One of the most talked-about concepts in recent years is **‘Burnout Syndrome.’** Burnout syndrome, manifesting with physical symptoms such as fatigue, and emotional symptoms such as pessimism and hopelessness, often emerges in highly competitive work environments. This syndrome primarily affects individuals with a high sense of responsibility working in professions requiring constant urgency and in the service sector. Burnout syndrome is less common in workplaces where words of appreciation, praise, and approval are frequently used.

Burnout syndrome, which entered the literature in the 70s, is highly prevalent in industrial societies and competitive environments. Burnout syndrome, which emerges much more easily in environments with weak social support, is closely related to an individual's inability to manage their stress. The word 'stress' itself is a concept that emerged with industrialization. The word 'stress' first appeared in the 1800s in the mining sector, referring to intersection points, stress points, pressure points, and compression points. Miners' fatigue and areas where mining loads were above normal were defined as 'stressed'. It entered the medical literature after the 60s.

Our body exhibits various reactions to burnout syndrome. Physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms can emerge. Physical symptoms may include conditions such as fatigue and insomnia. The individual feels extremely tired. There is irregularity in sleep. This disruption in sleep patterns, exhaustion, and feeling of fatigue are notable physical symptoms. That is why we call this syndrome 'burnout'.

**Pessimism and hopelessness are experienced**

Emotional symptoms are also observed in burnout syndrome. The most important emotional symptoms are the individual becoming pessimistic, hopeless, feeling worthless, unsuccessful, losing professional self-confidence, and most commonly saying 'I can't do it, I won't succeed'. Some even call this the 'trapped syndrome'. The person feels trapped in such a state of mind. They experience a feeling of being thrown into a bottomless, deep well.

**The brain always thinks negatively**

This syndrome also has cognitive symptoms. Individuals experiencing this syndrome, if they could normally manage their thoughts, could manage their emotions and stress, but because they are cognitively exhausted and collapsed, they cannot utilize their existing psychological resources. Because they are constantly thinking, the brain thinks negative things for 59 out of 60 minutes. They think, ‘I can't do it, I'm not capable, this job is beyond me, I'm completely worn out’. There is a mental block here, and a state of hopelessness and pessimism emerges.

**Behavioral impairments emerge**

Impairments can also occur in the behavioral domain. In such situations, these individuals become socially withdrawn and isolated from people. Burnout syndrome is very common in the service sector; individuals who cannot say no to people easily enter burnout syndrome. Because they cannot say no, they internalize it and say 'I'm exhausted, I can't do it'. We see it emerge in artists. They can leave filming unfinished, they can abandon the set.

**They always complain and focus on the negative**

In burnout syndrome, which can be felt with preliminary symptoms, these individuals always complain. They always complain about their situation. They cannot be happy about small things, they cannot see the positive things they possess, always focusing on the negative. They say, ‘Despite working intensely, I feel I earn very little, I get tired very quickly, I experience aimlessness, pessimism’. Forgetfulness also greatly increases in these individuals along with quick fatigue. We observe that these individuals are easily saddened. They are very sensitive. Physical illnesses begin to appear more frequently in these individuals. For instance, they don't laugh from the heart. They tend to engage in sexuality as a duty, without pleasure.

**Their work productivity may decrease**

Individuals experiencing burnout syndrome see their work productivity decrease, and they tend to magnify small problems excessively. Their functionality drops significantly, and they become individuals who cannot achieve job satisfaction. We see this syndrome most frequently in people working in the service sector and in jobs requiring constant urgency. Another characteristic of these individuals is their high sense of responsibility. Because their sense of responsibility is high, they cannot say no to anyone and cannot tolerate the failure of saying 'I can't do it'. They actually have thoughts like, ‘It would be better if I died after failing’. This is a well-intentioned approach, but every person has a limit.

**Small breaks should be taken**

To prevent burnout syndrome, individuals need to take on responsibilities and burdens in the workplace according to the situation, conditions, and their positions. It is necessary to take small breaks. If small breaks cannot be taken, a moratorium becomes necessary after a while. They say, 'I'm exhausted, I'm drained'. When completely exhausted, they leave unfinished tasks that were started by relying on them.

We observe that individuals who face unexpected events and situations without falling into despair, and actively tackle them, do not easily fall into burnout syndrome.

**Job satisfaction can prevent burnout syndrome**

Individuals' job satisfaction is very important in coping with this syndrome. When a person receives high motivation by being told 'you must do it, you must succeed, you are a lion' but then fails to do the work, they give up. However, in such situations, the individual needs small successes and rewards. Burnout syndrome is less common in workplaces where words of appreciation, praise, and approval are frequently used, but it is more common in workplaces with constant criticism. Burnout syndrome increases in environments where there is negative communication, and management attempts to instill fear through anger, shouting, and yelling. Burnout syndrome is less common in workplaces managed through dialogue and sharing, and where there is open communication.

**Stress coping skills are taught**

Initially, medication is not considered necessary for burnout syndrome. We only change these individuals' thought habits. We change their way of looking at events and their approach to them. In doing so, they learn that stress is manageable, that there is actually a way to cope with stress, and they manage it.

**Can be eliminated with psychotherapy**

The World Health Organization has defined this syndrome as burnout syndrome, categorizing it as a disease. When the syndrome is recognized in its early stages, it can be eliminated with psychotherapy.

**Life philosophy is important in the protective period**

There is a protective period before burnout syndrome. In the protective period, an individual's life philosophy is very important here. If you get discouraged by a small obstacle, you can enter burnout syndrome, but hardships develop people. In fact, some psychologists have conducted research on types of birth. The stress levels of children born via natural birth and C-section were measured. Children born via C-section, meaning those who do not enter the birth canal, emerge easily from the mother's womb. When a needle is pricked into the heels of these children, more stress hormone is secreted, but when a needle is pricked into the heels of children who went through the birth canal with difficulty for one or two hours, less stress hormone is secreted. How is this explained? The struggle of birth strengthens these children. That's why Nietzsche's saying is a very beautiful one: ‘What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.’

**Psychological resilience training strengthens**

The moment burnout syndrome is felt to begin, we definitely recommend that the individual switch from Plan A to Plan B. They should create alternative changes. This syndrome is very common in hasty and impatient individuals. Saying 'immediately, now, quickly' and being hasty and impatient is one of the most significant risks for young people today. We provide them with resilience training. We provide psychological resilience training. After a while, they emerge from this strengthened.
