Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that goal setting is not merely a habit but a fundamental mechanism that supports psychological well-being, saying, “Clear goals facilitate decision-making processes; they reduce distraction, procrastination behaviors, and the feeling of loss of control.” Erol noted that the positive psychotherapy approach, by focusing on an individual's strengths and internal resources rather than deficiencies, makes goals more sustainable, and emphasized that the feeling of planning increases predictability, thereby reducing anxiety.

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi spoke about the impact of New Year's goals on psychological resilience, well-being, and mental regulation when based on strengths and planning through a positive psychotherapy approach.

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that entering a new year is a symbolic threshold that initiates a process of mental and emotional reconstruction for some individuals, adding, “From a psychological perspective, it is revealed that beginnings create a strong source of motivation for change and development in the human mind.”

In this context, Erol noted that setting goals in the new year is not a superficial habit but a fundamental mechanism that supports psychological well-being and regulates cognitive and emotional processes, and continued, “Goal setting allows individuals to channel their mental energy in a specific direction. The reduction in the perception of uncertainty enables the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions, to work more effectively. Clear goals facilitate decision-making processes; they reduce distraction, procrastination behaviors, and the feeling of loss of control.”

**Positive psychotherapy makes goals sustainable by basing them on strengths! **

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that planning prevents goals from remaining at an abstract level of intention, making it possible to translate them into behavioral reality, adding, “From a psychological perspective, making a plan strengthens an individual's feeling of being able to foresee the future and structure the process.”

As predictability increases, anxiety levels decrease; individuals begin to perceive difficulties they encounter not as threats but as manageable challenges.

Erol stated that the positive psychotherapy approach brings a different perspective to the goal-setting process, explaining, “This approach, instead of focusing on an individual's shortcomings, centers on their strengths, values, and internal resources. New Year's goals become more sustainable when structured not so much around the question ‘what should I fix?’ but rather ‘what do I want to develop and deepen in my life?’”

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol emphasized that another important element in positive psychotherapy is strengths-based planning, stating, “An individual's awareness of their personal resources increases self-confidence and reduces the fear of failure in the process of achieving goals. Goals should be regarded not merely as outcomes to be achieved, but as guiding elements that reflect an individual's identity and values.”

Emphasizing that consistent and realistic dreaming constitutes the emotional dimension of the goal-setting process, Erol concluded her remarks as follows:

“Structured dreams strengthen the feeling of hope and increase motivation. However, supporting these dreams with planning creates lasting psychological empowerment. 

Another point often overlooked in New Year's goals is the ability to strike a balance between life areas. For psychological robustness, it is important to understand the significance of rest, relationships, and satisfaction derived from life, as much as productivity. Consequently, setting goals in the new year is an important process that enables individuals to direct their lives, increase their psychological resilience, and sustain their well-being.”
