## Özet

**President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Foundation Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, delivered the opening lecture for the Yalova University 2026-2027 Academic Year. He met with academic, administrative staff and students under the title 'Remaining Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: From Science to Wisdom'. Tarhan stated that in an era where artificial intelligence encompasses every aspect of life, knowledge alone is not sufficient, noting that wisdom is not merely knowing a lot, but also accepting uncertainty and producing virtuous solutions, drawing attention to conscientious responsibilities. Tarhan added that the greatest shield against the risk of artificial intelligence is to achieve wisdom through a strategic transformation. **

## **How did artificial intelligence emerge?**

In the first lecture of the year, which saw significant participation, President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Foundation Prof. Nevzat Tarhan addressed the emergence process of artificial intelligence and drew attention to the works of important figures in this field in the literature. Tarhan said; “Artificial intelligence first started in 2023, but the person called the 'godfather of artificial intelligence' at its inception is Jeffrey Hinton. On the other side, there is Hopfield. Jeffrey Hinton is a cognitive psychologist, a sub-branch of psychology that views the brain as a computer, a sub-branch related to neuropsychology. He sees the brain as a computer and works on artificial neural networks. While working on artificial neural networks, he was always criticized for them. They said he was receiving the Nobel Prize for his persistence in a minority opinion. He is trying to find the computational model of artificial neural networks in the brain. While studying 'How does the brain compute? How does it calculate probabilities? How does the brain make decisions?', he worked on artificial neural networks and started from the project idea of 'fuzzy logic,' known as fuzzy logic, whose first article was actually written by an Azerbaijani Turk in the 1960s. It starts with him. He then finds this computational model. He describes the form of computation and mathematical modeling as 'deep learning', and thus the button for artificial intelligence is pushed. It began to develop significantly faster than expected,” he stated.

## **“If we can self-evaluate, we can escape the risk of artificial intelligence”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the path humanity should follow in the face of artificial intelligence; “Regarding artificial intelligence, we need to separate these three things: 'what we will do it for, how we will decide, and what we will do and why...'. Human-like behavior, artificial intelligence does this. Mental competence, it does this. Jeffrey Hinton even says, 'If it continues like this, humanity will be like a 5-year-old child in the face of artificial intelligence in 20 years'. He says humanity will be like a 5-year-old child due to the vast amount of information, as a future concern. The suggestion here is to use this technology as a self-verification tool and transform it into a self-evaluation assistant. If we can self-evaluate, we can escape the risk of artificial intelligence,' he stated.

## **Why is adding meaning important?**

Tarhan, stating that the frontal lobe of the human brain is an important structure that makes humans human and enables the formation of civilization; “Without the frontal lobe of the human brain, there could be no humanity, morality, or civilization. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for serotonin, for being human, and for us creating civilization. For example, if you took a monkey and it lived among humans for a thousand years, it wouldn't learn meaning. It wouldn't learn to live a life or build a civilization. It only learns what's in its genetic potential: eating, drinking, reproducing, sheltering. So, it means humans have other genes. There are metabolic genes. These genes are all the supra-mental genes that fulfill humanity's search for meaning, search for freedom, need to overcome loneliness, need to clarify death, and need related to perceiving the past and future. Some of them have been found. For example, the novelty-seeking gene has been found. The novelty-seeking gene is found in interactive individuals. They say these genes should be present now. Because animals don't have these algorithms. Why is adding meaning important? If you add meaning to sufferings, you will manage sufferings. If you add meaning to fears, you will manage fears. If you add the right meaning, life becomes livable. If you add the wrong meaning, life becomes cruel and unbearable,” he stated.

## **“The level of happiness is constantly declining”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the question of whether economic development and technological progress make people happier, spoke as follows, citing statistics from the USA:

“When we look at the statistics in the USA between 1950 and 2000, it is seen that the per capita gross national product increased from $20,000 in 1950 to $35,000 in 2000, and has now reached over $70,000. However, the level of happiness is constantly declining. On this, they write, 'Money cannot buy happiness.' We also have a saying, 'Happiness cannot be bought with money'. Technology has advanced. People are flying, going to space. Artificial intelligence has emerged, but happiness is going down. In the USA, statistics revealing the situation of children and young people were published in 2002. Three young people under 25 die due to AIDS, 25 young people are infected with HIV, and six children commit suicide. 340 children under 18 are arrested due to AIDS. 170 babies are born to adolescent mothers, 2,833 children drop out of school. 4,000 children are arrested in one day. Last year, this situation was experienced in Australia. Previously, it always happened in America, America, Canada.”

## **Transition towards a quantum-centered understanding…**

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of the transition from materialistic science to post-materialistic science, linked the significance of this transformation for humanity's future to historical scientific changes. Tarhan said; “The transition from materialistic science to post-materialistic science is vital for humanity's awakening. It is even more important than the transition from an Earth-centered understanding to a Sun-centered understanding. Previously, the Earth was thought to be the center of the universe. After Galileo, this understanding changed, and a Sun-centered system was adopted. Now, we are talking about a transition from viewing the Earth as part of a Sun-centered system to a quantum-centered understanding,” he said.

