This situation makes the stomach more vulnerable to harmful substances and infections.” Prof. Atamer pointed out that this situation, which facilitates the proliferation of bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori, can increase the risk of stomach cancer, and emphasized that the danger further increases when combined with smoking and alcohol consumption. Prof. Atamer also warned about the need to limit daily sodium consumption and to raise awareness against hidden salt. Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Aytaç Atamer made statements about the harms of excessive salt consumption to the stomach and its effect on increasing cancer risk, especially in combination with other risk factors. **Excessive salt consumption can prepare a suitable ground for cancer development! ** Prof. Aytaç Atamer, pointing out that excessive salt consumption, although not directly causing cancer, can increase the risk of stomach cancer by creating negative effects on stomach health, said, “High salt intake irritates and gradually weakens the mucosal layer that protects the stomach. This situation makes the stomach more vulnerable to harmful substances and infections.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/aytac-atamer-260402021440.jpg) Prof. Atamer stated that the constantly irritated stomach surface becomes sensitive as if abraded with sandpaper, and this can trigger inflammation processes, adding, “Scientific studies show that excessive salt consumption is associated with stomach cancer. It has been observed that stomach cancer rates are higher in societies where pickles, canned foods, and high-salt fermented foods are frequently consumed. One of the important reasons for this situation is that Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with stomach cancer, can multiply more easily in a high-salt environment. Salt can increase the damage this bacterium causes to the stomach wall, thereby preparing a suitable ground for cancer development.” **High salt consumption along with smoking and alcohol use can increase cancer risk! ** Prof. Aytaç Atamer emphasized that the combination of salt consumption with other risk factors also magnifies the danger, stating, “Smoking and alcohol consumption weaken the stomach lining, increasing the negative effects of salt, and when considered together, can further elevate cancer risk.” Prof. Atamer warned that it is of great importance to be careful about daily salt consumption, stating, “In general, it is recommended that daily sodium intake does not exceed 2,300 milligrams. However, for children, hypertension patients, and individuals with kidney disease, this amount should be even lower.” **Balanced salt consumption protects health! ** Prof. Aytaç Atamer underlined that 'hidden salt' is a significant problem in modern eating habits, stating, “Chips, instant soups, deli products, frozen meals, and even some types of bread can contain much more sodium than expected. For example, a serving of canned soup can contain more than 800 milligrams of sodium; this alone can account for a significant portion of the daily recommended amount.” Prof. Atamer, evaluating that reducing salt consumption does not mean sacrificing flavor, concluded his words as follows: “Richer and more balanced flavors can be achieved by using spices like garlic, red pepper, thyme, and citrus fruits like lemon in dishes. Additionally, checking the sodium content on product labels while shopping and preferring products labeled ‘low salt’ would be a healthy approach. Especially for individuals with heart disease, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, salt consumption is a more critical issue. Excessive salt intake can negatively affect the course of these diseases and increase the risk of complications. Therefore, balanced and controlled salt consumption is of great importance both for protecting stomach health and supporting overall health.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.88500](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.88500) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/excess-salt-can-increase-stomach-cancer-risk*
