## Özet

Experts say that the first dental examination in children should be done as soon as the first tooth emerges.

## İçerik

Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan from Pediatric Dentistry stated that this examination, conducted by the age of one at the latest, forms the basis of a preventive approach in oral and dental health, and said, “The first examination is not only about checking teeth; it also aims to establish communication with the child.” Asst. Prof. Tamtekin Erdoğan, who also mentioned that a personalized follow-up plan can be created by identifying risks before cavities form, emphasized that early examination is critical for a healthy oral structure.

Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan from Üsküdar University Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry provided information about when the first dental examination should be performed in children and its importance in protecting oral and dental health.

**First dental examination should be done with the first tooth!**

Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan stated that dental health in children often comes into focus with the eruption of the first teeth, and said, “However, many parents may question whether an examination is necessary when teeth have just emerged. Yet, according to the joint opinion of the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Turkish Society of Pedodontics, the first dental examination should be performed as soon as the child's first tooth erupts. It is recommended that this initial examination be completed by the age of one at the latest.”

Reminding that the primary goal of the first dental examination is to initiate preventive approaches to protect the child's oral and dental health before any problems arise, Asst. Prof. Tamtekin Erdoğan said, “The information and guidance provided during this early period significantly contribute to the formation of a healthy oral structure in later years.”

**The first examination aims not only for dental check-up but also for communication with the child! **

Noting that the first examination is not only about checking teeth, Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan said, “It also aims to establish communication with the child. During this process, parents are asked for information about the child's general health status, eating habits, and oral care routine.”

Pointing out that situations such as night feeding, sleeping at the breast, or bottle use are particularly evaluated, Asst. Prof. Tamtekin Erdoğan continued as follows:

“Recommendations are provided to parents for cleaning milk residues accumulated on tooth surfaces due to these habits. Wiping the teeth with a damp cloth is generally advised. Furthermore, the regulation of using complementary foods with high sugar content is strongly emphasized. Information is given about choosing age-appropriate toothbrushes and toothpastes for the child. Topics such as the use of fluoride or non-fluoride products and brushing frequency are also addressed in this initial assessment. For infants, finger toothbrushes may be recommended to facilitate oral cleaning.”

**The aim is to prevent cavities before they form! **

Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan also stated that any habits the child might have are evaluated during the first dental examination, saying, “The effects of these habits on dental and oral health are determined, and necessary guidance is provided to the family. In addition, the child's cavity risk status is determined, and a follow-up plan is created accordingly.”

Asst. Prof. Tamtekin Erdoğan stated that while an annual check-up is considered sufficient for children with no cavity risk, control sessions can be planned every 3 or 6 months depending on the risk status, and explained, “The main purpose of this approach is to prevent cavities before they form and to guide children towards a healthy process through regular dental check-ups. At the same time, these early visits allow children to get used to the dentist's environment and receive treatment without developing fear in later periods. Parents often tend to take their children to the dentist only when there is pain or a problem. However, this situation can make treatments more complex and difficult. Whereas, the first visit made before the child's first teeth have decayed, without experiencing pain or infection, enables both the child and the family to manage the process more healthily.”

**Fun materials help children adapt to the process more easily! **

Emphasizing that many dental clinics today create special areas for children, Asst. Prof. Elif Ayşe Tamtekin Erdoğan said, “Thanks to this, children can go through the examination process more comfortably and enjoyably.”

Asst. Prof. Tamtekin Erdoğan emphasized that educational videos and storybooks can also be useful tools in the process of parents introducing their children to the dentist, and concluded her words as follows:

“These materials help children become familiar with the dental clinic environment in advance and adapt to the process more easily.”
