She stated, “Furthermore, since other health problems are often prioritized in these individuals, oral and dental health can be neglected. All these factors place individuals with special needs in a high-risk group in terms of dental health.” Asst. Prof. Altop added that oral health can be protected with regular dentist check-ups and proper nutrition, and when necessary, treatments can be completed in a single session under general anesthesia to minimize psychological impact. Prof. Seda Altop stated that individuals with special needs are defined as those who require more specific and different approaches in dental treatments due to physical, mental, or certain systemic diseases. She said, “In this patient group, the treatment process is entirely personalized, unlike standard practices.” Emphasizing that the individual's needs are taken into account at every stage of the process, Asst. Prof. Altop stated, “When deemed necessary, treatments can be performed under general anesthesia or sedation.” **Individuals with special needs are in a high-risk group for dental health!** Asst. Prof. Seda Altop stated that oral and dental health in individuals with special needs can be adversely affected for various reasons, saying, “Increases or decreases in saliva flow rate, impairments in hand-eye coordination, inadequate nutrition, musculoskeletal insufficiencies, and certain mental limitations can make oral care difficult.” Asst. Prof. Altop also noted that sensitivities in oral tissues can further complicate this process, stating: “Furthermore, since other health problems are often prioritized in these individuals, oral and dental health can be neglected. All these factors place individuals with special needs in a high-risk group in terms of dental health.” **Preventive measures should not be neglected!** Asst. Prof. Seda Altop emphasized that regular dentist check-ups are of great importance for maintaining oral and dental health, stating, “A suitable nutrition plan should be created for the individual in line with the physician's recommendations; acidic, sugary, and high-carbohydrate foods should be avoided as much as possible.” Underlining that oral hygiene should be maintained at an optimum level, Asst. Prof. Altop explained, “At this point, supportive equipment such as oral showers and, if needed, electric toothbrushes can be utilized. Preventive measures should not be neglected; in necessary cases, the treatment process can be completed under general anesthesia in a single session, minimizing the individual's psychological impact.” **Thanks to general anesthesia, treatments can be completed in a single, controlled session!** Providing information about dental treatments performed under general anesthesia, Asst. Prof. Seda Altop concluded her words as follows: “General anesthesia can be safely applied to individuals with conditions such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, mental or physical disability, psychiatric disorders, and dental phobia.
