Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, expressing that this situation is observed more intensely in young people and individuals with high anxiety levels, said, ‘The fear of missing important developments or interactions can also trigger nomophobia in individuals with intensive social media use. This is an indicator that the phone has ceased to be merely a communication tool and has become part of the perception of identity and social status.’ Aydın emphasized that when the phone’s battery decreases, the brain perceives it as a threat and initiates a ‘fight or flight’ response, which can lead to physical symptoms such as palpitations and sweating. He also pointed out that in the long run, nomophobia can cause panic disorder, insomnia, social isolation, and significant decreases in quality of life.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın provided information about the psychological, physical, and social effects of the fear of being separated from one’s phone or its battery dying, known as nomophobia, and methods for coping with this anxiety.

**Nomophobia, a deep fear involving the feeling of being disconnected from the outside world!**

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that nomophobia is an abbreviation of the term ‘no mobile phone phobia’ and is used to describe a common type of anxiety that refers to the fear of being separated from one’s smartphone or its battery dying. He added, ‘This situation is defined as a deep fear that includes the feeling that a person’s connection with the outside world will be completely cut off, rather than just a simple concern.’

Aydın pointed out that younger generations, especially those at the center of the digital world, experience this situation more intensely because they conduct most of their social interactions via phone. He further stated, ‘Similarly, individuals with addictive tendencies and those with high general anxiety levels may also be more prone to charger anxiety due to the fear of losing control. The fear of missing important developments or interactions can also trigger nomophobia in individuals with intensive social media use. This is an indicator that the phone has ceased to be merely a communication tool and has become part of the perception of identity and social status.’

**When the phone’s battery decreases, the brain perceives it as a threat and initiates a ‘fight or flight’ response!**

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, stating that the body’s reactions when the phone’s battery decreases are closely related to the brain’s perception of a threat, continued as follows:

‘Scientifically, this situation causes the brain to secrete cortisol, the stress-coping hormone. When the phone’s charge drops to critical levels, an unconscious danger signal is received, and the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism is activated. This manifests itself with physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, accelerated pulse, sweating in the hands and palms, and even tremors. These symptoms are a natural consequence of the body preparing for a potential danger. Some research also shows that the stress created by nomophobia can lead to the phenomenon of a ‘phantom vibration’ or ‘phantom ringtone,’ where a person hears a phone vibration or sound that doesn't actually exist. This is proof of how deeply the brain reacts to the anxiety it creates.’

**It can lead to devastating effects on mental health in the long run!**

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, emphasizing that nomophobia is much more than a short-term concern, said, ‘It can lead to devastating effects on mental health in the long run.’

Aydın stated that the cycle of constantly checking phone battery and worrying about battery life will increase an individual’s chronic stress and anxiety levels. He explained, ‘This situation can evolve over time into more serious psychological problems such as panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. Furthermore, this intense connection with the phone leads to a decrease in real-world face-to-face interactions, bringing about social isolation and deterioration in relationships. The fear of the phone’s battery dying, even at night, can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to insomnia. When all these factors come together, an individual’s quality of life, work or school performance, and overall happiness level can be negatively affected.’

**Conscious technology use is essential to overcome nomophobia… **

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, addressing which habits individuals should change to reduce this anxiety, said, ‘Conscious technology use is at the forefront of these changes. Individuals can try a digital detox by putting their phone aside while eating or spending time with friends.’

Aydın, stating that another effective method is to turn off unnecessary notifications, concluded his words as follows:

n‘Constantly arriving notifications increase the phone’s attractiveness, making it harder to stay away from it. Furthermore, it is recommended to designate ‘limited zones’ at home or work where the phone should not be used; for example, not bringing the phone into the bedroom. Such practices help individuals realize that they can exist independently of their phone and that its battery dying is not a disaster. If these habits are not sufficient, seeking support from a specialist with methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be very beneficial in changing the underlying thought patterns of nomophobia.’
