## Özet
Experts state that some eating problems observed in children can arise due to sensory sensitivities, citing issues such as eating very little or excessively, selective eating, inability to eat lumpy foods, rejecting different tastes, not chewing, and not keeping food in the mouth for a long time.
## İçerik
Specialist Occupational Therapist Cahit Burak Çebi, reminding that selective eating behavior in children is a particularly alarming situation for parents, said, “Parents should consider that the rejection of different tastes in children may stem from limitations in sensory development.” Cahit Burak Çebi emphasized that parents of children in this situation should set an example for their children in terms of eating routines, and stated that with occupational therapy, children's sensory profiles and eating habits are evaluated, and plans are made to improve children's eating skills.
Specialist Occupational Therapist Cahit Burak Çebi from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Feneryolu Tıp Merkezi spoke about the impact of occupational therapy on eating behavior problems in children, on the occasion of World Occupational Therapy Day on October 27.
Sensory sensitivities can affect eating behavior in children
Specialist Occupational Therapist Cahit Burak Çebi stated that some eating problems observed in children can be listed as eating very little or excessively, selective eating, inability to eat lumpy foods, rejecting different tastes, not chewing, and not keeping food in the mouth for a long time, and added, “Selective eating, inability to eat lumpy food, not chewing, or food refusal can arise due to sensory sensitivities.”
Cahit Burak Çebi pointed out that the sensory developmental stages affecting eating behavior include taste, smell, touch, sight, proprioceptive, and interoceptive senses, which manage hunger and satiety signals. He explained, “Children who are sensitive to taste and touch react to the texture, hardness, temperature of food, sharp tastes, and heavily spiced foods. Children sensitive to smell may reject food by reacting directly to its scent without even experiencing it. Due to sensitivities in the visual system, they may show aversion to the appearance of food, prefer foods of the same color, react negatively to different foods being mixed, and exhibit selective eating behavior. Furthermore, in children with a lower-than-normal sensory threshold in the proprioceptive and interoceptive systems, sensitivity to satiety signals and, consequently, food refusal behavior may be encountered.”
Parents should be patient and set an example…
Cahit Burak Çebi, reminding that selective eating behavior in children is a particularly alarming situation for parents, said, “At this point, parents should consider that the rejection of different tastes in children may stem from limitations in sensory development.”
Emphasizing that parents need to be patient during this process, Cahit Burak Çebi listed his recommendations for parents as follows:
“Parents should follow the child's wishes and set an example for children in terms of eating routines. Parents eating the foods the child needs to eat, alongside the child, in a suitable table setting will make it easier for the child to experience different tastes. Furthermore, offering children different options during meals, allowing them to choose their food, and enabling them to experience different tastes in a suitable table setting with the family, away from screens, will support the process.”
Plans are being made to develop children's eating skills with occupational therapy
Specialist Occupational Therapist Cahit Burak Çebi concluded his words by stating that occupational therapists evaluate children's sensory profiles and eating habits and make plans to improve children's eating skills:
“Occupational therapists apply various methods to overcome eating-related sensory difficulties in a way that is appropriate for the child's sensory profile, using a sensory integration approach. For example, they try to enrich the child's sensory development by allowing them to experience different textures, tastes, smells, and lumpy foods. Furthermore, in occupational therapy, with a sensory integration and feeding approach, the child's table setting and eating routine are prepared, an environment where they will feel comfortable is planned, and an appropriate nutrition routine is created for the child.”
