## **"Epigenetics is formed by the effect of environmental factors on genes"**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, addressing the role of epigenetics in brain development, began his speech by saying: 'Unlike other living beings, human babies are born psychologically premature. For example, a duck can swim immediately after hatching, but humans are not like that. A human can only stand at the age of one, and begins to distinguish between good and bad at the age of 15. The human brain develops socially and emotionally by learning from its environment. If brain development is 30-40 percent genetic, it is shaped by 60-70 percent epigenetic effects. Epigenetics is formed by the effect of environmental factors on genes. When a piece of information or thought comes to our mind, and we add an emotion to it, it turns into a belief. If we repeat this belief, it then becomes a skill. If we continue to repeat it, it turns into personality and character within approximately six months. When character is formed, the brain begins to produce proteins in this direction. The cell makes it automatic, meaning we now perform this behavior automatically. Behavior is shaped and learned through conditioning. Our brain intensively undertakes these learnings during two periods in our lives. Just as all flowers bloom within a few weeks in spring, there is a serious synaptic explosion in the brain between the ages of 0-4 and 12-15. That is, all brain connections are rapidly formed. Then these connections are pruned, like a sculptor carving a statue. Family communication and environmental communication are very important during this pruning process.'

## **"A silent, lamb-like adolescent carries the risk of explosion in the future"**

Tarhan, describing the behaviors young people can exhibit during adolescence, said: 'Adolescence is a new phase, different from childhood. Until the age of 10, a child sees their parents as heroes; they are the only reference. After this age, socialization begins. Biologically, the child also opens up to the outside world. They don't want to oppose their parents, but a division begins in their inner world. This is also normal. In fact, in psychological literature, adolescence is defined as a normal schizophrenic period. That is, a contradictory, questioning behavior from an adolescent is an indicator of healthy development. If there is a silent, lamb-like adolescent, this is usually a sign of suppressed emotions and carries the risk of explosion in the future. The real danger is the child who does not express their problems. An adolescent who asks questions and objects is a natural part of development. During this period, parents worry as children ask questions. They say, 'Is he losing control?' or 'Why is he opposing us?' However, when criticized, the child either withdraws or develops reactive behaviors. During this period, it is no longer possible to guide the child towards the right path with methods such as pressure, intimidation, or suppression. We need to change our methods. Indeed, in our culture and belief system, communication through love, persuasion, and understanding is recommended. The approach should be based on love and trust, not coercion.'

## **"The conflicts experienced during this period have a meaning"**

Tarhan, pointing out that adolescents send messages to their parents, said: 'There are three types of communication between a child and parents. The first is healthy communication, the second is conflicted communication, and the third is lack of communication. The third is the most dangerous. If everyone in the house has retreated to their own corner, and there is no conversation or sharing, this is even worse than conflict. Humor can be present in healthy communication, which shows the relationship is strong. Indeed, identity confusion and chaos are natural during adolescence. The conflicts experienced during this period have a meaning; the child wants to send a message. They say, 'I am here.' The really important thing is for parents to develop a common language to understand this message. If there are favoritisms in the house, where the mother supports one child and the father supports another, there will be no peace in that home. It is necessary to manage conflicts and change problem-solving and stress-coping methods. It's like two people getting angry at the same time in a boat. If both row at the same time, the boat will capsize. One must remain calm. This applies to both marriage and relationships with children. At the root of the solution is a method we call radical acceptance. It is used in therapy, especially for traumas. Some parents struggle to communicate because they cannot accept their children's behavior. First, acceptance is necessary. When you accept the child as an individual, it becomes easier to manage them. Every situation has a solution, but these solutions begin with acceptance.'

## **"With Positive Psychology 2.0, the concepts of meaning and purpose gained even more importance"**

Tarhan stated that young people without purpose cannot chart their own paths: 'Positive psychology is a branch of science that examines how a person should live, how to build relationships, and how to think in order to stay healthy and not get sick. It teaches how to achieve authentic, or true, happiness. Classical psychology aims to solve problems by moving from negative to zero. Positive psychology, on the other hand, aims to move from zero to positive, meaning to increase individual well-being. In this sense, it is primary prevention; it intervenes before illness occurs. Today, especially guidance counselors and psychological counselors in schools show great interest in this field. Because it is important not only to correct negative behaviors but also to reinforce positive ones. There is a similar approach in medicine. Instead of invasive methods, strengthening the body's own system to cope with disease is now preferred. With Positive Psychology 2.0, the concepts of meaning and purpose have gained even more importance. Without meaning and purpose, a person is like a ship without direction. A ship whose destination is unknown will be tossed about in the smallest storm. Similarly, children who live only for the moment will be tossed about. Therefore, it is necessary to provide them with a lifestyle that offers goals and strategies. Children left without purpose remain under the influence of events and cannot chart their own paths.'

