## Özet

**After an 18-year-old girl was murdered by her boyfriend in Karacabey, Bursa, the follower count of the arrested 24-year-old suspect's social media account increased 15-fold overnight. Evaluating this morbid interest shown by thousands of young girls towards the murder suspect to Şenay Yurtalan from Tgrthaber.com, the President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan warned families against social desensitization and the dangers created by the digital ecosystem, saying, "Fame is not value, character is value. Making the perpetrator a phenomenon is promoting evil."**

The murder of an 18-year-old girl by her boyfriend, whose throat was cut, in Karacabey district of Bursa on October 4, 2026, plunged all of Turkey into mourning. While the 24-year-old murder suspect was arrested and sent to prison by the court, another chilling development occurred in digital platforms after the incident. The follower count of the social media account identified as belonging to the suspect increased 15-fold in a short period, and thousands of young girls following the account and writing "handsome" comments under the profile drew strong reactions.

President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated this pathological situation, which created a serious shock effect in society and fueled "killer admiration" discussions, to Şenay Yurtalan from Tgrthaber.com. Emphasizing that the current situation is a deep "moral desensitization" and erosion of empathy rather than a social madness, Prof. Tarhan pointed out that rewarding the perpetrator in the digital environment encourages crime and criminals, and made important warnings to families and the media.

## **What does following a criminal mean?**

President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: The fact that the vast majority of followers are young women immediately raises questions about what psychological motivation is driving them here. We are looking for answers to some questions here. If someone commits a murder and gains thousands of followers, the question of whether this normalizes the crime is important here.

Because for risky individuals, being a criminal means being visible. This increase in followers, especially among individuals who are prone to crime and lack feelings of pity, compassion, conscience, and fairness, gives rise to the claim that it alone incites them to commit crimes.

## **“SUPPORTING CRIME CAUSES THE CRIMINAL TO BECOME A ROLE MODEL”**

Here, for individuals prone to crime, supporting this crime and having followers causes them to aspire to crime and choose the crime and the criminal as a role model.

For crime-prone individuals, whom we call Type B personalities, who lack empathy and do not accept social norms, being famous and followed has the effect of increasing criminals. Here, there is something that the algorithm, for example, does not see or overlooks. This young person does not ask if it's good or bad. They ask if it interests them, if it brings interaction.

## **“THE CONSEQUENCE OF CRIME SHOULD BE IMPRISONMENT, NOT DIGITAL FAME”**

In such situations, the measure of worth has changed. For example, it makes one think, 'If I can't be valuable, I should be feared.' 'If I can't be loved, I should be famous.' 'If I can't be visible in good deeds, let me be visible in evil.' That is, they see visibility and getting likes as a measure of worth. In other words, the reward for crime should actually be imprisonment, not digital fame. For individuals who are prone to crime, antisocial, and have psychopathic traits, this has the opposite effect. It causes them to gravitate towards this path. This characteristic exists in such individuals.

## **Can media turn a criminal into a role model?**

New media and digital media should focus on this issue here. A person becoming prominent with their name, photo, video, and personal records is called 'fame capital.' Here, that person is no longer just a murder suspect, but transforms into a digital character. That is, young girls begin to ask: What was their last post? What did their boyfriend write? How were they dressed? How many followers did they have? Are they handsome? This is called morbid curiosity, or pathological curiosity, with these questions. They ask with a pathological curiosity and unwittingly go to the center of the tragedy. We see that imitation also strengthens the search for fame in some way. For this reason, in such situations, media should normally be controlled to report the crime but not to sensationalize the criminal.

## **“PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSIBILITY REQUIRED IN VIOLENCE NEWS”**

The media must ethically pay attention to this when reporting such news. Indeed, the World Health Organization recommends the following as a scientific approach to suicide reporting: Do not detail the method. Do not sensationalize the event. Do not romanticize it. Report this news taking the risk of imitation into account. It has news value and needs to be reported, but it must be reported with these principles.

Therefore, in severe violence news, a public health approach and responsibility are required. In other words, we can say that reporting suicide news without detailing it is remarkable from the perspective of media ethics.

## **What might be behind young girls' interest in dark and dangerous figures? What psychological dynamics are at play?**

The combination of danger and excitement causes dopamine to be released in the brain. It provides immense pleasure. This is true for everyone. For example, let's consider how we get engrossed in horror movies when dopamine increases with danger and excitement. Similarly, gossip also causes dopamine to be released in the brain. Anger also causes dopamine to be released in the brain. That's why there's a false pleasure in them here.

