**The 10-week 'Remember Me' project, carried out in cooperation with Üsküdar Üniversitesi and Darülaceze Presidency with patients diagnosed with mild dementia, was completed with a program held at Darülaceze. Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan stated that humanity is only now learning about advanced old age, saying, “200 years ago, the average human lifespan was 40 years. In the future, this will reach 90s and 100s. We will discover new mental worlds, new diseases, and new wisdoms that we are encountering for the first time.”**

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the importance of sustainability, noting that it is very beneficial to continue most of the information learned and exercises performed within the scope of the project even after its completion. ## **Lecturer Doğan: “It had positive contributions to both patients and caregivers”**

Lecturer İdil Arasan Doğan stated that the ‘Remember Me’ project is a social responsibility project and that reminiscence therapy and cognitive stimulation group therapies were applied in the 10-week project. Doğan said, “We have also implemented our psychoeducation program for caregivers.” and added that while this project had a positive outcome affecting the well-being of elderly patients, it also had positive contributions for caregivers and employees.
Doğan stated, “This project is one of the exemplary projects that can be presented as a psychosocial, accessible, and innovative advanced age model and can be applied to our elderly individuals with dementia. We want to be at Darülaceze again in a short time to implement a TÜBİTAK project.”

## **Assist. Prof. Gümüş: “An increasing elderly population in a country shifts many dynamics”**

Project coordinator Üsküdar Üniversitesi Assist. Prof. Zeynep Gümüş Demir provided the following information about the ‘Remember Me’ project in her speech:
“Today, we are happy to complete the ‘Remember Me’ project. I believe that every research and every project conducted with elderly individuals is extremely valuable. Because the elderly population is gradually increasing worldwide. Health authorities, especially WHO, have on their agenda the development of new projects and initiatives for the elderly population. An increasing elderly population in a country shifts many dynamics. Many innovations need to be implemented in terms of socioeconomic, political, and health policies. With this project, we wanted to take a step in the relevant field, contribute, and draw attention to this issue within society. I thank everyone who contributed, and my biggest thanks go to the residents of Darülaceze, who are the main protagonists of the project.”

## **Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “Projects we conduct by touching life are a great scientific gain for us”**

Speaking within the program, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, expressed her happiness to be at Darülaceze, stating, “I feel at home, in my nest. Darülaceze is everyone’s door, in fact; we all have periods when we are helpless and weak. Even if we don't go, knowing that there is a door that can be opened for us at any moment provides a very important sense of security.”

Arıboğan stated that as an academician, she believes universities gain significant benefits from such projects, saying, “Otherwise, professors at the university would only be trying to understand and define the world through books they read behind their own doors and walls. The projects we carry out here by touching life are also a great scientific gain for us.”

## **Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “As average lifespan extends, we will discover new mental worlds”**

Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan also noted that humanity is only now learning about advanced old age, stating the following:
“200 years ago, the average human lifespan was 40 years, and we were very pleased when it rose to 50 years at the beginning of the 20th century. In 2015, the average human lifespan reached 75 years worldwide, including Africa. In countries like ours, the average age of 80 and over began to be seen, and this will reach 90s and 100s. When this happens, we will discover new lives, new mental worlds, new diseases, new gains, and new wisdoms that we are encountering for the first time. We are also learning and processing this information to contribute to society for new generations. Although this is a project closing meeting, it will hopefully also be the opening of new projects.”

## **Hamza Cebeci: “It’s not the stone buildings that make Darülaceze valuable” **

Speaking at the meeting, Presidential Advisor and Darülaceze President Hamza Cebeci said, “Darülaceze is not just lucky to have carried out a project with Üsküdar Üniversitesi; our young people studying at Üsküdar Üniversitesi are luckier than all of us. Both our esteemed Professor Dr. Nevzat Tarhan and Professor Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan are two valuable professors known and recognized not only in Turkey but internationally.”

Cebeci emphasized that the task of making Darülaceze a vibrant, dynamic, and internationally respected place is the work of its employees, volunteers, and stakeholders. He stated, “Otherwise, it is not the stone buildings here that make this place valuable. The service approach, the perspective on people, and the philosophy here place Darülaceze in a different position, both in Turkey and globally.”
Cebeci also reminded that the Darülaceze Social Living City project received an international award in England, adding, “We are engaged in an activity, a service that will be an example to the world. The inauguration of our new social living city has taken place. Registrations will be accepted starting from the New Year, and hopefully, it will begin providing services by the end of May.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “The system applied is better than solving puzzles”**

Speaking at the closing program of the ‘Remember Me’ project, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar Üniversitesi and Psychiatrist, emphasized that works done with heartfelt love have a stronger impact. Tarhan said, “These types of projects require volunteerism and dedication. Even if individuals have theoretical knowledge about the project, when they add their emotions, those projects find a significant response. Because ‘Remember Me’ is a project where emotion is added to theory. Therefore, its energy and reflection are different. It finds a serious response.”

Tarhan stated that through the project, residents of Darülaceze diagnosed with mild dementia were reminded of information such as a song or a proverb they had half-forgotten. He said, “Repeating in this way is a system that exercises long-term memory, short-term memory, and working memory, known as cognitive therapy. It’s better than solving puzzles. If you stimulate your brain, it creates new pathways, and you live longer.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “It is important that our brain does not age before our body”**

Tarhan emphasized the importance of sustainability, noting that it is very beneficial to continue most of the information learned and exercises performed within the scope of the project even after its completion, and stated:
“Human life is in the destiny of Allah, but being able to live that period of time qualitatively is important. Currently, it is called healthy aging. It is more important whether our brain ages before our body. If our brain is vigorous, our body also becomes vigorous. The brain weighs 2% of our body, but it uses 25% of the oxygen and glucose entering the body. To keep the brain alive, a brain-friendly lifestyle is needed. The brain is like a well. Just as a well opens up as you draw water from it, the brain also opens up as it works. Therefore, after reading something, it is necessary to comment on it rather than just repeating it.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Socialization keeps the brain young”**

Tarhan stated that the average age is higher for women, not only in Turkey but globally, and said, “The reason for this is their high level of sharing. They constantly converse to eliminate loneliness and share, becoming more social. Socialization also keeps the brain vigorous. In this way, it is possible to age qualitatively by living life to the fullest.”

## **Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Projects like the ones we do here are like mental whips…”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also stated that the concept of super aging has recently come to the agenda, saying, “For example, a person turns 100 and is still vigorous. Because they live correctly, their sleeping and waking times are set. They constantly read, work their mind, and keep it alive. Therefore, projects like the ones we do here are like mental whips. Being able to continue these is very important.”

Tarhan noted that Darülaceze has been doing significant work in recent years, saying, “I thank our President Hamza for this. He is someone whose heart is here. This kind of leadership elevates all institutions.”
Tarhan recalled the words of Prophet Muhammad, ‘If it were not for your elderly, calamities would come upon you like a flood,’ and noted that this means the prayers of elderly people are very accepted and valuable. He concluded his words by asking the residents of Darülaceze to pray for Gaza.
Following the speeches, certificates were presented to the Darülaceze residents involved in the project by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, and Darülaceze President Hamza Cebeci.
