## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there are five negative emotions that a person especially needs to manage, which can also be referred to as the 'dark five.' He said, 'These emotions are resentment, hatred, anger, jealousy, and hostility. All of these are human emotions, but they need to be managed like a wild horse.' Tarhan noted that if emotions are managed, they will lead a person to their goals, warning, 'If we cannot manage them, the horse will take you in any direction it wants, causing you to make mistakes.'**

## **Our emotions also influence our decisions**

Tarhan, stating that a revolution occurred in psychological sciences towards the end of the 90s, said that with this revolution, emotions began to be treated as a scientific category, and used the following expressions: 'Previously, the topic of emotion was known as the domain of poets, artists, and individuals who valued spiritual matters, not as a scientific category. Because there was no evidence. In the 90s, evidence emerged. And it was a Portuguese-origin neuroscientist named Antonio Damasio who turned this evidence into written books and published them in America. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio wrote a book on this subject titled 'Descartes' Error.' Currently, emotions have also entered this concrete field.'

## **It is necessary to learn to manage emotions**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that when making decisions, a person should consider not only their logic but also their psychological and social needs, and said, 'It is necessary to learn to manage emotions. This is not learned innately. Within our emotions, there is both a benevolent part and a malevolent part... Both benevolent and malevolent emotions govern a person. We actually decide this. In fact, every minute is a choice, every decision is a choice; our lives progress this way through preferences. Therefore, emotions need to be managed. There are positive emotions, and there are negative emotions. Both need to be managed together. This is a skill, not a talent, and it is learned later. A person needs to invest in this topic. This is how it can be learned.'

## **The Dark Five must be managed**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there are five negative emotions that a person especially needs to manage, which can also be referred to as the five horsemen of the apocalypse or the dark five. He said, 'These emotions are resentment, hatred, anger, jealousy, and hostility. All of these are human emotions. We can feel these emotions when we encounter an undesired event or situation, when we are hindered, or when we are treated unfairly. Sometimes we feel jealousy, sometimes hatred, sometimes anger or resentment, and sometimes hostility. These emotions are like a wild horse. This wild horse needs to be managed. If we manage the wild horse, those emotions will lead us to our goals. If we cannot manage them, the horse will take you in any direction it wants, causing you to make mistakes. Therefore, these emotions need to be managed.' he advised.

## **Fight or flight response occurs in the brain**

Tarhan noted that these emotions emerge in the brain during moments of anger and stress, and said, 'As a result of these emotions, the brain gives a fight or flight response. If it gives a fight response, it commands the brain: 'There is a threat, there is danger.' When it gives a fight response, blood vessels constrict, vascular resistance increases, blood pressure rises, and gastrointestinal spasms occur. It postpones digestion, slowing it down by saying there is danger. Just as elements like entertainment are pushed to the background in a war situation. Similarly, the body sometimes suddenly gives a flight response. For example, it faints when it cannot fight against a threat... This is a situation related to the meaning a person attaches to emotions.'

## **Emotional education should also be in the family**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that a person can learn to educate their emotions within their family, and said, 'A person will experience these emotions since childhood. How do their mother and father react to these emotions? They will learn this from them. They will understand how to behave in a moment of anger or jealousy, and that these are very human emotions.'

## **If emotion management is learned, the parasympathetic system works**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that after learning emotion management, there will be changes in the physiological responses our body gives, and said, 'When we get angry, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Shoulder, neck, lower back, and back muscles contract. The body tenses, pupils dilate, and the amount of oxygen going to the brain increases. A person's attention increases. If this situation lasts a few hours, the body immediately tolerates it. In fact, sugar is immediately pumped into the blood. Blood sugar rises. These are done because the body needs energy. Within a few hours, the parasympathetic nervous system needs to activate. That is, it says, 'Danger has passed, relax and unwind.' If a person has positive emotions such as compassion, joy, happiness, peace, and hope, it means the parasympathetic nervous system is working.'

## **Chronic stress harms the brain**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that continuous stress harms the brain, and said, 'It reduces acid-like chemicals in the brain. There is no harm in a few hours, but if there is chronic stress continuously in the brain, if a person constantly feels threatened, if a person is constantly aggressive, damage begins in different organs. It is observed that people who die of heart attacks at a young age are always vigilant and anxious individuals.' he said.

## **Both positive and negative aspects of events should be perceived together**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that learning emotion management will begin with self-awareness, and said, 'A person must first be at peace with themselves. Then, there is not losing hope. They will perceive both the positive and negative aspects of events. After developing a problem-solving method in memory, they will progress by targeting the positive. In such situations, these are individuals who can manage stress.'

## **Jealousy and envy are different things**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the emotion of jealousy, like anger, can also be managed, and said, 'Jealousy is the emotion that causes people to make the most mistakes. A jealous person experiences mental blindness. They don't see their own mistakes. For example, there is jealousy, and there is envy. In jealousy, a person wishes to have what another person has. They set that as a goal. However, an envious person engages in non-peaceful jealousy by thinking, 'I have it, they have it too. They shouldn't have it.' They trip others up, disrupt the game, and sabotage their work. This situation is frequently encountered in workplaces.'

## **The emotion of jealousy is inherent in human nature**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the emotion of jealousy is very common in children who are usually raised by being compared during childhood, and said, 'Comparing a child to others makes them feel bad. One should avoid this when trying to motivate a child. It is necessary to motivate the child by setting a goal for them. Their self-confidence is broken when compared to others. The emotion of jealousy is inherent in human nature. A person who says 'I am not jealous' is lying.'

## **How do these emotions turn positive?**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that if a person can manage feelings of resentment, anger, hatred, jealousy, and hostility, these emotions turn into positive energy, and said, 'Therefore, let's not see these negative emotions as enemies. Let's just consider them as emotions that need to be managed. It benefits a person to focus on how to convert this negative energy into positive energy.'

## **Psychological capital should be aimed to be increased**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that producing positive emotions such as love and compassion is psychological capital, and said, 'What does a smart person do? They try to increase the positive emotions in their psychological capital. When those emotions increase, they dominate their personality. The parasympathetic nervous system becomes active. There are calm and collected individuals with whom you find peace. These individuals have developed the skill of using the parasympathetic nervous system more.'