Especially among the new generation, and most notably on TikTok, serious research is being conducted on criminal figures. In these studies, a group of people show narcissistic feedback by saying, “I would change him. If it were me, I wouldn't let that person kill me. I would change that person.”

That is, “If it were me, I wouldn't have made him so angry that he would kill me. I would influence him with my own power of persuasion,” thus entering into an illusion of “I can change him.” This is one of the mental distortions made by narcissistic individuals.

## **“THE STRONG MAN FALLACY IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL PHENOMENON”**

The strong man fallacy is also a notable misconception here. They mistake aggressive, violent men with psychopathic insensitivity for strong men. And with impulse control, they allow themselves to be beaten. 'The man hits me because he loves me,' they say. This is a psychological phenomenon known as the strong man fallacy. It causes young girls to make many mistakes.

On the one hand, there's the effect of moral desensitization here. That is, it glorifies physical attractiveness and relegates the crime to a secondary plane due to physical attractiveness. It highlights the person's physical attractiveness. It devalues, discredits the evil deeds of this person. This leads to moral desensitization. This is also considered an illusion that leads to moral desensitization, going hand in hand with the effect of physical attractiveness.

## **“YOUTHS' WEAKNESS IS EXPLOITED ON SOCIAL MEDIA”**

On the other hand, what is forbidden is usually considered attractive. That is, during adolescence and young adulthood, people are curious about what is forbidden. This risk is inherent in the human brain neurodevelopmentally for learning. Young people therefore love risk. They act without thinking of the consequences. They want to do whatever comes to mind. This weak side of young people is very effectively used on social media to bind them, to draw attention to oneself. And here, a person's danger plus handsomeness, fame, and being enigmatic, mysterious, creates a false charisma. This false charisma is a dark charisma. This dark charisma attracts the attention of young people, especially young girls. Let's say, since 10,000 people suddenly started following this person, and it increased 15-fold overnight, the situation we call algorithmic curiosity arises, suggesting there must be something interesting here.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/tgrt8-261010094437.png)

## **“CURIOSITY CAUSES DESENSITIZATION, NORMALIZING IT AFTER A WHILE”**

Regarding following to learn what's happening, it actually has an effect of increasing followings, even if people don't approve. For this reason, these factors should be considered in the background of young girls showing interest in dark and dangerous figures.

Furthermore, sympathizing with the killer behind the murdered young girl is seriously referred to in social psychology as moral desensitization, the loss of moral distance, and sensitivity related to morality. Curiosity causes desensitization. After a while, it normalizes.

## **“DOESN'T SEE AS A HUMAN, SEES AS AN OBJECT”**

That is, for these individuals, human tragedy seems to transform into a news item. They start seeing that person's death not as the death of a person, but merely as an event, news, comment, or follower count. We call this the objectification of the person. They don't see them as a human being. They see them as an object. A situation arises where this person is objectified, or objectified as a gender. That is, the real danger here is that while the perpetrator gains visibility, the victim becomes invisible.

The greatest danger is here. The victim becomes invisible. Invisible. Their suffering, being murdered, having a mother, a brother, an older sister, their hardships become invisible. The perpetrator becomes visible. The media runs the risk of creating such a distortion. This is a phenomenon of moral illusion referred to as moral decay, or the deactivation of morality.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/tgrt9-261010094504.png)

## **“SMART PEOPLE DO NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP OF CURIOSITY”**

Thousands of young girls following this is evaluated as a pathological mechanism, a pathological curiosity. However, this evaluation is actually about the human brain's curiosity towards what is dangerous, forbidden, and extraordinary. For example, a person being born with two arms and two legs does not arouse curiosity. But if a child is born with three arms and three legs, everyone is curious. These unusual things arouse curiosity. These are called morbid curiosities. This curiosity is one that consumes a lot of a person's time and energy. Smart people do not fall into this trap of curiosity. Therefore, this is a weakness of the human brain.

## **“HYBRISTOPHILIA IS NOT JUST SOMETHING FROM NOVELS”**

It makes these individuals ask, instead of 'handsome but a killer,' 'is he really as bad as they say, despite being handsome?' This marks the beginning of a moral illusion in that person. In some scientific literature, the phenomenon of feeling romantic and sexual attraction to individuals who have committed a crime is defined as hybristophilia for people involved in crime. It's not a very common phenomenon, but romanticizing crime and gaining sexual satisfaction through it, this is also not just something that exists in novels pathologically.