## **"Just saying 'live meaningfully' is not enough..."**

Tarhan stated that suicide and violence cases are rising with the increase in narcissism: 'After 2011, a global increase in narcissism is observed among young people. In places where narcissism increases, cases of suicide, violence, school truancy, and bringing weapons to school also rise. Statistics clearly show this increase. There is a widely used treatment model in some psychiatric clinics in California. It mentions four main characteristics of this situation. The first is hedonism, or pleasure-seeking. It says, 'If I like it, it's good; if I don't, it's bad.' The second is egocentrism. That is, focusing only on one's own desires. The third is isolation. Social bonds weaken, individuals become lonely. The fourth is dissociation and withdrawal. Psychological cases are hidden, children become withdrawn. All these effects are particularly intensely seen in adolescents. Therefore, imparting meaning and purpose to the individual during adolescence is of great importance. Just saying 'live meaningfully' is not enough; it is necessary to offer them goals and help them develop strategies. Psychiatric scales and research conducted for years also show that a large portion of young people question the purpose of their lives and fall short in this regard. The capitalist system's greed for more profit further widens this gap. What happens, happens to the children who become victims of this system...'

## **"An individual who develops themselves achieves both peace and happiness"**

Tarhan underlined that one must adopt a purpose that transcends oneself: 'Aristotle divided happiness into two types 2,500 years ago. The first is pleasure-oriented happiness, or hedonic happiness. Short-term joys originating from dopamine. The second is meaning happiness. Happiness that provides long-term inner peace, pursued through ideals and values. Hedonic happiness is associated with the brain's dopamine system. When a pleasant experience occurs, dopamine is released, and the person feels temporary happiness. Meaning happiness, on the other hand, arises from a person pursuing goals and ideals that give meaning to their life. It is the process of reaching the ego ideal. That is, when a person adopts a purpose that transcends themselves, they achieve true and long-term happiness. This approach also exists in our culture. For example, there is no exact equivalent for the concept of 'huzur' in Western languages. In English, for instance, the word 'peace' is used. However, 'huzur' is a word of Arabic origin and means 'to be ready'. True 'huzur' arises from a person being spiritually prepared for the future and mortality. An individual who develops themselves and finds meaning in life achieves both peace and happiness.'

## **"These problems need to be approached with the Firefighter model"**

Answering questions from the participants, Tarhan drew attention to the importance of correct intervention during moments of anger. Tarhan said: 'An adolescent's anger is an expected situation. Some express their anger directly, while others conceal it in a passively aggressive way. Through passive aggression, they express this emotion by breaking things or playing small games. Such situations can be frequently observed in adolescents. There is also a concept called 'adolescent normal'. This usually occurs more often in adolescents with social communication disorders. For example, when there is a condition like Asperger's syndrome, the adolescent may be academically very intelligent but may have low social and emotional intelligence. When everyone laughs at something, that person cannot laugh. There may be deficiencies in gross motor skills in teamwork. They may exhibit different behavior than normal when playing. Such situations can sometimes be perceived as abnormal by other adolescents. What is normal among other children can sometimes be challenging for an adolescent. Anger problems are a common situation in schools. These problems need to be approached with the Firefighter model. In firefighting, the fire is first extinguished, and then the cause is investigated. In a moment of anger, immediately investigating the reasons is like adding fuel to the fire. It leads to an increase in anger. Instead, it is necessary to allow the anger to be experienced and calmly examine why it started, which rule was broken, and which principles were violated. When you respond with anger, it's not the thinking brain but the feeling brain of the person opposite you that becomes active. In this situation, when responding to an angry person, you are affected by their emotional power. A strong person can come to dominate a weaker one, which does not create healthy communication.' He concluded his words.
