## Özet
Cold weather does not cause a herniated disc but can increase the pain.
## İçerik
Experts note that cold weather does not cause the formation of a herniated disc, but it is one of the factors that cause back pain. Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal, pointing out the importance for someone who frequently experiences back pain to wear clothes that keep their back warm, especially in cold weather, said, “The first thing to do for back pain is to apply heat to the back area and rest.”
Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal explained the effects of cold and snowy weather on lumbar and cervical hernias.
Cold weather is a factor causing back pain
Explaining that a herniated disc occurs when the cartilaginous tissues called “discs” located between the spinal bones deteriorate over time and protrude from their place, Op. Dr. Emre Ünal said, “This deterioration occurs due to factors such as aging, heavy lifting, smoking, and being overweight. Cold weather is not one of the factors causing the formation of a herniated disc, but it is a factor that causes back pain. As we can understand from this, a herniated disc and back pain are different conditions.”
'Tension' in the muscles, joints, and connective tissues in the back area causes pain
Stating that tissues “contract” and stiffen in cold weather, Op. Dr. Emre Ünal said, “These tissues include muscles, joints, and connective tissues. Mobility decreases. Since blood-carrying vessels also constrict, less blood goes to the tissues. Due to all these reasons, 'tension' occurs in the muscles, joints, and connective tissues in the back area. This tension results in pain.”
Pain associated with herniated disc becomes more severe in cold weather
Stating that people suffering from herniated disc problems experience hip and leg pain more than back pain, Op. Dr. Emre Ünal said, “While cold weather does not contribute to the development of a herniated disc, we observe in our polyclinics that the pain associated with a herniated disc becomes more severe in cold weather.”
What should be done in cold weather?
Op. Dr. Emre Ünal explained what those with back pain complaints should do in cold weather as follows:
“For someone who frequently experiences back pain, wearing clothes that keep the back area warm, especially in cold weather, is the most important factor in protection from the cold. For people who want to exercise outdoors, doing warm-up exercises before exercising will significantly prevent back pain.”
Apply heat with any hot water bottle for at least 15 minutes
A confusing question for people who develop back pain is, ‘Should I apply heat or cold when my back hurts?’ The first thing to do for back pain is to apply heat to the back area and rest. Applying heat to the back area with any hot water bottle that will warm the skin without burning it and maintain its temperature for at least 15 minutes yields very good results along with rest.”
Do not smoke to protect against back pain!
Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal also listed the requirements to protect against back pain or herniated disc as follows:
“Regular exercise, paying attention to weight, avoiding sugary foods, not smoking, and protecting the back area from cold.”
