## Özet

Experts state that heart attacks are not only seen in old age but also pose a serious threat to young people.

## İçerik

Pointing out that especially smoking increases the risk of heart attack in young people, Cardiology Specialist Prof. Mehmet Baltalı said, “Smoking is the most important cause; it increases the risk of heart attack by 3-4 times. Second is high bad cholesterol. The third causes are hypertension, diabetes, and genetics.” Emphasizing that which vessel is blocked in a heart attack is decisive in the course of the disease, Prof. Baltalı pointed out the importance of rapid intervention against the risk of sudden death. Prof. Baltalı, drawing attention to the fact that the first thing to do is to call 112, warned that intervention by non-experts could cause serious harm.

Cardiology Specialist Prof. Mehmet Baltalı from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the symptoms of a heart attack, increasing risk factors in young people, the danger of sudden death, and how to perform the correct first aid during a crisis.

**Heart attacks are more common in men and the elderly! **

Cardiology Specialist Prof. Mehmet Baltalı, pointing out that a heart attack occurs with the sudden blockage of the vessels feeding the heart, said, “Myocardial infarction means a heart attack. Under normal conditions, three main vessels feed the heart. When any of them is blocked, oxygen does not go to that region of the heart fed by that vessel. Suddenly, that area stops contracting entirely, and this can lead to serious problems.”

Emphasizing that heart attacks are a more common condition in men and the elderly, Prof. Baltalı stated, “The reason for this is the clot blocking the vessel. In women, it increases with the onset of menopause. This is more commonly known as a disease of old age.”

**Smoking causes an increase in heart attack rates among young people!**

Reminding that the rate of heart attacks has recently increased in young people, meaning women and men under 45, Prof. Baltalı warned, “The increased awareness of heart attacks has also increased the rates. In past deaths, it was not clear whether it was a heart attack. There are risk factors causing heart attacks. Genetic, familial, polygenic factors exist, such as smoking and cholesterol. Especially because the smoking rate has increased, heart attack rates can be seen higher in young people.”
n

**The risk of being fatal depends on which vessel is blocked!**

Prof. Baltalı, stating that a heart attack can manifest with various symptoms, reminded, “Firstly, it may not show any symptoms. The second and most common symptom is chest pain or left arm pain.”

Emphasizing that the risk of fatality increases depending on which vessel is blocked and which area's blood supply is prevented during a heart attack, Prof. Baltalı said, “Especially due to the blockage of the right coronary artery, abdominal pain and nausea can occur. A serious rhythm conduction defect can form. This arrhythmia becomes fatal.”

**Lifestyle and genetics increase the risk!**

Underlining that a heart attack is dangerous at any age, Prof. Baltalı said, “With the blockage of one of the large vessels, if blood does not go to a certain region of the heart and it remains oxygen-deprived, it can be dangerous to that extent depending on that region. But this situation does not have much to do with age. However, we can say that heart attacks in young people cause sudden cardiac death much more frequently.”
n

Prof. Baltalı, stating that heart attack risk factors are similar to normal coronary artery disease risk factors, said:

“Smoking is the most important cause; it increases the risk of heart attack by 3-4 times. Second is high bad cholesterol. The third causes are hypertension, diabetes, and genetics. By genetics, we don't mean something directly inherited from parents, but if a parent has had a heart attack under the age of 60, these individuals are at much higher risk. Therefore, these people need to have these risk factors checked much earlier and avoid them.

As a precaution, it is necessary to eliminate such risks, quit smoking, use cholesterol medication, and eat a healthy diet rich in olive oil, vegetables, and fruits. Daily time should be allocated for exercises like walking or swimming at certain rates.”
n

**The most important step of first aid is to call 112! **

Prof. Mehmet Baltalı, emphasizing that initial intervention for a person having a heart attack is vital, said, “The first thing to do is to rest. The most important thing is to call the 112 emergency ambulance and summon the ambulance.” Prof. Baltalı stressed that intervention for someone having a heart attack should not be done by just anyone, stating, “Intervention should be performed by experts in the field. A person having a heart attack should be laid on their back and not moved. The arrival of the ambulance should be awaited.”
n

**Intervention by non-experts can do more harm than good! **

Prof. Baltalı, stating that the person should be intervened with as quickly as possible, warned, “Sudden death, meaning the heart stopping, are deaths that occur 1-2 hours after a heart attack. The person must be intervened with as quickly as possible. This intervention must be performed by experts in the field. The first thing to pay attention to is checking whether the person is breathing and if their heart is beating. Keeping the mouth open as much as possible and removing mechanical obstructions to breathing is sufficient. Any intervention not performed by experts brings more harm than good.”

**Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can stop a beating heart! **

Underlining that cardiopulmonary resuscitation should never be performed by an untrained person, Prof. Baltalı said, “Incorrect cardiopulmonary resuscitation can cause the heart to stop while it is beating. The 112 ambulance should be called, and its arrival awaited. The heart sounds of a person whose heart is beating may not be heard. Intervention by an untrained person for someone having a heart attack cannot result in a healthy outcome. Doctors, emergency medical technicians, and nurses can perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is necessary to determine if the heart attack patient is breathing and to check if there is a pulse.”
n

Prof. Baltalı concluded by saying that a person having a heart attack, if alone and driving, must pull their vehicle to the side, “The person should call the 112 emergency service. They should get into a lying position. If they are in great distress, they can ask for help. The person providing help must also be an expert in the field.”
