She said, “Thanks to innovative methods such as digital anesthesia systems, pain, needle phobia, and stress during injection can be significantly reduced. This makes it easier for children to adapt to treatment, and the clinical process progresses more controlled and comfortable for both the patient and the parents.” However, Dr. Lecturer Şen emphasized that digital anesthesia alone is not sufficient for the success of the application, stressing that it should be evaluated together with the clinician's clinical experience, the child's individual characteristics, and the family's approach. Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital provided information about the effects of new-generation dental approaches, especially used in children's dental treatments, on pain, needle phobia, and anxiety. **Dental experiences in childhood affect lifelong oral and dental health!** Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen stated that dental experiences acquired during childhood are one of the most important factors shaping an individual's attitude towards oral and dental health throughout their life. She said, “The root of dental fear observed in many individuals mostly lies in pain perception and injection anxiety.” Dr. Lecturer Şen pointed out that challenging treatments experienced at an early age, negative clinical experiences, and needle-related fears can pave the way for the development of dental phobia in later periods. For this reason, she stated that the main goal of current pediatric dental approaches is to increase compliance with lifelong oral and dental health practices by providing a pain-free, safe, and comfortable treatment environment for child patients. New generation dental approaches make it easier for children to adapt to treatment! Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen mentioned that the most significant source of anxiety in traditional dental treatments is the method of local anesthesia application and the pressure felt during the procedure. She said, “In classic syringe systems, more complex and difficult techniques may be needed, especially to ensure adequate anesthesia in the lower jaw region.” Dr. Lecturer Şen noted that this situation can cause numbness not only in the relevant tooth area but also in the lips, cheeks, and surrounding soft tissues for a long time, and added the following: “Consequently, involuntary lip or cheek bites, associated edema, swelling, and tissue trauma can be observed in child patients. Additionally, in traditional methods, manual pressure delivery of the anesthetic solution to the tissue can lead to pain and discomfort during the procedure. This situation, especially in child patients, can lead to the development of resistance to treatment and procedures being abandoned. With developing technology, more modern and patient-friendly applications have also come to the forefront in the field of pedodontics. Thanks to innovative methods such as digital anesthesia systems, pain, needle phobia, and stress during injection can be significantly reduced. This makes it easier for children to adapt to treatment, and the clinical process progresses more controlled and comfortable for both the patient and the parents. New-generation dental approaches allow children to establish a positive connection with the dentist, which significantly contributes to the upbringing of individuals who prioritize oral and dental health in later ages.” **Controlled administration of medication reduces pain!** Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen stated that digital anesthesia is a modern anesthesia method that allows the local anesthetic solution to be delivered into the tissue at a predetermined constant speed and pressure via a computer-controlled microprocessor. She said, “The computer-assisted system automatically adjusts the amount of anesthetic substance according to the patient's tissue resistance, delivering the medication slowly and controllably.” Dr. Lecturer Şen stated that this largely eliminates the feeling of pain and burning during the procedure, and most patients only feel a slight touch. She explained, “The digital anesthesia device usually has a pen-shaped, ergonomic, and illuminated design. This structure eliminates the appearance of the classic syringe needle that causes fear in child patients, increasing psychological compliance with treatment. It offers a more reassuring application, especially for children with dental phobia or needle phobia. A very thin and short needle is located at the tip of the device, which ensures that the sensation of injection is perceived minimally. Furthermore, the soft music emitted from the device during application distracts the child, contributing to a reduction in anxiety levels. When the pediatric dentist takes the child to the chair, they build trust by telling the child that they will 'touch their tooth with a magic pen' or 'make their tooth sleep.' Thus, the clinical environment is perceived as calmer, compliance with treatment increases, and the risk of developing dental fear in later periods significantly decreases.” **Digital anesthesia increases treatment comfort for children with needle phobia!** Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen stated that digital anesthesia can be applied in many dental procedures requiring local anesthesia, such as fillings, root canal treatments, and tooth extractions. She said, “However, it provides significant advantages especially in some patient groups. It is effective in rebuilding trust in children who have previously experienced negative experiences or have needle phobia. It facilitates the process by increasing treatment comfort in individuals with special needs where cooperation is limited. It is preferred in children with a high risk of lip and cheek biting, as it keeps numbness limited.” Referring to the main reasons why digital anesthesia is frequently preferred by parents and children, Dr. Lecturer Şen said, “Since there is no classic metal syringe appearance, the child may not realize that an injection is being given during the application. As the delivery of the anesthetic solution to the tissue occurs under computer control, the sensation of pressure, burning, and discomfort significantly decreases. Digital systems make it possible to numb only the area around the relevant tooth. Thus, the likelihood of long-lasting and uncomfortable numbness in the lips, tongue, and cheeks decreases. Thanks to more controlled numbness, the risk of tissue damage due to lip or cheek biting after treatment may decrease. Since the duration of anesthesia is generally short, the waiting time before treatment is shortened.” **Digital anesthesia alone is not enough!** Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen noted that digital anesthesia is not an alternative to general anesthesia. She said, “Digital anesthesia is a comfort-enhancing method used only in local anesthesia applications and requires the patient to show a certain level of compliance with the treatment process. General anesthesia, on the other hand, is an approach preferred for individuals where cooperation cannot be achieved, who have advanced fear and anxiety, who refuse to sit in the dental unit, or who have special needs.” Reiterating that digital anesthesia is an advanced technology that facilitates the treatment process, Dr. Lecturer Şen concluded her words with the following warning: “However, it is not sufficient on its own. The success of the application should be evaluated together with the clinician's clinical experience, the child's individual characteristics, and the family's approach. Therefore, instead of definitive statements to the child such as ‘it won't hurt at all’ or ‘no injection will be given,’ it is recommended to make more realistic and reassuring explanations such as ‘the teeth will be numbed’ or ‘you might feel a slight tickle.’” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66155](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66155) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/childrens-dental-fear-to-become-history*
