Experts say that early detection of hearing loss in children is of great importance for language and speech development.

## İçerik

Stating that hearing screenings conducted from the newborn period enable early detection of hearing loss, Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist Asst. Prof. K. Ali Rahimi said, “Children must undergo hearing screening before starting school. Parents and teachers should also pay attention to certain behavioral changes.” Asst. Prof. Rahimi pointed out that early intervention ensures faster results in language development and emphasized that speech therapy is an important part of the process after cochlear implantation.

Asst. Prof. K. Ali Rahimi, Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made statements regarding the early diagnosis of hearing loss in children, the impact of hearing loss on language and speech development and school success, and the importance of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and speech therapy in early intervention, within the scope of September 21-27 World Deaf Day.

**Early Diagnosis and Intervention are Crucial in Hearing Loss!**

Highlighting the importance of early detection of hearing loss, Asst. Prof. K. Ali Rahimi said, “As soon as babies are born, a screening test called BERA is performed on all children through an application organized by the Ministry of Health. Thus, we can detect hearing loss from birth.” he said.

Asst. Prof.  Rahimi also stated that this should be supported with hearing tests in school age.

**Speech is a Continuation of Hearing!**

Stating that every child can speak when they hear, Asst. Prof. Rahimi expressed that speech is a continuation of hearing.

“If a child doesn't hear, they cannot speak,” said Asst. Prof. Rahimi, adding:

“Furthermore, if they have some hearing but don't hear certain frequencies, they cannot produce the sounds of those frequencies. We call air vibration hearing. The brain perceives this and evaluates it as hearing. After hearing information is gathered at the back of the brain, it is evaluated, commands are given to the language centers, and it is conveyed back to us as speech. Thus, a child can repeat every sound they hear. If the family speaks Chinese, the child can produce Chinese sounds; if English, English; if Turkish, Turkish sounds.”

**Hearing is an Important Criterion in School Success!**

Emphasizing that hearing is one of the most important criteria for school success, Asst. Prof. Rahimi said, “Hearing loss can develop in children due to many reasons. In addition to congenital hearing loss, hearing loss can also occur later due to jaundice, high fever, and certain medications, especially antibiotics used in childhood.”

Pointing out that children must undergo hearing screening before starting school, Asst. Prof. Rahimi said, “Parents and teachers should also pay attention to certain behavioral changes. If a child does not hear, there are very simple ways to detect this. For example, it can be said, ‘The child sits too close to the television, or turns up the TV volume too much.’ In school, the teacher might move the child to the front rows. Because if they don’t hear at the back, they might start misbehaving, and the teacher might pull them forward.”

**Hearing Loss Can Be Detected at Any Age!**

Noting that different hearing tests can be applied depending on the child's age and their response to the test, Asst. Prof. Rahimi said, “If the child responds to the hearing test, both objective and subjective hearing tests, we perform a hearing test. It is a very easy and fun test. We give sounds and measure pure tones, i.e., frequencies.”

However, Asst. Prof. Rahimi mentioned that for younger children who are unable to respond to play audiometry, a test called BERA is applied. “We call this an objective hearing test. We give a sound to the child and record it from the brain with EEG. This way, we can detect whether a child has hearing loss at any age.”

**Technology Offers Significant Opportunities in Hearing Loss!**

Providing information that different treatment methods can be applied depending on the type of hearing loss, Asst. Prof. Rahimi said, “If it is conductive hearing loss, and the child is around 4 years old with fluid in the middle ear, we insert a tube. However, if there is sensorineural and severe hearing loss, we can still enable the child to hear with a cochlear implant. Technology has advanced significantly. As long as we don't delay. Because the earlier we start enabling hearing for language development, the faster we can get results.”

**Speech Therapy, a Continuation of the Cochlear Implant!**

Emphasizing that it is also important for children with cochlear implants to make sense of the sounds they hear, Asst. Prof. K. Ali Rahimi completed his words by drawing attention to the importance of speech therapy in this process:

“Let's say we've performed the cochlear implant, and the child has started hearing. However, every sound they hear needs to be understood. For example, we repeatedly teach what yellow is. When they hear the word yellow, we teach them that it corresponds to that color, and the word milk refers to that liquid substance. We call these speech therapies. Speech therapy is a continuation of the cochlear implant.

No child should remain helpless due to hearing loss anymore. If they don't hear sound in the ear, we can provide sound to the inner ear. If they don't hear sound in the inner ear either, we can transmit that sound directly to the brainstem. Technology must be utilized. No child has to be hearing impaired anymore.”
