Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz provided information about the symptoms, causes, effects of toxic relationships on individuals, and ways to protect oneself from and exit these relationships. **All relationships can be toxic!** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that while the word 'toxic' may not have a direct equivalent in Turkish, it semantically evokes situations that are harmful, poisonous, and should be avoided. He added, “It carries a similar meaning in the context of relationships. It is used for types of relationships that create hopelessness, damage self-confidence, and cause stress. Toxic relationships can appear in romantic relationships, friendships, work relationships, or general social relationships.” **These symptoms are proof of a toxic relationship!** Beyaz stated that there are several clear ways to understand the presence of a toxic environment in a relationship: “The individual constantly feels exhausted, helpless, and used in the relationship. They feel their needs are ignored and that they are consistently secondary. They notice inconsistencies in the other person's mood and become stressed by this situation. Decisions made or actions taken result in intense emotions such as guilt, fear, and anger. They are excessively careful about their behavior and anxious about the other person’s reactions to avoid upsetting them. In addition to these, verbal and psychological violence, manipulative behaviors, demeaning or controlling attitudes, punitive behaviors, and emotional abuse are also direct signs of a toxic relationship. Lying can also be a common sign in such relationships, but it does not solely prove the existence of a toxic relationship; it should be evaluated along with other symptoms.” **Fear of being alone can lead to perpetuating a toxic relationship!** nSpecialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz pointed out that toxic relationships are often maintained due to the fear of loneliness, stating, “When an individual ends a relationship, they may experience anxiety about not finding someone else or being alone.” Beyaz noted that thoughts such as ‘No one else will love me the same way’ or ‘I've lost my former attractiveness’ are beliefs that make separation difficult. He added, “Furthermore, the effort, time, and love invested throughout the relationship strengthen the tendency to maintain it. Habits and routines also lead to avoiding change. Pleasant times spent together and the feeling of insecurity created by being alone at home make staying in the relationship appealing.” Recognizing a toxic relationship is the first step to protection! Emphasizing that recognizing a toxic relationship is the first step to protection, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz said, “An individual can observe the symptoms and notice the changes in their own state before and after the relationship.” Offering suggestions for creating awareness, Beyaz stated, “Noting down thoughts and feelings creates awareness. Setting boundaries with the other person and being disciplined and consistent is important. It is necessary to accept that toxic behaviors often stem from the other person's own issues. Communication and awareness can sometimes reduce toxic behaviors; however, this process requires a lot of time and effort.” **If an individual recognizes the effects and stops denying them, it is possible to manage the process!** Specialist Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz pointed out that in most cases, toxic relationships result in divorce or passive-aggressive communication, stating, “However, if an individual recognizes the effects on themselves and stops denying them, it may be possible to manage the process.” Underlining that to escape a toxic relationship, one must stop denying and realistically accept the situation, Beyaz concluded his remarks as follows: “It is important for the individual not to neglect activities and habits that are good for them. Seeking expert support accelerates emotional healing and makes the process healthier. Even if the relationship ends, its effects may be felt for some time. During this period, being patient, showing self-compassion, and trusting one's intuition are critically important. Decisions are crucial for the individual to confront themselves; therefore, they should be made rationally and with awareness.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.64829](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.64829) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/feeling-exhausted-helpless-and-used-is-a-sign-of-a-toxic-relationship*
