Tarhan answered Özgen's questions on the topic 'Is it possible to erase memory?' ## **“You confront memories, you redefine them”** Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, speaking about treatment methods according to the condition of diseases, said; 'We apply some treatment methods that can be understood as "erasing memory." One of them is Psychotherapy and Neurofeedback Reprogramming (changing wrong thought patterns). In other words, reprogramming the brain. This happens with psychotherapy. You confront memories, you redefine them. You assign a new meaning, you accept them, and you learn something from those memories. You re-analyze life events, fears. After that, according to the new situation, you re-take that information and send it from short-term memory to long-term memory. This happens with therapies. We bring the mind closer to its normal function. ## **Can the brain return to factory settings?** The second is a TMS-like resetting, a situation as if the brain returns to factory settings. Similar applications are made with magnetic stimulation treatments. People who repeat the same things find the intensity of repetition decreases after a while. Magnetic stimulation, with deep stimulation therapies, can enable the brain to achieve this. There is also ECT treatment, which we call ECT Rewiring (normalizing connections), meaning rebuilding corrupted pathways in the brain and re-establishing connections. This treatment becomes mandatory especially in OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), severe conditions like psychosis, when the person reaches the point of suicide, or when their psychological integrity is on the verge of collapsing. In this treatment, the person forgets the events they experienced. They reach a state of 'Where is this, where am I?' This treatment also needs to be supported with therapies…” he stated. ## **“We add the 'neurofeedback' method to classic psychotherapy”** Tarhan, stating that brain waves can be controlled by thought power, said; “In Reprogramming therapy, we add the neurofeedback method to classic psychotherapy. In this method, electrodes are placed on the person's head according to their illness. These illnesses can be post-traumatic stress disorder, aggression, or anxiety. First, we measure the beta and alpha waves in the brain. There is a module that will decrease the high wave and increase the low wave, and we apply it. We make people manage their brain waves with the power of thought.” ## **The brain's pathways turn into highways… ** Tarhan, stating that medication is necessary when therapies are insufficient, said; “Imagine a computer... If all information were in the short-term memory, that computer would slow down and couldn't do anything else. In treatment, we send that information from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. Now, that information comes when the person calls for it, it doesn't come involuntarily. The pathways in these people's brains, which were like footpaths, become like highways. They repeat the same thing with thought repetition. So, therapy alone is not enough. It can be remedied with medication, magnetic stimulation therapy, and electrical treatments. There are cases of suicide to forget the events experienced. They say, 'One cannot live with this.' Let's not be pessimistic; this situation has a solution…” he concluded.
