they should spend 1.5 hours imagining and thinking about that work. If they do this, they will actually be engaging in the philosophy of their work. In this way, they will revise themselves.” **“The smartest method is to benefit from the experiences of others”** Tarhan pointed out that life is too short to gain experience through trial and error, stating that the smartest method is to benefit from the experiences of others. Tarhan said; “The book ‘Zeka Tuzağı’ (Intelligence Trap) is an interesting book that can change young people's perspective. The smartest method is to benefit from the experiences of others. We neither have the time nor the life suitable to gain experience through trial and error. Therefore, benefiting from the experiences of others is the shortest way. As Mevlana said, ‘One leg should be like a compass.’ If one foot is on the ground and one foot is in the air, you can easily reach your ideals without losing touch with reality. As you do this, you will surely do beautiful things. Your generation is luckier than ours. Don't be pessimistic. The world is getting better, not worse. Wars that started in a period when winds of freedom were offered, the value of humanity was understood to this extent, and human values were discovered, ended without escalating. If this event had happened in the 1930s-1940s, it would have turned into a world war. Society and social media prevented these wars the most. Success comes with those who can be a team. Individual geniuses do not succeed. Team geniuses succeed.
