## Özet

Experts state that while shopping can provide short-term pleasure and relief, when it becomes uncontrolled, it can lead to psychological, social, and financial problems.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop, noting that repetitive purchasing behavior despite no need can indicate shopping addiction, said, “Research shows that shopping addiction usually does not occur alone and can frequently be associated with other psychological disorders.” Aytop pointed out that shopping addiction typically emerges in late adolescence and early 20s, stating that recording feelings and thoughts before, during, and after shopping can help identify the factors triggering the behavior.

Clinical Psychologist Emine Akın Aytop from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the symptoms, emergence, and related psychological problems of shopping addiction.

**Purchasing behavior without need can turn into shopping addiction!**

Emine Akın Aytop reminded that addiction is a disease that develops over a specific process, with biological, psychological, and social dimensions, and said, “It is characterized by an individual persistently continuing to use an object or perform a behavior (action) despite negative consequences, losing control, and experiencing various withdrawal symptoms when separated from this object or action.”

Aytop stated that although shopping may seem like a daily necessity and a harmless activity, purchasing behavior driven by instant desires and feelings of pleasure, even when there is no need, is considered a form of addiction. She continued, “Shopping addiction was first defined centuries ago, and this condition was named ‘oniomania.’ Research shows that shopping addiction usually does not occur alone and can frequently be associated with other psychological disorders.”

**Many psychological disorders can be associated with uncontrolled shopping behavior! **

Aytop, mentioning psychological disorders that can be associated with shopping addiction, said the following:

“Depression is one of the most frequently associated disorders. Depression can lead to the emergence or persistence of various addictions, such as shopping addiction. On the other hand, shopping addiction can increase depression-related risks through psychological, social, or financial difficulties. As seen in impulse control disorders, individuals with shopping addiction also experience difficulty controlling their impulses.

Anxiety disorders, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and a predisposition to other types of addictions can also facilitate uncontrolled shopping behavior.”

**While shopping addiction provides short-term pleasure, it can lead to regret and guilt!**

Aytop stated that enjoying shopping occasionally is a common situation, and said, “Normal shopping is an activity typically associated with positive or neutral emotions, carried out by individuals to meet their basic needs or to make planned and controlled expenditures. In such shopping, the person has control over budget and spending frequency, and regret after purchasing is rarely seen.”

In contrast, Aytop pointed out that shopping addiction emerges independently of need and in an unplanned manner, explaining, “Individuals who shop in this way may not be noticed at first because they usually hide their spending habits from their loved ones. Furthermore, even if they incur debt for shopping, they might present themselves as wealthy. Shopping, both on physical and online platforms, can take precedence over hobbies or social activities. They are generally anxious and tense, and if someone questions their purchases, they become defensive and irritable. Although shopping may create short-term pleasure or relief, due to the financial and moral problems it causes, it can lead to feelings of regret and guilt; negatively affecting self-perception, self-worth, and self-esteem.”

**Shopping addiction typically emerges in the early 20s!**

Emine Akın Aytop, referring to the fact that compulsive buying or shopping addiction usually emerges in late adolescence and early 20s, said, “However, some studies show that the age of onset can extend up to the 30s.”

Aytop stated that many studies have revealed that addiction can differ by gender, and said, “Research on behavioral addictions shows that women are more prone to social media, food, and shopping addictions. In contrast, men are stated to be more prone to gaming, sex, and gambling addictions. From a gender perspective, research in this area is still limited, and the effects of social roles assigned to women and men on shopping behavior have not been sufficiently examined.”

**Observing shopping behavior reveals factors triggering addiction! **

Aytop suggested that people observe themselves against shopping addiction, saying, “Dividing shopping into ‘before’, ‘during’, and ‘after’ stages, and recording the events, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors at each stage allows individuals to objectively observe their own behavior. This way, factors that trigger and sustain compulsive shopping, as well as the psychosocial and economic effects this behavior can lead to, can be noticed.”

**Psychotherapy enables individuals to regain control of their lives!**

Emine Akın Aytop emphasized that if shopping addiction is left untreated, just like other psychological disorders, it can negatively affect an individual's life in many ways, stating, “Over time, it can lead to physical, psychological, social, and financial problems. Therefore, seeking psychological and, if necessary, psychiatric support during this process is one of the most crucial steps towards recovery.”

Aytop stated that psychotherapy helps individuals recognize their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes related to shopping addiction and restructure these areas in a more functional way, concluding her words as follows:

“During this process, the individual develops healthier and more effective coping skills in the face of challenging life events; by recognizing their strengths, they increase their capacity to use them purposefully and consciously. This allows the individual to regain control of their life and develop a growth-oriented perspective.

Therefore, with psychotherapy, shopping addiction and the factors influencing this process are addressed holistically, laying the foundations for desired and lasting changes in the individual's life.”
