## Özet

Experts state that virtual reality (VR) therapy has become an important tool used in psychotherapy, allowing clients to confront their fears in a safe environment.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat stated that VR therapy is not a therapy school in itself, but rather a supportive method that enhances the effectiveness of evidence-based approaches, saying, "Especially in anxiety disorders and phobias, it allows the client to confront situations they avoid in real life, within a safe environment." Karpat stated that in VR therapy, fear is not narrated but experienced in a controlled manner, emphasizing that this reduces avoidance behaviors.

Karpat noted that when properly structured, noticeable progress can be achieved in a short time, and in the long term, VR therapy not only alleviates fears but also strengthens the individual's self-confidence.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat provided information on how VR therapy strengthens traditional approaches in psychotherapy for coping with anxiety and phobias, and how it is used as a safe and controlled tool.

**VR therapy is not a school of therapy; it's a tool that strengthens evidence-based approaches!**

Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat stated that psychotherapy is always a door opening to the client's inner world, adding, "However, some doors cannot be opened merely by talking."

Emphasizing that virtual reality (VR) therapy emerges at this very point as one of the prominent tools of modern psychotherapy, Karpat said, "VR therapy is not a school of therapy; it is a tool that enhances the effectiveness of existing, evidence-based approaches. Especially in anxiety disorders and phobias, it allows the client to confront situations they avoid in real life within a safe environment. Experiences that cannot be created in a session room are integrated into the therapeutic process in a controlled and structured manner through VR. Thus, VR serves as a powerful bridge preparing the client for real life."

**In VR therapy, fear is not narrated, it is experienced! **

Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat, touching upon the key features distinguishing VR therapy from traditional therapies, explained, "In traditional therapies, the client either describes or imagines the situations they fear. In VR therapy, this situation is 'experienced.' Virtual reality allows the client to visually and auditorily immerse themselves in the experience. The therapist can instantly control the intensity, duration, and content of the environment. This makes the therapeutic process more measurable, repeatable, and safe. One of the most important differences is the reduction of avoidance behavior; because the client first experiences situations they are not ready to confront in real life within a virtual environment. This both accelerates and deepens the therapy process."

**VR therapy provides the experience of coping with fear step by step! **

Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat stated that VR therapy is also applied in specific phobias such as dental fear, saying, "Dental fear is often not just about the fear of pain. Loss of control, helplessness, and past negative experiences form the basis of this fear."

**Karpat noted that in VR therapy, this fear is addressed gradually, stating the following:**

"The client first finds themselves in a waiting room, then sits in the dentist's chair, hears the sounds of instruments, and finally approaches the intervention. Scenarios are specially prepared according to the client's fear level and past experiences. The goal is not to plunge the client into fear all at once, but to allow them to experience coping with fear step by step.

nOne of the most striking aspects of VR therapy is that its effects can be observed in a relatively short time. In cases of mild to moderate dental phobias, a significant decrease in anxiety levels is seen within a few sessions. In cases with deeper, traumatic histories, the process may take a bit longer. However, most clients begin to consider it possible to go to a real dental appointment for the first time after VR therapy. This is an extremely critical threshold for therapy."

**When properly structured, VR therapy transforms a person's self-confidence!**

Clinical Psychologist Can Karpat, pointing out that like any powerful tool, VR therapy must be used carefully, said, "One of the biggest risks is exposing the client to a level they are not yet ready for. Also, some clients may perceive VR as a game or show resistance to technology."

Karpat also stated that physical side effects such as dizziness or nausea can occasionally be observed, concluding his remarks as follows:

"Therefore, VR therapy requires clinical experience and ethical sensitivity; it should not be presented as a standalone solution.

The most valuable gain from VR therapy is the client's internalization of the feeling 'I can cope.' After sessions, avoidance behaviors decrease, and physical anxiety responses diminish. In the long term, these gains are not limited to dental fear. The client also becomes more resilient in the face of other medical procedures and stressful situations. When properly structured, VR therapy transforms not just a fear, but also a person's self-confidence."
