## Özet
Experts state that grief is not a feeling that only arises from the loss of a loved one; it can also be experienced after significant losses such as divorce, job loss, illness, migration, or the shattering of future dreams.
## İçerik
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel emphasized that grief does not progress in the same order and intensity for everyone, stating, 'Grief is not a linear process; a person may feel well on some days, while on others they may experience the loss with the same intensity as the first day.' Tunçel noted that emotions suppressed for a long time can manifest with different psychological and physical symptoms, stressing that healthy grief is not about forgetting the pain but learning to live with the loss.
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the healthy grieving process.
**The Goal is Not to Forget the Loss, But to Learn to Live With It!**
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel stated that sorrow is a natural and healthy psychological reaction we give when we lose someone we love or anything that holds meaning for us, adding, 'In fact, being able to grieve is an indicator of our capacity to form attachments.'
Tunçel explained that there is a model known as 'the five stages of grief' in society: denial, anger, bargaining, depressive affect, and acceptance. She added, 'However, current psychological literature shows that not everyone experiences these stages in the same order or with the same intensity. Grief is not a linear process; a person may feel well on some days, while on others they may experience the loss with the same intensity as the first day. In a healthy grieving process, the individual gradually begins to accept the reality of the loss, learn to live with the emotional pain it creates, and give new meaning to their life. The goal is not to forget the loss, but to learn to live with it.'
**Grief Has No Specific Expiration Date!**
Tunçel pointed out that grief does not have a specific expiration date, stating, 'Although the first few months are the most intense period for many, the effects of the loss can be felt with varying intensities for a year or even longer. This entirely depends on the individual's personality traits, the nature of the loss, their social support system, and life history.'
However, Tunçel noted that some symptoms might require professional evaluation, and continued as follows:
'The persistence of severe functional impairment to the extent that daily life cannot be sustained despite months passing, constant and unchanging intense longing, inability to accept the loss and feeling that life has completely stopped, the dominance of excessive self-blame or feelings of worthlessness, complete withdrawal from life, cessation of social relationships, hopelessness, thoughts that life is meaningless, or the emergence of suicidal thoughts, the prolonged continuation of severe sleep and appetite disturbances. These symptoms do not always mean depression; however, they must be evaluated by a mental health professional for prolonged grief disorder or clinical depression.'
**Suppressed Emotions Do Not Disappear; They Only Change Their Form of Expression!**
Tunçel noted that messages such as 'you must be strong,' 'don't cry,' and 'life goes on' are often given in society. She added, 'However, suppressed emotions do not disappear; they only change their form of expression.'
Tunçel emphasized that anxiety disorders, depression, anger outbursts, panic symptoms, or post-traumatic stress symptoms may be more common in individuals who suppress their emotions for a long time. She stated, 'In addition, physical symptoms such as sleep problems, muscle pains, headaches, gastrointestinal complaints, weakening of the immune system, and chronic fatigue may arise due to chronic stress. Healthy grief is not about constantly experiencing pain; it is about being able to express it when necessary, receive support, and reconnect with life over time.'
**Grief Can Also Arise With Changes in the Meaning of Life and Expectations!**
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel highlighted that sorrow is not merely an emotion experienced after death, stating, 'People can experience grief when they lose anything they value in their lives. A divorce, the loss of a job for which long effort was made, receiving a serious illness diagnosis, experiencing limb loss, loss of fertility, migration, economic losses, or the shattering of one's future dreams can also trigger similar grieving processes. This is because the core of grief is not only the loss of a person but the change in the meaning of life, sense of security, roles, or expectations for the future. Therefore, instead of statements like 'What is there to be so sad about?', it is necessary to consider the meaning of each individual's loss in their own life.'
**Medication is Not Directly Applied to Eliminate Grief!**
Tunçel stated that not every grieving process requires treatment, adding, 'Natural grief often progresses healthily with secure social support and psychological counseling when needed. However, if grief is prolonged, begins to seriously affect the person's life, or if additional mental health problems such as depression, trauma, or anxiety disorder have developed, professional support becomes crucial.'
**Clarifying the Approaches That Can Be Applied in Such Cases, Tunçel Concluded Her Words As Follows:**
'Grief-focused psychotherapy aims to help make sense of the loss, process intense feelings of longing, and support the individual in readapting to life. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps address guilt, hopelessness, and dysfunctional thought patterns. Trauma-focused therapies can be applied especially in cases of sudden, unexpected, or traumatic losses. Supportive psychotherapy and group therapies can create a safe space for sharing among individuals with similar experiences. Family therapy can support the communication and adaptation process, especially in losses affecting the family system.
Medication, on the other hand, is not directly applied to eliminate grief. If there are co-occurring psychiatric conditions such as clinical depression, severe anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or serious sleep problems, medical treatment deemed appropriate by a psychiatrist can be planned alongside psychotherapy.'