## **“Rational inferences are paths leading to truth”**

Tarhan stated that quantum physics questions traditional assumptions about matter and that there are different ways to reach scientific knowledge. Tarhan said; “In what we call quantum, the very existence of matter is questioned. Has anyone seen an electron, the smallest particle of matter? No. But we see these with the mind's eye. We believe they must exist. There are ways that, although not directly observed scientifically, are detected through experiments and lead to truth. These include experiment and observation, secondly reasoning methods, and thirdly rational intuitions. For example, what Newton and Archimedes discovered are rational inferences we see. Rational inferences are paths leading to truth. Thus, in post-materialistic science, materialism is now being questioned, and post-materialism is being re-examined. Superdeterminism is also one of the important topics of these discussions today,” he stated.

## **“Humans are happy when they work for others”**

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of self-transcendence and helping others in human happiness; “At the top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is self-actualization, but in his last book published in 2017, he says, 'It's not self-actualization, but self-transcendence'. That is, human self-transcendence. Helping others, having a spiritual mission, spiritual needs, psychological needs, and transcendent needs… Humans are happy when they work for others. There are also studies on this. For example, there's a Harvard study. They give people money in the morning. To one group, they say, 'Spend it however you wish'. They check happiness hormones in the morning. To another group, they say, 'By evening, spend this money not just for yourselves, but for others'. When they took measurements again in the evening, it was observed that more happiness hormones were secreted in the brains of those who spent money for others. In our culture, too, there's a saying, 'It's not the receiver, but the giver who wins.' Indeed, when people give, they feel the inner peace of giving,” he stated.

## **“Interaction occurs between brains”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the importance of mirror neurons in emotional interaction between people, explained the effects of trust in the brain. Tarhan said; “There are mirror neurons in the brain. These are called 'mirror neurons'. Thanks to mirror neurons, the other person's brain and our brain communicate in a sense. There are motor mirror neurons. For example, when we lift our hand, the regions related to the same movement in the other person's brain are activated. Emotional mirror neurons also work this way. If you give trust to the other person, oxytocin hormone is secreted in their brain. Oxytocin is most secreted in breastfeeding mothers. Think of the bond a mother forms with her child; there's immense affection between them, and oxytocin is secreted during this process. When a relationship of trust is established, this hormone can also be secreted in the other person. If there's no trust relationship, then stress hormones are secreted. So, an interaction occurs between brains via both stress and mirror neurons,” he stated.

## **“If humans do not respect the rights of others, they can behave like a primitive being”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the importance of being able to manage emotions; “Being able to manage emotions is important. The brain is such a high-level system. We can see the difference that separates humans from other living beings here. In the limbic system, there are areas called the cingulate gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex, and emotion regulation region. At the bottom is the amygdala. The amygdala, in our culture, is like the equivalent of the 'nafs' (ego/self). It is an insatiable structure, always wanting more, without limits. When acting with an understanding that only considers its own interests and disregards the rights of others, the amygdala can become aggressive. If a human does not respect the rights of others, they can behave like a primitive being,” he said.

## **The brain's decision-making process**

Tarhan continued to explain the role of different brain regions in decision-making and regulating behavior; “The hippocampus is the region related to memory. Various brain regions also play a role in the brain's processes related to eating, drinking, sleeping, and daily needs. The orbitofrontal cortex, located in the lower part of our brain, is a decision-making region that performs a kind of evaluation between reason and emotions. It is effective in our decision-making regarding whether something is appropriate, valid, or beneficial. From this perspective, the amygdala plays an important role in processes related to emotional responses, while the higher-level limbic system is involved in emotion regulation,” he stated.

## **“California syndrome turned into a global civilization crisis”**

Tarhan also drew attention to the effects of modern lifestyle on loneliness and individualism, evaluating this situation as a global civilization crisis. Tarhan, addressing the spread of hedonism and narcissism; “This situation actually started as the California syndrome but evolved into a global civilization crisis. Hedonism, meaning a humanity choosing to pursue pleasure as an ideal, began to emerge. Egocentrism and narcissism, meaning a person thinking only of themselves and prioritizing their own interests, are creating the modern human type. As a result, single-person living began. This situation has actually started in our country as well. Household structures are becoming fragile, and five-person households are decreasing. The rate of living in single-person homes is also increasing in Turkey,” he said.

## **“Transition from artificial intelligence to artificial wisdom”**

Tarhan, emphasizing that wisdom cannot be explained solely by possessing knowledge; “Wisdom is not positioned against knowledge, nor is it merely the ability to speak. Psychological research examines the relationship between knowledge and reasoning. Features such as recognizing the limits of one's own knowledge, considering different perspectives, accepting uncertainty, and seeking constructive solutions are parts of wisdom. In other words, wisdom is not considered merely knowing a lot. The transition from artificial intelligence to artificial wisdom can also emerge as a strategic transformation,” he stated.
