## Özet

Experts say that dental floss is one of the essential oral and dental health care steps that should not be neglected.

## İçerik

Emphasizing that simply brushing teeth is not enough and that interdental spaces must also be cleaned, Periodontology Specialist Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler stated, “However, when not applied with the correct technique, it not only fails to provide the desired benefit but can also harm the gums.” Asst. Prof. Güler pointed out that harsh and sudden movements can cause trauma by directly pressing on the gums, and recommended using dental floss generally before going to bed in the evening and after brushing teeth.

Üsküdar University Dental Hospital Periodontology Specialist Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler made statements about the importance of using dental floss with the correct technique in oral and dental health, its method of use, and possible misconceptions.

**Dental floss should be an indispensable part of the daily oral care routine!**

Stating that one of the most important steps in protecting oral and dental health is not just brushing teeth, but also effectively cleaning interdental spaces, Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler said, “At this point, using dental floss is an indispensable part of the daily oral care routine. However, when not applied with the correct technique, it not only fails to provide the desired benefit but can also harm the gums.”

Noting that approximately 30-40 centimeters of floss should be cut when starting to use dental floss, Asst. Prof. Güler said, “A shorter piece of floss may slip during use and make control difficult because it cannot be wrapped sufficiently around the fingers. The cut dental floss is secured by wrapping it around the middle fingers of both hands. This way, the floss does not slip during use and can be moved more controllably. A more comfortable application is provided by using the thumbs for cleaning the upper teeth and the index fingers for the lower teeth.”

The purpose of dental floss is to provide surface cleaning by wrapping around the tooth!

Pointing out that the primary purpose of dental floss is not just to go in and out between teeth, Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler said:

“The main goal is to provide cleaning by contacting the tooth's surface and wrapping around the tooth. After the dental floss is gently placed between two teeth, it is passed through the contact point with a slight movement and advanced approximately 1 mm below the gum line. Then, the floss is wrapped around the tooth in a ‘C’ shape and pulled upwards. The same process is repeated for the adjacent tooth. Thus, both surfaces between the two teeth are effectively cleaned. All interdental spaces should be cleaned one by one with this method.”

**It is more appropriate to use dental floss before going to bed in the evening! **

Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler recommended using dental floss once a day, preferably before going to bed in the evening, and said, “The reason for this is the decrease in saliva secretion during sleep at night. With the reduction in the amount of saliva, food residues remaining in the mouth turn into bacterial plaque, which creates a basis for cavities and gum diseases. Therefore, it is of great importance to both brush teeth and clean interdental spaces before going to bed at night.”

Asst. Prof. Güler noted that the most correct approach to using dental floss is to first brush the teeth, and then perform interdental cleaning with dental floss, sharing the information, “While the toothbrush cleans the visible surfaces of the teeth, dental floss is effective in hard-to-reach interdental surfaces.”

**Dental floss used with the correct technique does not create gaps between teeth! **

Warning that dental floss can harm the gums when used with the wrong technique, Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler said, “Due to its thin and sharp structure, when used with aggressive movements, it can cause cuts in the gums. This therefore, one should not rush when passing dental floss between the teeth.”

Asst. Prof. Güler emphasized that the floss should be passed through the contact point slowly and controllably, stating, “Harsh and sudden movements can cause trauma by directly pressing on the gums. However, with correct use, the floss performs the cleaning process by wrapping around the tooth surface without harming the gums. The belief that dental floss creates gaps between teeth is also common. However, this is not true. Dental floss used with the correct technique does not create gaps between teeth. On the contrary, incorrect and harsh use can damage the gums and cause recession. This can, over time, create the impression of gaps forming between the teeth. Especially for people with tight contacts between their teeth, using dental floss can be difficult, but this situation does not necessitate discontinuing its use.”

**Incompatible restorations can make dental flossing difficult! **

Addressing the issue of whether dental floss damages fillings or crowns, Asst. Prof. Kübra Güler said, “Properly made fillings and crowns have a smooth surface compatible with the tooth. Such restorations are not affected by dental floss use.”

However, Asst. Prof. Güler stated that if there is an overhang in a filling or crown, dental floss can get caught in these areas, and concluded her words as follows:

“In such a situation, the problem is not with the dental floss but with the incompatibility of the treatment performed, and the relevant restoration needs to be renewed.

In conclusion, using dental floss with the correct technique is one of the most effective ways to maintain oral health. This simple habit, when included in the daily routine, plays a significant role in preventing tooth decay and gum diseases.”
