He stated, “The responsibilities brought by early marriage lead to a decrease in girls’ self-esteem, making them feel inadequate, worthless, and depressed.” Emphasizing that suicide attempts can be seen in some cases, Dr. Bingöl conveyed that the education level of families and social awareness play a critical role in preventing this problem. Psychiatrist Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about the causes, consequences, and proposed solutions for preventing child marriages. **Child marriages are a widespread problem in developing countries!** Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl stated that child marriages are unions carried out before children are physically and psychologically ready to bear the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. He added, “Child marriages, which are quite common in developing countries, continue to exist as a significant problem in our country as well.” Dr. Bingöl highlighted that according to research, one out of every five girls worldwide is married. He said, “According to UNICEF 2022 data, the number of married girls is approximately 6-7 times higher than that of married boys. According to UNICEF’s 2021 data, Turkey ranks 87th among 202 countries worldwide in terms of the rate of children married before the age of 18. The statistics show that although there has been a slight increase in awareness on this issue compared to previous years, it is not yet sufficient, and the problems in this regard still persist.” **Girls married at an early age can attempt suicide!** Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl emphasized that child and forced marriages are an issue that needs to be addressed with sensitivity. He stated, “Especially in regions where traditional practices guide socio-cultural life, children can be forcibly married by their families. Children who are married before they can even experience their childhood and who face parental responsibilities are psychologically worn down.” Dr. Bingöl continued, stating that girls are typically the ones subjected to child marriages: “Being married to an older man at a young age, being isolated from their peers by taking on household responsibilities, being deprived of education, being forced into sexual relations, and the difficulties brought by the process of childbirth and raising children, all lead these girls to experience various psychological problems throughout their lives. All these responsibilities brought by early marriage lead to a decrease in girls’ self-esteem, making them feel inadequate, worthless, and depressed. It has been observed that 29 percent of girls married at an early age have suicidal thoughts, and 21 percent have attempted suicide. Unfortunately, girls who escape from their husbands and seek refuge with their original families or insist on divorce are either sent back to their husbands, punished by their families, or, even more tragically, their lives are taken in the name of ‘honor, tradition’ killings.” **Many reasons can lead to early age marriages! ** Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl noted that it is known that families have many cultural, social, and economic reasons for marrying off their children at an early age. He said, “In some families, girls can be seen as an economic burden, and their families may want to gain economic benefits by marrying off their daughters under the name of 'başlık parası' (bride price).” Dr. Bingöl added that attempts are made to legitimize the marriages of minors within the framework of some religious sources. He explained, “Additionally, a child who is subjected to violence within the family seeing marriage as a way out, and children who are abused or raped being forcibly married against their will are among the frequently observed reasons.