There are special cases related to this in the literature, but they are rare. It is not accurate to immediately conclude that viewers who increased 15-fold in one day are hybristophilic individuals who feel sexual interest or a sexual level towards crime. They feel sexual attraction, they romanticize. There is a sense of curiosity, a morbid curiosity.

To think that there are thousands of sick young girls here is very dangerous and objectionable.

## **So what should parents do in such a situation?**

This is the critical question here. We can explain the psychological dynamics behind it this way. In such situations, instead of judging the children, youngsters, and participants, these participants can suffer harm from this. They enter into moral desensitization. From there, they fall into various illusions, physical attractiveness illusions, and might choose this event as a role model. There is an effect known in literature as the Werther effect. Many suicide cases emerged in Germany, modeled after the suicide type in Goethe's novel "Werther," in the form of suicide by letter writing, as documented in literature.

## **“YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO BE TAUGHT EMPATHETIC PERSPECTIVE, MORAL REASONING, MORAL RATIONALITY”**

Therefore, just as there is an ethical rule for reporting suicide news, when families and media evaluate this event, instead of approaching by judging them, saying 'What kind of child are you, how can you think such things, do such things?' and accusing, judging, and examining, it is necessary to make them think. For example, one could say: Why did you follow this person? I wonder. What about it did you like? Is it curiosity? Is there something else? Which characteristics of this person attracted your attention? For example, were you curious, did you like it? Or are their friends following it? Did you learn about it from there? For example, think about the murdered young girl, she has a family, a mother, a father. What do they feel? You can do an empathy exercise by asking them to think about it from this perspective.

That is, asking young people, 'Does a young man being handsome change the bad outcome of this act?' and trying to get their answer. 'If something like this happened to your close friend, would you think the same way? If it happened to a friend you love, or your sibling, would you think that way? Would you say, "This boy was very handsome"?' By asking such questions, it is necessary to teach young people empathetic consequence thinking, consequence awareness, an empathetic perspective, moral reasoning, and moral rationality. If we don't teach this, our young people will approach this event with a false attractiveness and an illusion of visibility, with a feeling of admiration, which is a characteristic of adolescence where feelings dominate over reason.

They act driven by emotional reasoning rather than logical reasoning. This event is also an opportunity to teach them the balance between logic and emotion. In fact, ethically praising this crime also carries legal responsibility. It has a counterpart in the Turkish Penal Code. Publicly praising crime and the perpetrator is considered a crime against public order.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/tgrt11-261010094554.png)

## **“NOT SOCIAL MADNESS, BUT SOCIAL DESENSITIZATION”**

For this, there might be individuals who also resort to ways like profiting from crime in digital crime. Therefore, we should actually not view this event as a social madness. It's not social madness, but social desensitization. Perhaps the parents of most of the 15 times more viewers are unaware.

The lack of this awareness can also mean that those children have embarked on a dangerous adventure, a psychologically pathological journey. It can lead to social desensitization and empathy erosion in them. It can have a trivializing effect on violence. All of these are serious alarm signs.

A person becoming desensitized to such an event, that is, not seeing the bad side of the event and approving of that person's handsomeness, is a sign that a young girl has entered a very serious and dangerous path. Because today, the hierarchy of values has deteriorated. Being visible has become valuable as a measure of worth right now.

Visibility is good if it is done for good purposes, for beneficial purposes, for informing people. But if we see visibility merely as a measure of worth, if you say 'you are valuable if you are visible, you are valuable if you get likes, you are worthless if you don't get likes,' this means a person falls into the trap of fame.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/tgrt12-261010094614.png)

## **"FAME IS NOT VALUE, CHARACTER IS VALUE"**

It means that a person, while progressing up the ladder of fame, falls into various traps, pleasure traps, and comes under the influence of many criminal organizations. That is, if a person loses empathy, they become objectified, they become an item. Moral boundaries disappear. Moral judgments deteriorate. Then evil becomes normalized. We cause people to lose the meaning of events. A shift in meaning occurs. Fame replaces value. However, fame is not value; character is value.

If you teach fame as a value to a child, it also means that you are pushing your child down the precipices of social media. For this reason, the digital ecosystem is very important.

If family ties are warm, if there are visibly healthy relationships in the family, it becomes possible not to promote evil in such families. They can manage the feeling of curiosity correctly. Giving importance to this is very crucial for the moral health of society.

The moral health of society is measured not only by the punishment it imposes for crime but also by the social rewards it gives to the criminal. Therefore, let's not make the perpetrator an object of curiosity. To make the perpetrator a hero, a phenomenon, a romantic figure is to advertise evil. It is beneficial for mothers, fathers, and the media to pay attention to these issues.
