## Özet

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini, stating that Alzheimer's does not only manifest itself with forgetfulness, said that the disease can give various signals even before memory loss begins.

## İçerik

Within the scope of September 21 World Alzheimer's Day, Dr. Celal Şalçini, providing information about the early signs of Alzheimer's, said, 'Withdrawal, loss of interest, changes in personality and mood, and difficulty with daily tasks can be among the early symptoms.' Dr. Şalçini, stating that these signs can be confused with fatigue or stress, emphasized that forgetfulness is not a natural result of aging, and forgetfulness and behavioral changes affecting daily life should be medically evaluated.

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini of Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the early symptoms of Alzheimer's that can appear before memory loss, its difference from normal age-related forgetfulness, and the importance of the patient's inability to recognize their cognitive losses.

Alzheimer gives insidious signals much earlier than memory loss begins!

Dr. Celal Şalçini, reminding that September is recognized as Alzheimer's Awareness Month worldwide and September 21 is World Alzheimer's Day, said, 'Alzheimer's, generally known in society as merely a 'forgetfulness' disease, actually gives insidious signals much earlier than memory loss begins.'

Dr. Şalçini emphasized that in this disease, where early diagnosis is crucial, correctly interpreting overlooked early signs plays a critical role.

Changes in personality and mood are among the first symptoms!

Although memory loss is the first thing that comes to mind when Alzheimer's is mentioned, Dr. Şalçini reiterated that the disease often begins with different symptoms and said, 'Families often dismiss these early signs, attributing them to fatigue or stress.'

Dr. Şalçini explained these signs as follows:

'Withdrawal and loss of interest; the person suddenly abandoning hobbies they have enjoyed for years, avoiding crowds, or becoming quiet in social settings. Changes in personality and mood; someone who was previously calm and compliant becoming unreasonably suspicious, sensitive, fearful, or easily angered. Difficulty with complex tasks; struggling with daily tasks that require planning, such as calculating change, banking transactions, or recalling recipes for meals prepared for years. Difficulty finding words; frequently pausing while speaking, unable to recall names of objects and using vague words like 'this, that' instead.'

**Forgetfulness is not a natural consequence of aging and requires medical examination!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini, pointing out that the deeply rooted belief in society that 'everyone forgets as they age' delays patients from undergoing a neurological evaluation for years, said, 'This misconception prevents action from being taken in the early stages of the disease, that critical period when brain cells can still be largely preserved and medical interventions are most effective.'

Dr. Şalçini, underlining that forgetfulness or behavioral changes are not a natural consequence of aging, stated that these always require a medical examination.

**The difference between Alzheimer's and forgetfulness emerges in its impact on daily life!**

Dr. Şalçini, noting that everyone can sometimes forget things in the hustle and bustle of daily life, said, 'However, the difference between the disease and natural forgetfulness lies in how much it disrupts daily life. In normal forgetfulness, you forget where you put your keys but find them by retracing your steps in your mind. You might be stuck on a name at that moment, but it comes to mind when you go to bed at night. In Alzheimer's forgetfulness, however, you might forget not only where the key is but also what the key is for. You ask the same question repeatedly within five minutes and don't remember having asked it before or having that conversation.'

**The patient denying their condition can be one of the critical symptoms of Alzheimer's!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini noted that the patient unequivocally denying cognitive losses that their relatives clearly perceive is also one of the most critical symptoms of Alzheimer's and concluded his words as follows:

'This condition, known in medicine as 'anosognosia,' does not stem from the patient's stubbornness, unwillingness to admit their mistakes, or lying. Because the disease also affects the brain's awareness center, the person genuinely cannot perceive that they have forgotten or changed. At this stage, instead of arguing with the patient by saying 'how can you not remember,' seeking professional support with a compassionate approach is the most correct step.'
