## Özet

Experts state that social media offers individuals the opportunity to express their feelings and provide short-term relief in the face of social crises, but they say that a permanent ethical stance does not form when online reactions do not turn into real responsibility and action.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that symbolic actions on social media provide short-term relief to individuals, saying, “The feeling of being sensitive temporarily reduces internal tension, but this relief does not turn into a permanent ethical stance if it does not find a behavioral equivalent in daily life.” Erol emphasized that children and young people, in particular, can confuse sensitivity on social media with real responsibility, highlighting that true conscience and ethical behavior are reinforced by small but consistent daily responsibilities.

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the impact of digital conscience and empathy concepts, when limited to reactions shown on social media, on an individual's ethical and responsibility awareness.

**Individuals are caught between responsibility and helplessness, realizing their ineffectiveness**

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that in recent years, individuals have been intensely exposed to emotional stimuli in the face of social violence, disasters, wars, and various crises. She said, “The desire to speak out, take a stance, and not remain indifferent to such events can be evaluated as an understandable and functional psychological reaction.”
Erol added that individuals are often aware that they do not have a direct sphere of influence over these events. “This situation leads to the simultaneous feeling of moral responsibility and helplessness. Clinically, this tension area can be explained by the individual's desire to take an ethical position and their need to protect themselves from psychological and social risks. In this context, social media functions as an area where individuals can make their voices heard, develop a sense of belonging, and is perceived as relatively safer.”

**Digital conscience does not turn into a permanent ethical stance if not supported by action!**

Defining digital conscience as ‘an individual's effort to regulate emotions such as anger, anxiety, and helplessness that arise when confronted with social events, through online symbolic reactions instead of behaviors requiring real-life action and continuity,’ Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol said, “When individuals express their reactions on social media, the discomfort felt in the face of events is brought to a manageable point in their inner world.”

Erol pointed out that this situation is often a desire to make the internal discomfort created by contact with conscience more bearable, and stated:

“Symbolic actions on social media provide short-term relief to the individual. The feeling of being sensitive temporarily reduces internal tension, but this relief does not turn into a permanent ethical stance if it does not find a behavioral equivalent in daily life. Clinical observations show that at this point, conscience can be used more as an emotion regulation tool than as a guiding function. The individual feels relieved, but responsibility is often postponed.”

Empathy not translated into action is not sustainable in the long run!

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol noted that empathy is often experienced in the digital environment disconnected from action, stating, “However, psychologically, empathy is not merely about feeling; it involves contact, reciprocity, and a certain degree of responsibility.”
Erol emphasized that continuous exposure to crisis and violence content can lead to emotional fatigue in individuals after a while, adding, “At this point, a person either withdraws or struggles to maintain their sensitivity. Empathy not translated into action is not sustainable in the long run.”

**Online reactions are the beginning, while action and responsibility are the continuation! **

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol noted that the increased visibility of digital conscience during times of social crisis is closely related to the helplessness individuals experience in the face of events they cannot control. She said, “Social media offers a quick sharing and outlet for these emotions. However, this area does not always turn into a ground where responsibility deepens. Measuring conscience by social approval can cause ethical sensitivity to move away from being an internal compass.”

Emphasizing that this situation should be handled carefully, especially for children and young people, Erol concluded her words as follows:

“Individuals whose moral reasoning skills are still in the process of maturation developmentally may confuse showing sensitivity on social media with real responsibility. The perception that a share is sufficient can lead to a weakening of the bond between action and outcome.

It is possible for digital conscience to transform into real conscience. For this, online reactions should be seen not as an end, but as a beginning. Empathy gains meaning when supported by concrete behaviors, relational contact, and continuous responsibilities. The digital sphere can be a part of this process, but true conscience is always shaped by small but consistent responsibilities taken in daily life.”
