## Özet
Dumping Syndrome, which occurs when food and gastric fluids in the stomach move uncontrollably and excessively rapidly into the small intestine, negatively affects the person's quality of life.
## İçerik
In early Dumping Syndrome, which manifests with symptoms such as indigestion and diarrhea 10 to 30 minutes after eating, palpitation and low blood pressure can also develop. Experts state that 75% of Dumping Syndromes are of the early type. To control the symptoms associated with Dumping Syndrome, it is recommended to chew food thoroughly before swallowing, switch to a pattern of eating small amounts frequently at least five times instead of three main meals, and prioritize the consumption of protein-rich foods such as fish, chicken, peanuts, and legumes.
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay, General Surgery Specialist at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made evaluations regarding Dumping Syndrome.
**What is Dumping Syndrome?**
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay stated that Dumping Syndrome is a syndrome that occurs when hyperosmolar stomach contents (foods) suddenly pass into the small intestine. Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay said, “It occurs in 5-10% of surgeries involving the cutting of the stomach outlet and the removal of a portion of the stomach. This is because, in these surgeries, the gastric outlet region has either been deactivated or bypassed.”
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay noted that there are two types of Dumping Syndrome: early and late Dumping Syndrome.
**75% of Dumping Syndromes are of the early type**
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay noted that in early Dumping Syndrome, symptoms appear within 10 to 30 minutes following food intake. Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay said, “Due to the uncontrolled food content entering the small intestine, systemic symptoms such as palpitation and low blood pressure, caused by substances secreted by the intestines, develop in addition to symptoms like indigestion and diarrhea. 75% of Dumping Syndromes observed clinically are of the early type.”
**Low blood sugar occurs**
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay noted that late Dumping Syndrome is characterized by the appearance of certain symptoms 1 to 3 hours after meals. He said, “Unlike the early type, the main reason for the occurrence of the late type is the body's rapid insulin secretion in response to a sudden rise in blood sugar in the blood due to the content entering the small intestine. Due to the insulin response, patients experience symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). One out of every four patients with Dumping Syndrome has the late type of Dumping Syndrome.”
**Obesity surgeries are not the only cause**
Stating that “in Dumping Syndrome, food and gastric fluids in the stomach move uncontrollably and excessively rapidly into the small intestine,” Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay said, “The most common reason for this may be related to stomach operations. Although obesity surgeries are generally known as the culprit, any operation on the stomach or esophageal surgeries can also lead to it. Therefore, it cannot be said that Dumping Syndrome is caused only by obesity surgeries.”
**How is Dumping Syndrome treated?**
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay noted that lifestyle changes are primarily recommended in treatment, and in cases where such changes are insufficient, medical and surgical treatments are utilized.
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay stated that the following measures are effective in controlling symptoms related to Dumping Syndrome:
• Chewing foods thoroughly in the mouth before swallowing,
• Switching to a pattern of eating small amounts frequently at least five times instead of three main meals,
• Prioritizing the consumption of protein-rich foods such as fish, chicken, peanuts, and legumes,
• Consuming plenty of fibrous foods such as vegetables, grain products, and breakfast cereals.
• Avoiding foods high in carbohydrates like sugar, pastries, white bread, pasta, and carbonated drinks.
Specialist Dr. Talha Atalay added that in cases where complaints persist, medications that prolong gastric emptying time may be prescribed or additional food supplements may be used, and if drug therapy is unsuccessful, surgical treatments to slow gastric emptying may become an option.
