## Özet

**Stress, which has become inevitable while trying to keep up with life's intense and heavy pace, has become one of the biggest problems of the modern age. The diseases and dangers caused by stress are quite high... Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan shed light on the neurological effects of stress and the unknowns of the subject. Stress is among the common anxiety problems experienced by people of all ages. Excessive stress, which is closely linked to many diseases, is also called ''toxic stress''. This excessive anxiety, also known as ''poisonous stress'', negatively affects the entirety of human life. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made striking statements about neurological disorders caused by stress and its proper management.**

Stress is among the negative emotional experiences that encompass all kinds of internal and external factors causing a disruption in the balance of our daily lives. The stress hormone causes excessive secretion of cortisol, known as hypercortisolism. Excessive cortisol secretion primarily affects the brain. All connections in the brain related to the issue caused by stress push it to overwork.

This overly stressful functioning triggers certain hormones. These hormones, affected by stress such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, oxytocin, and growth hormone, lead to toxic stress. As a result of toxic stress, very serious health problems such as cancer, stroke, and heart attack can emerge. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan makes important statements about coping methods while addressing these problems caused by stress. ## ** ''Five Horsemen of Darkness'' **

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who defines excessive stress as toxic stress, emphasizes that this poisonous stress secretes acid-like chemicals in the brain. Tarhan states that toxic stress triggers emotions such as resentment, anger, hatred, jealousy, and hostility, calling these feelings the ''five horsemen of darkness''. He also points out that under toxic stress, the body enters a ''fight or flight'' state, and in a fight situation, the living organism does not invest, but rather directs all its resources towards defense.

***“This is something we frequently encounter. If there is stress, an individual rapidly begins to decline with Alzheimer's disease and dementia-related illnesses. In such situations, rapid deterioration begins. Another example for neurological diseases is that Parkinson's disease is also triggered. Dementia is triggered. Many things affecting the immune system have a cause-and-effect relationship with stress. ”***

## **Acute Stress Causes Cancer**

Since the body focuses on defense, it relegates external dangers to the background. For this reason, the body's immune system is temporarily blocked and slows down. Atypical cells, which are encircled and held harmlessly by white blood cells, begin to transform into cancer cells and proliferate when the immune system weakens and white blood cells decrease. Acute stress, which causes adversities such as gastrointestinal diseases, bone marrow deterioration, and the withdrawal of growth hormone, is closely related to physical ailments.

## **Stress Can Be The Last Straw!**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who suggests that stress has a triggering effect on all neurological diseases, emphasized that in a problem related to brain and heart vessels, stress could be the last straw. He reiterated that it creates a kind of breaking effect at the point where the body's impaired function is weakest.

## **These Individuals Have Five Times Higher Risk of Sudden Heart Attack**

Tarhan, stating that stress sensitivity is closely related to genetic makeup, notes that those with hyperactivity are generally more prone to stress. The neuropsychiatrist emphasizes that this stress disorder emerges in individuals with hyperactivity and lists their characteristics;

•    Hasty

•    Impatient

•    Restless

•    Unable to sit still

•    Always on alert

• Always sitting on the edge of the seat

•    Overactive sympathetic nervous system

•    Unable to relax

•    Unable to find comfort

At the same time, in individuals with stress disorder and hyperactivity, heart diseases and gastrointestinal problems increase threefold, while the risk of sudden heart attack rises fivefold. Individuals with sympathetic activation, however, cannot relax or calm themselves. However, if a person wishes, they can activate their parasympathetic nervous system and mitigate this characteristic.

## **First 6 Hours Are Crucial For Intervention!**

Expert Neuropsychiatrist Nevzat Tarhan, who suggests that stress-related dementia can be reversed with anti-stress treatment, emphasized that the first 6 hours are crucial for intervention in stress-related brain paralysis, asserting that the condition could cease to be chronic with applied physical therapy.

## **'Zero Stress Would Be Nice But Not Possible'**

It's not about avoiding stress, but about managing it. As one avoids stress, secondary and tertiary stresses emerge, and anticipatory anxiety develops. Anticipatory anxiety creates expectation-related anxiety about stress. For this reason, when a person avoids stress, thinking 'I must stay away from stress,' if any part of their body goes numb, they immediately panic. If they hear bad news, they are affected very quickly. Because zero stress in this life would be nice, but it's not possible, nor is it realistic. The terms 'defeating stress' or 'staying away from stress' are not psychiatric terminology.

## **Stress Is Like Nuclear Energy; If Managed Correctly, It Illuminates a City**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, suggesting that toxic stress is uncontrollable stress, emphasizes the need to learn how to control stress and continues as follows;
 ''Stress is like nuclear energy. What is nuclear energy? There is pressure, there is a dimension of danger, but if you manage it well, what does it do? It illuminates a city. If stress is managed well in a person, it gives that person energy, motivation, enables self-mobilization, and creates a stimulating effect. Therefore, controlled stress is beneficial.''

## **Avoidant Approach And Fear Increase Stress**

We need to change the stereotypes in our minds regarding stress. Stress has a dimension of danger and threat for us, but also a dimension of opportunity. We need to focus on how to manage stress. An avoidant approach and fear related to stress increase stress. We need to perceive stress like wind. It's not the wind that flies the kite, but the kite's position against the wind. An individual's position against stress keeps them standing and leads to success. However, in situations with excessive wind, one must also know how to avoid it. What is important is to take the right position against the wind.

## **There Are 3 Models In Stress Management**

Tarhan, explaining stress coping methods, talks about three models and lists their characteristics;
 Sponge-type individuals absorb, absorb, absorb stress and then collapse. They are always avoidant and lack motivation. They are always focused on the negative. These are sponge-type stress management, and because they cannot manage stress, they miss many opportunities in life.
 The types called Teflon-type. You know the characteristic of a Teflon pan… It doesn't burn itself but burns what it touches. These types are similar… These individuals don't get stressed themselves, but they stress everyone around them, including their immediate family. They are selfish, opportunistic, cannot empathize, and interpret events from their own perspective.
 Teflon-type individuals are narcissistic. Due to their Teflon characteristics, if these individuals are powerful and everyone needs them, people temporarily tolerate them. But when power leaves their hands, they remain utterly alone. Teflon types are individuals who become unhappy after a certain period. We can call them individuals who approach stress selfishly. They are individuals whose sacred value is their own interest.
 Those with rubber-type stress management are flexible and elastic against stress; after absorbing stress, they return to their original state. Here, they manage stress. The rubber type has stress management. Stress cannot harm these individuals, but they can somehow use stress for their own purpose.

 In stress management, this is called ''psychological resilience''. It is also referred to as psychological robustness. Psychological robustness is not material toughness or rigidity, but resilience. Psychological rigidity and psychological resilience are not the same thing. Psychological rigidity is stubbornness; it doesn't bend, it breaks. A Teflon pan, for example, does not bend and breaks. The rubber type bends, absorbs, and returns to its original state. The Turkish equivalent of the word resilience is flexibility. It is necessary to learn elastic-type psychological resilience. A person who cannot learn psychological resilience cannot manage stress.
