## Özet

Protecting brain health is no longer seen as merely treating neurological diseases.

## İçerik

Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Burcu Polat stated that neurology academies worldwide have announced a new roadmap aiming to make brain protection a global health standard before diseases emerge. She said, “Within this scope, four main goals that will directly affect public health have been identified.” Assoc. Prof. Polat pointed out that one in two people could be affected by a neurological disease during their lifetime, emphasizing that many factors, from childhood nutrition and head traumas to environmental risks, lifestyle habits, and scientific research, directly affect brain health. Assoc. Prof. Polat also underlined that the brain has the lifelong capacity to renew itself and that it's never too late for a healthy brain.

Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Burcu Polat of Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the preventive neurology approach, adopted by global neurology authorities, which focuses on lifelong preservation of brain health rather than just treating diseases, and the scientific, social, and individual steps required for this.

**Protecting brain health before disease emerges is becoming a global standard!**

Assoc. Prof. Burcu Polat stated that leading neurology academies worldwide have recently published joint reports and decisions. She said, “In these texts, they emphasized their aim to make not only treating diseases but also protecting brain health before diseases emerge a global standard.”

Assoc. Prof. Polat stated that within the scope of the new roadmap, four main goals that will directly affect public health have been identified: “Increasing the number of neurologists and healthcare personnel worldwide to shorten patients' access times to treatment; enabling physicians to spend more time with their patients without experiencing burnout; increasing the budget and support for scientific research carried out to find definitive solutions and new drugs for brain diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia, ALS, and stroke; preparing reliable guides for the public on how to protect brain health in daily life and conducting global campaigns to prevent diseases… In addition to these; it is very important for health education to be provided practically from primary school. Because brain health begins in the womb, a mother-to-be with developed health awareness from primary school onwards will give birth to a healthy child.”

**Neurologists can also work to advance the newly developing field of preventive neurology!**

Reminding that the brain functions as the central command and control center of the human body and is an organ responsible for our physical, mental, and social well-being, Assoc. Prof. Polat said, “Neurologists, in addition to serving as experts in brain health, can also work to advance the newly developing field of preventive neurology.”

Stating that, as in the rest of the world, our country also needs an effective brain health vision and action plan for the 21st century, Assoc. Prof. Polat used the expressions, “Brain health is having and maintaining ideal brain functions that best support a person's physical, mental, and social well-being throughout their life.”

**One in two people faces the risk of neurological disease during their lifetime! **

Pointing out that according to current research, one in two people is affected by a neurological disease or disorder at some point in their life, Assoc. Prof. Burcu Polat said:

“To protect brain health, four main areas should be focused on. The first is science. Scientific research for medical discoveries that will prevent brain diseases should be accelerated. Then, reliable and up-to-date brain health resources should be provided to healthcare professionals at all times. Governments should be worked with to enact laws protecting brain health. Practical and healthy lifestyle habits that will prevent mental decline in old age should be taught to the public from childhood.”

**Head traumas experienced in childhood can affect the brain even years later! **

Sharing scientific tips for daily life, Assoc. Prof. Polat said, “Proper nutrition from childhood reduces the risk of brain diseases. It has been proven that head traumas experienced during school age (sports injuries, traffic accidents) can negatively affect brain health even years later. Current environmental problems such as microplastic accumulation in the brain and air pollution are closely monitored by the scientific community.”

**The brain can renew itself throughout life! **

Stating, “It's never too late for the brain!”, Assoc. Prof. Burcu Polat concluded her words by drawing attention to two important concepts:

“Plasticity and cognitive capital… The brain can structurally and functionally adapt, reshape, and renew itself at every stage of life. Every brain has a varying degree of plasticity, meaning the potential to change and transform. Lifelong learning, being cognitively active (memory, attention, planning, abstraction, etc. functions), and high social interaction contribute to individuals' mental (brain) capital.

Yenigeç kalmadınız, beyin sağlığınız için hemen bugün bir yerlerden başlayın!
